ABELCENTRE NIELS HENRIK ABEL CENTRE FOR MATHEMATICS AND NATURAL SCIENCES NIELS HENRIK ABEL THE GREATEST NORDIC MATHEMATICIAN Niels Henrik Abel (1802 - 1829) is the most important Norwegian and Nordic mathematician, and ranges amongst the major mathematicians in the world. For Norwegians, Niels Henrik Abel's place in mathematics is comparable to that of Henrik Ibsen's in literature, Edvard Grieg's in music and Edvard Munch's in fine arts. His lifework was created during a decade in the beginning of the 19th century. Niels Henrik Abel died from tuberculosis only 26 ½ years old, but nevertheless impressed the mathematical world with his use of rigor in mathematics and his advanced mathematical ideas, where many are still actual in research and modern technology. His work was so revolutionary that one scholar stated: "He has left mathematicians enough to keep them buzy for five hundred years". Thus, it is not exclusivelly historical factors that are interesting about Niels Henrik Abel, but also a great deal of current actuality. The family moved to Gjerstad, Aust Agder county, when he was about 2 years old. His grandfather, Hans Mathias Abel, came as a vicar to Gjerstad municipality early in 1785. His father, Søren Georg Abel, became vicar in Gjerstad in 1804, following the death of his father.

Selv om han døde knapt 27 år gammel, etterlot han seg et livsverk som plasserer ham blant de største matematikere gjennom alle tider. Abel-jubileet blir i år feiret med mange arrangementer. Hovedfeiringen var Abel-konferansen i Oslo i juni i år, og i morgen vil jubileet bli markert på Froland Verk, hvor han døde 6. april 1829. Niels Henrik Abel er et av de få virkelig store genier vårt land har fostret - kanskje det største! Abel, Niels Henrik Norwegian mathematician. He demonstrated that the general quintic equation ax5 + bx4 + cx3 + dx2 + ex + f = could not be solved algebraically. Subsequent work covered elliptic functions, integral equations, infinite series, and the binomial theorem. In 1823 he provided the first solution in the history of mathematics of an integral equation and published a paper demonstrating that a radical expression to represent a solution to fifth- or higher-degree equations was impossible. In 1825, Abel went to Berlin, where he met Leopold Crelle (1780-1855), a privy councillor and engineer much taken with problems in mathematics. Together they brought out the first issue of Crelle's Journal, which was to become the leading 19th-century German organ of mathematics. It dealt with the sum of the integrals of a given algebraic function and presented the theorem that any such sum can be expressed as a fixed number of these integrals with integration arguments that are algebraic functions of the original arguments. Abel transformed the theory of elliptic integrals by introducing elliptic functions, and this generalization of trigonometric functions led eventually to the theory of complex multiplication, with its important implications for algebraic number theory.
