Chimpanzees Living in Zoos
Not all chimpanzees live in their natural African habitats, free to move about their territory in search of food and other chimpanzees. About 500 chimpanzees live in zoos in the United States alone. Some of the older chimpanzees in zoos today were born in the wild and captured for sale. Wild caught zoo chimpanzees are members of the "founder population" or chimpanzees not related to any chimpanzees already in zoos. The oldest chimpanzee in an American Zoo is a female, Little Mama, who lives in Lion Country Safari, West Palm Beach, Florida. Estimated to be born in 1938, she is thought to be nearly seventy years old.
Chimpanzees that make up the current zoo population are living longer than their predecessors. The current mean age of zoo chimpanzees is in the mid twenties. This low figure is due to a very high infant mortality rate. Infants born today that survive infancy can expect a longer life span because of an accumulation of knowledge of chimpanzee care gained over the past half century. They live in more natural and suitable housing, their diet is designed to be nutritious and appropriate for their digestive systems, and daily enrichment objects and activities increase mental stimulation while decreasing boredom, depression and lethargy. It is important for people visiting zoos to remember that chimpanzees are highly intelligent creatures capable of complex social behaviors, such as tool use and tool making. Social, by nature, chimpanzees suffer greatly when housed alone. People watching chimpanzees in zoos are often surprised at the similarity of chimpanzee bodies and behavior to their own. When approaching or watching chimpanzees in zoos, humans should respect their privacy, keeping their voices low and refrain from loud boisterous behavior.

World Zoos And Aquariums Develop Plan To Respond To The Extinction Of Frogs
ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2007) See also: In October 2005, WAZA, The World Zoo and Aquarium Association, therefore adopted a strong resolution calling on all zoos and aquariums to respond to the global extinction crisis facing the world's frogs and other amphibians. This is part of a wider approach led by IUCN - The World Conservation Union, which encompasses also conservation measures in the field. Many factors behind the extinction of frogs are still not well understood. However, it is known today that, in some parts of the world, there is a fungus causing the quick extinction of every amphibian species throughout the range. Experts are convinced that, in many cases, the only solution is to conserve them in zoos and aquariums with the hope that the species can be reintroduced to the wild at a later stage. This will require a massive coordinated effort, but it is a key solution in addressing the global amphibian extinction crisis. With a view to galvanising coordinated action by zoos and aquariums, experts of the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union, representatives of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and other stakeholders met from February 12 to 15 at El Valle, Panama, discussing how a global action plan should be implemented. They recommended criteria for prioritizing species and best practices for breeding facilities, and determined the capacity for rapid response.

Zoos and Aquariums Celebrate 10 Wildlife Conservation Successes SILVER SPRING, Maryland , December 18, 2007 (ENS) - From breeding toads back from extinction to developing a hormone test for North Atlantic right whales, 200 zoos and aquariums across the United States are working as members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to ensure the survival of rare and endangered animals. Today they issued a Top 10 List of wildlife conservation success stories for 2007. In the last five years, facilities accredited by the nonprofit Association of Zoos and Aquariums, AZA, funded 3,693 conservation projects in more than 100 countries. Annual spending on conservation by member organizations averages nearly $70 million per year. AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy said, "The 2007 top 10 list is just a small sample of the important work of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums." From amphibians to dolphins to gorillas, "AZA accredited institutions and their partners are at the forefront of wildlife conservation here in North America and around the world," said Maddy. Avoiding E. coli Infections
The recent reports of E. coli cases among children North Carolina, possibly caused by a petting zoo at the State Fair, has raised awareness of this serious illness. According to the CDC, people usually get E. coli infections from 'eating undercooked, contaminated ground beef,' however you can also become infected through 'person to person contact in families and child care centers,' from drinking raw milk, after swimming in or drinking water that has been contaminated with sewage, and by having contact with infected farm animals. Although some children with an E. coli infection simply get symptoms of diarrhea, which may be bloody, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and nausea, others can develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS, with anemia and kidney failure.

Pets occupy an esteemed place in many of our households, often being treated as members of the family. They offer a source of amusement, pleasure, and companionship. They provide opportunities for outdoor exercise and socialization. And, according to some studies, they can decrease our blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. But along with the emotional rewards and health benefits of pet ownership also come health risks. Petsand other animalscan give us diseases. Animal diseases that can be transmitted to humans are known as zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses. Some people are more likely than others to get zoonoses: the elderly, pregnant women, infants and children less than 5 years old, people undergoing treatments for cancer, people who have received organ transplants, and people with suppressed immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS.

    Tigers don't belong in zoos
But where can the big cats go? The deadly mauling in San Francisco underscores the paradox of zoos today. By Susan McCarthy
    • Share San Francisco Zoo image Tatiana It doesn't matter whether Tatiana, the tiger who attacked three people and killed one at the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day, was being teased or taunted. It doesn't matter because zoo animals shouldn't be able to escape from their enclosures no matter how rude people are to them. It also doesn't matter because even if the young men were doing nothing, or were making gestures of homage and respect, Tatiana had years of reasons to be in a bad mood. Tigers are among zoo visitors' favorite animals. They're also one reason many people hate zoos. Saddened by the picture of misery presented by the tiger who repetitively paces back and forth, back and forth, some people never go back. Zoos in a pickle over horse meat
By Brad Haynes Seattle Times staff reporter PREV of NEXT ROD AYDELOTTE / AP Kwanzaa, a young South African lion at Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas, celebrates his birthday with a cake made from 10 pounds of horse meat, plus whipped cream and a carrot. Animal-rights activists campaigning to end horse slaughter in America have run up against an unexpected friend of the horse-meat industry: the nation's zoos. After Texas shut down two horse-slaughter plants in January, the last plant in the country is fighting off closure in Illinois courts. And Congress, concerned with slaughter methods and the horse's iconic place in American history, is again considering a federal horse-slaughter ban that passed the House of Representatives last year. For Woodland Park and Point Defiance, the plant closures have presented practical concerns on top of any ethical ones, and they are exploring the possibility of switching entirely to beef in the months ahead.

San Diego Zoo officials say their animal enclosures go beyond the guidelines
By Jeanette Steele UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER December 27, 2007 Randy, 11, had been nervous because of the fatal Christmas Day mauling by a Siberian tiger at the San Francisco Zoo. But his mother, Deidra, reassured him that the zoo here probably was taking extra security measures with the tigers.
K.C. ALFRED / Union-Tribune The San Diego Zoo's Tiger River enclosure is bounded by a 16-foot fence on two sides and a 20-foot sheer concrete wall on the others. Other examples are more tragic: In 2004, police shot and killed a 340-pound gorilla that escaped its Dallas Zoo enclosure and injured three people, including a toddler, during a 40-minute rampage. Closer to home, a 2-year-old boy was mauled by a Siberian tiger that escaped in 1982 from an unlocked cage at the now-defunct Lion Country Safari in Orange County.
