About Us Contacts Research People
Introduction... Contacts Zoology is the study of animals, their behaviour, their physiology and evolution, as well as their interactions with each other and with their environment. Zoologists study how animals evolved and the impact of environmental change on their survival. They also study costs and benefits of conservation and ways to enhance species survival. The Department of Zoology has an international reputation for research in freshwater ecology, wildlife and conservation biology, neurobiology and animal behaviour, parasitology, genetics, environmental physiology and evolutionary studies. What is Zoology? Zoology is a branch of biology that includes the study of animals and animal life, including, but not limited to, the study of the structure, physiology and classification of animals. Zoology can be subdivided into two categories: Vertebrate Zoology and Invertebrate Zoology
    edit Vertebrate Zoology
Vertebrate means having a spinal column or back bone. Animals in this catergory include species of the phylum Chordata: fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. These are characterized by a segmented spinal cord and a distinct differentiated head. These animals possess internal skeletons which include the vertebral column which at least partially encloses the spinal cord and a skull which houses the brain. Vertebrates also usually possess two pair of limbs and an outer covering (fur, skin, feathers)..
    edit Invertebrate Zoology
Invertebrate means lacking a spinal column. Animals in this catergory include species of the following: protozoans, annelids, cnidarians, echinoderms, flatworms, nematodes, molluscs, and arthropods. Invertebrates make up 90% of the worlds animals. They range in size from minute to extremely large. They possess soft bodies and external skeletons. Welcome How animals live and why they live that way are questions addressed by zoologists. Most of the Australian fauna are poorly understood or not even formally named, yet informed management and resource use of Australia's flora, fauna and habitats depend upon zoological knowledge. We need to catalogue what species exist and how they survive in their natural environments. This requires knowledge of their physiology, breeding and reproductive systems, ecology, evolution and behaviour. Students enrolled in zoology subjects can learn a diversity of topics, ranging from the structure and function of the cells that make up animals, through anatomy and physiology, reproduction and development, evolution, ecology and behaviour. This knowledge is important for biomedical research, agricultural and fisheries practices, the management of natural resources, environmental planning and for understanding the natural world.
