Zodiac denotes an annual cycle of twelve stations along the ecliptic , the apparent path of the sun across the heavens through the constellations that divide the ecliptic into twelve equal zones of celestial longitude . The zodiac is the first known celestial coordinate system. There are two apparently independently-created zodiacs. Babylonian astrology, inherited by Hellenistic and Indian astrology, developed the zodiac of twelve signs familiar in the West. In Chinese astrology, months and years pass through a cycle of twelve animals that imply certain fortunes or misfortunes related to events occurring within those periods. The Chinese zodiac is not linked to constellations. The etymology of the term zodiac comes from the Latin zōdiacus , from the Greek , meaning "[circle] of animals", derived from , the diminutive of "animal". However, the classical Greek zodiac also includes signs (also constellations) that are not represented by animals (e.g., Libra, Virgo, Gemini). Another suggested etymology is that the Greek term is cognate with the Sanskrit sodi , denoting "a path", i.e., the path through which the Sun travels.

setSize(curSize); The Zodiac Killer is one of the great unsolved serial killer mysteries of all time, taking only second place to Jack the Ripper Even though police investigated over 2,500 potential suspects, the case was never officially solved. There were a few suspects that stood out, but the forensic technology of the times was not advanced enough to nail any one of them conclusively. chapter continues advertisement
This October, 1966 killing began a ghoulish series of murders that panicked the people of the San Francisco area. For years the Zodiac taunted the police with weird ciphers, phone calls, insulting and cryptic messages. Before it was all over, this clever and diabolical killer changed the lives of eight people, only two of whom lived to tell the tale. On the night of Sunday, October 30, 1966, long before anyone was to hear of the Zodiac, an 18-year-old student named Cheri Jo Bates was brutally murdered near the parking lot of Riverside City College's library annex. Neither rape nor robbery seemed to have been a motive, as her clothes were undisturbed and her purse was present and intact.

It was used as a method for counting years, months, days and hours in the Chinese imperial court and civil calendar, and as a system for forecasting one's future and determining one's character. Although replaced in modern times by the Gregorian calendar, the Zodiac is still used today (unofficially) as a popular method of divination in many Asian and Western nations. Furthermore, the Zodiac is the preeminent calendar of old-world Asia. Its 60-year (sexagenary) cycle is still of crucial importance to modern art historians, for it helps them pinpoint the date of artwork made in much earlier times.

It has been quite a while since I've done anything with The Zodiac Files, but finally, updates are on the way quite soon! The task of transcribing the literally hundreds of newspaper stories to textform is, to be quite honest, overwhelming, but thanks to the diligence of zodiologist Angela Avey (who is doing the transcribing), construction of the timeline is finally taking shape. I'm hoping to post the first few stories (as well as pics from the last few Zodiac Taskforce get-togethers) in the next week or so, so check back again soon!

    - Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: B : an entertaining ride, though it ultimately goes a bit overboard See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review Written in a fresh, funny style, Zodiac is an often enjoyable little ecological thriller. Narrator Sangamon Taylor, who works for a Greenpeace-like organization, GEE, in Boston, goes about saving the world, mainly by exposing (and stopping, by any means possible) the illegal dumping of chemicals by industry. It is an amusing premise, and Stephenson is right in finding the slightly wacky, very creative environmental action groups an ideal setting for a novel. Taylor lives a laid back, generally carefree life, without much respect for authority. Dealing with big corporations, who show absolutely no respect for the environment or EPA laws, he takes what they do very seriously, without taking them seriously. Sniffing nitrous oxide from huge Hefty bags, living and working with a cast of true characters (though not so far-out as to be truly annoying), Taylor is also very serious about his job, and very good at it.

    http://www.mrcranky.com/movies/zodiac.html
    Zodiac
    Mr. Cranky's rating:

By the time Fincher has covered all these characters, two hours and forty minutes have passed and the main score to the movie is the snoring of the audience.
The main problem with David ("Seven") Fincher's new thriller is that the supposed Zodiac killer, Arthur Leigh Allen (John Carroll Lynch), is kind of a bozo, yet the Zodiac killer we imagine, the one who taunts the cops and claims he'll never be caught, seems exceptionally smart. Allen is a pedophile and doesn't seem particularly bright, surely not bright enough to be a serial killer who can't be caught. I wanted the Zodiac killer, who's based on the real-life killer of the same name who tormented Californians in and around San Francisco during the 1970s, to be more like Anthony Hopkins's Hannibal Lecter from "Silence of the Lambs." You may have noticed Hopkins is essentially reprising a similar character in the upcoming "Fracture" a man who is so smart he outwits the police without hardly thinking about it. That's how the Zodiac killer should have been played. Criminals are usually caught because they're stupid and seeing the portrayal of Allen, you just sort of scratch your head thinking that this guy is probably being outwitted by the buttons on his own pants. The other thing "Zodiac" could have used was a whole lot more killing. I mean, you see a few of the murders early and they pretty much stop. The rest of the film is about the search for the killer. It's about the procedural parts of solving a murder. The word "jurisdiction" is either said or implied about twenty times and I can say with full confidence that the word "jurisdiction" is not a word you want spoken in your film very often, at least if you want it moving at a pace faster than bingo at the senior center.
