This issue particularly affects xenarthran taxa (including modern sloths and armadillos), as their teeth are comprised solely of dentine.

Preliminary results show that fossil dentine microwear can yield paleodietary information. The results of this study are significant not only in determining the significance of dentine microwear features in interpreting paleodiet, but also in allowing future comparison of dentine microwear with previous accounts of enamel microwear in order to gain a broader understanding of the mechanics of food scarring on different dental tissues. Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 3 items Xenarthra , order of mammals that includes armadillos anteaters , and sloths . The order takes its name from xenarthrous processes—extra pairs of joints in certain vertebrae, or spinal bones, found only in members of this order. This unique adaptation helps support the back during digging. Mammals in the Xenarthra order first appeared in South America during the Paleocene Epoch, about 65 million years ago. When a land bridge formed between North and South America in the Pliocene Epoch, roughly 5 million years ago, members of this order crossed to North America. Today these mammals can be found in Central and South America and the southern central and southeastern areas of North America. Apart from xenarthrous processes, armadillos, anteaters, and sloths have few similarities. All three have a good sense of smell, but anteaters have poor eyesight, whereas sloths and armadillos have relatively good vision. Armadillos also have a keen sense of hearing, while anteaters and sloths have poor hearing. Anteaters are known for their tubular snout and long tongue, which they use to eat ants and termites; armadillos eat insects, small vertebrates, and plants; and sloths eat only plants. Armadillos are ground dwellers and are active during the day or night. Most anteaters and all sloths live in trees and are active primarily at night.

Please choose an animal from the list below:
Order Xenarthra (a.k.a Edentata) Xenarthrans, also known as edentates, comprise a small group of some of the more unusual mammals. They are, for the most part, insectivores and herbivores, and are either terrestrial or arboreal in nature. They are found in the warmer climates of South America and North America, being found in Mexico and southern US in North America. Edentates usually lack incisors or canines, and of those that have them their molars lack enamel. Their teeth are held in by a single root each. Edentates have small brains. Anatomically, they have between 5-9 cervical vertebrae, whereas most other mammals have 7. Today, there are 29 species in 4 families; according to the fossil record there were at one time 12 families comprised of animals such as glyptodonts and giant ground sloths. The present-day families are: Dasypodidae (armadillos) 20 spp
Myrmecophagidae (anteaters) 4 spp
Bradypodidae (3-toed sloths) 3 spp
Megalonychidae (2-toed sloths) 2 spp Back Home

An order of new world mammals characterised by the absence of incisors and canines from among their teeth, and comprising the armadillos, the sloths, and the anteaters. The order is distinguished from all others by what are known as xenarthrous vertebrae (xenos, strange; arthron, joint): there are secondary, and sometimes even more, articulations between the vertebrae of the lumbar series. The order was formerly called edentata.
