Wetlands Easier - Wetlands are marshy areas where there is much moisture in the soil. Wetlands are sometimes covered in water. Swamps, marshes, and bogs are some of the names used for wetlands. Harder - "Wetlands are lands transitional between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or where shallow water covers the land and where at least one of the following attributes holds: 1) the land predominantly supports aquatic plants at least periodically; 2) undrained hydric soils are the predominant substrate; and 3) at some time during the growing season, the substrate is saturated with water or covered by shallow water." EPA definition at http://www.epa.gov/emap/html/dataI/wetlands/ There are two basic types of wetlands : coastal (also known as tidal or estuarine wetlands) and inland (also known as non-tidal, freshwater, or palustrine wetlands).

Mid-summer's night, St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, Florida F LORIDA'S ANCIENT HISTORY AS A SUBMERGED PLATEAU is still apparent today as much of the peninsula remains underwater. Florida's natural environment is dominated by wetlands: swamps and marshes that are distinguished by water at the surface or by water saturated soil. Wetlands are the transition zones between dry upland ecosystems and deeper aquatic habitats. Each Florida wetland area is unique according to its surrounding geologic, hydrologic, and climatic conditions. Wetlands are key to maintaining the health of Florida's naturally watery places; they provide flood control, aquifer recharge, coastal protection, and they also act as "kidneys" that help filter pollutants from the ecosystem. Wetlands support a wide range of rare and endangered aquatic plants and wildlife, and humans have relied on Florida's wetlands as a source of food and recreation for centuries. http://www.audubon.org/campaign/wetland/ecosystem.html
What’s a wetland anyway,
and why are they so important to protect?
Among the most important ecosystems on Earth, the wet ecosystems of bogs, freshwater marshes, prairie potholes, forested swamps, and salt-water estuaries provide critical nesting, rearing, feeding, and stop-over habitat for bird and other wildlife populations in watersheds across the nation. Wetlands are essential to estuary, river, and watershed health, trapping sediments and cleaning polluted waters, preventing floods, recharging groundwater aquifers, and protecting shorelines. Wetland health is intimately tied to human health. Wetlands began disappearing soon after permanent European colonization of the United States. More than half of the 215 million acres of wetlands that existed at the time of settlement have been destroyed. Only 100 million acres remain today. Throughout much of our nation’s history, wetlands were viewed as obstacles to development that should be eliminated. Federal laws provided incentives for draining and destroying wetlands. Only in the last twenty-five years have public and government understanding of the importance of wetlands grown enough to begin to change some incentives to protecting and restoring wetlands. Still, despite their now well-understood importance to ecosystem health, wildlife, families and communities, wetlands continue to be destroyed at an alarming rate, over 100,000 acres per year in watersheds across the country. As wetlands are destroyed, so too are vital natural habitats for many species of songbirds, frogs, fish and other birds and wildlife. As these species and their insect-based food chain disappear, whole ecosystems are disrupted. These changes impoverish our lives and our children’s future.

    WETLANDS: CRADLE OF SPECIES DIVERSITY
Wetlands marshy areas of land where the soil is saturated with water are crucial incubators of species diversity, as important as tropical rain forests and coral reefs. They exist on all continents, save Antarctica, and include salty coastal flats, such as estuaries, and inland systems. Scientists classify wetlands into bogs, swamps, marshes, and other types, depending on geography, soil, and plant life. Wetlands help filter pollutants and soil runoff from upstream sources, which helps keep rivers, bays, and oceans downstream clean. In this way, healthy wetlands help mitigate the negative effects that human and farm waste, and some byproducts of industrial pollution, have on our Nation's water. Wetlands help control inland flooding and forestall wave erosion along shorelines; they diminish drought damage. Coastal wetlands protect spawning and feeding grounds for valuable fish and shellfish. Mink, otter, and other mammal species thrive in North American wetlands, as do myriad plants and insects, amphibians, and reptiles. They are vital nesting grounds for birds. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wetlands are essential to the survival of about a third of the endangered animal and plant species in the United States, and about half of these species make use of wetlands at some point in their life.

Back to home page Protecting Wetlands Ohio EPA staff conducting a wetland assessment Until recently, wetlands have been largely ignored in evaluations of watershed water quality. Heightened awareness of their valuable function has led to a movement to include wetlands in these surveys. Ohio EPA is a national leader in the development and application of wetland assessment methods. These monitoring tools have been modeled after those used to evaluate streams and rivers by the Division of Surface Water’s Ecological Assessment Section, long recognized as the national standard for effective and comprehensive stream assessment methods and reporting.
Each year, Ohio EPA staff conduct biological monitoring to gauge the health and quality of Ohio’s wetland and water resources. During these surveys, Agency staff collect information including the kinds and numbers of organisms living in the area, the habitat quality, water levels and soil and water chemistry. This information is compared to conditions and data gathered from known high to poor quality sites. If an area is disturbed or affected by development or other factors, it will generally have less diversity of species and a lower number of sensitive species present.
Ohio EPA’s 401/Wetland Section is devoted to protecting wetlands. The section is divided into two parts, the
