Water also plays a fundamental role in the climate regulation cycle. Protection of water resources, of fresh and salt water ecosystems and of the water we drink and bathe in is therefore one of the cornerstones of environmental protection in Europe. The stakes are high and the issues transcend national boundaries and concerted action at the level of the EU is necessary to ensure an effective protection. Events

Document Actions Clean fresh water is essential to life. Unfortunately, since the Industrial Revolution, most of Europe's rivers have been treated more like a convenient way of transporting waste to the sea, destroying the biodiversity of thousands of kilometers of waterways, harming human health, and polluting coastal waters in the process. The past decades have seen significant progress in treating the sewage and industrial wastes which are being pumped into Europe's river systems, resulting in lower levels of most pollutants and a measurable improvement in water quality. The agricultural sector, on the other hand, has not made as much progress. Nitrate levels in Europe's rivers are still as high as they were at the beginning of the last decade. Not only the quality of water but also the quantity available for human use is of importance, and more and more frequently, there are problems with water scarcity around large cities and in southern Europe.

"Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink." "Rime of the Ancient Mariner,"
Samuel Coleridge More than 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water. When the Apollo space missions beamed back pictures of the Earth, public attention was caught by the image of a "Blue Planet," because of the vast expanses of ocean covering the globe. Yet despite this seemingly inexhaustible supply (approximately 370 billion billion gallons) of water on earth, access to clean drinking water remains a major challenge for a large percentage of the world's population. Almost 97 percent of the Earth's water is in the oceans and is too salty to drink. Less than 1 percent of the water on the earth is fresh water (the remaining two to three percent is frozen fresh water contained in glaciers and ice caps). Water is indispensable for life, not only for drinking water, but also for raising crops and animals for food. Fishing provides a major source of protein for much of the world's population. Throughout history, cities and villages have grown up near sources of water, for drinking, sustenance, and transportation. In this century, population growth has increased in areas where fresh water is relatively scarce. Water in these areas is a valuable commodity and, in some cases, great technological feats have been undertaken to provide a reliable source of water. In some areas, water quality is a serious concern and

What do you, the trees, and a hamster have in common? Give up? You all need water. All living things must have water to survive, whether they get it from a water fountain, a rain cloud, or a little bottle attached to the side of a hamster cage. Without water, your body would stop working properly. Water makes up more than half of your body weight and a person can't survive for more than a few days without it. Why? Your body has lots of important jobs and it needs water to do many of them. For instance, your blood, which contains a lot of water, carries oxygen to all the cells of your body. Without oxygen, those tiny cells would die and your body would stop working. Water is also in lymph (say: limf ), a fluid that is part of your immune system , which helps you fight off illness. You need water to digest your food and get rid of waste, too. Water is needed for digestive juices, urine (pee), and poop. And you can bet that water is the main ingredient in perspiration, also called
