General Virology
GENERAL CLASSIFICATION The viruses are a large group of obligate intracellular parasites capable of infecting a variety of different cell types. Viruses may contain either DNA or RNA as their genomic material and this material may be either single- or double-stranded. Single-stranded genomes may be of positive (i.e. mRNA) or negative (i.e. anti-mRNA) polarity. Surrounding and protecting the genome is a coat of protein ("capsid") arranged in one of several possible morphologies. Certain viruses also contain an additional phospholipid bilayer ("envelope") derived from the host cell and surrounding the protein capsid. This page will discuss the similarities and differences of these biological entities. Some of the viruses that cause disease in humans are described in the following table (or click here to see a viral classification flowchart): Virus Genome Polarity Segments Morphology Enveloped Diseases Picorna RNA +ss Icosahedral No Polio, Hepatitis A, Colds Toga RNA +ss Icosahedral Yes Encephalitis, Rubella

Welcome
Welcome to the web site of the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. Our Department is devoted to Education, Research, and Service in the areas of Virology and Bacteriology. Our areas of interest are diverse and include pathogenesis, viral oncology, vaccine development and evaluation, antibiotic resistance, and host responses to infection. Our expertise includes studies of respiratory viruses, viral gastroenteritis, HIV and AIDS, and microbial genomics. We also have a strong interest in emerging infectious diseases and biodefense. We provide a section on these pages devoted to topics such as influenza, SARS, anthrax and other potential bioterrorism agents, to serve as a community resource and summary of our research in these areas. On these pages, you will find much more information about the Education, Research, and Service activities of the department. If you would like any additional information, please

99% of Microbes
Category : Information From the January 2008 issue of Microbe : "Well more than 99% of microbes from the environent do not thrive in culture and, historically, remain uncharacterized". This is an astounding statistic. We only work on what we can propagate, naturally. But many microbes could be adapted to grow in culture, given time and effort. The potential benefits of studying such organisms are huge. But sadly, there is no funding to do this work. permalink Fri 21 Dec 2007
The Stupidity of Humans
Category : Commentary "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein During the holiday season, you might think it insensitive to post such a quotation. But as the end of the year approaches, I cannot help but remember all the stupid things my fellow species has done, and will continue to do in the next year. Or, to put it another way: 1. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 2. If you lined up all the cars in the world end to end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them, five or six at a time on a hill. In the fog.

Virology
A Biophysical and Evolutionary Research Perspective
Professor Jeffrey A. Sands : B-217 Iacocca Hall, e-mail jas0@lehigh.edu
Department of Biological Sciences
Lehigh University In this advanced course, we will study viruses at the levels of their molecular biology and genetics, and their interactions with the host organism. Our coverage will focus almost entirely on viruses that infect humans and cause serious disease. We will take a comparative approach, and ask questions from a biophysical and evolutionary perspective. Useful websites for up-to-date viral disease information are the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (including its journal Emerging Infectious Diseases ) and the World Health Organization . Lehigh has electronic subscriptions to many journals publishing new virology research; the ones we will use the most are Science the Nature journals (including Nature Medicine Journal of Virology Journal of General Virology Virology and Journal of Infectious Diseases
Grading : Half of your grade will be based on participation, discussions, assignments, quizzes, and presentations during the semester: 1. "professional level discussion/assignment" days during January and February; 2. "short journal article" presentations in late March and early April; 3. "long journal article presentations" in mid-late April; and 4. "announced quizzes" as deemed appropriate. The other half of your grade will be based on a final exam in May. You should establish a notebook for all of the material in this course. Build the notebook into a thorough, complete document (your own "2007 Virology Textbook") by the end of the semester. The final exam will be "open notebook".

Virology Graduate training in Virology is available in the GSBS Programs listed below. The Program descriptions provide information on specific research opportunities in the area of Virology as well as the research interests of the Program Faculty: In GSBS, students may affiliate with any Program at any time in their first two years of study. Alternatively, students may develop their own tailor-made program through the Interdisciplinary Studies option. Additional faculty who offer individual, interdisciplinary training in Virology may be identified by using keywords and our Search Engine. Financial aid , in the form of Graduate Research Assistantships, is made available to first year Ph.D. students by GSBS, particular Programs, and Individual faculty members. Following the first year, financial assistance is provided through training grants, research grants, and a large number of scholarships and fellowships A wide variety of factors (including its faculty, programmatic and curricular flexibility, financial aid package, facilities, and location) have led to a high
