48. Complementary, Alternative, And Holistic Veterinary Medicine (AltVetMed) Welcome
Information on acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal medicine, Homeopathy, nutritional therapy and other alternative modalities, from veterinarians Susan Wynn
http://www.altvetmed.org/
Welcome Welcome to the AltVetMed Web Site, your home for finding information about complementary and alternative therapies in veterinary medicine (CAVM). The AltVetMed site was founded in January 1996, by Jan Agar Bergeron, VMD and Susan Gayle Wynn, DVM. Recently, the site was moved to a new server and has undergone its first major design overhaul since its inception. With the new design, we hope to bring you much more information than we offered in the past. When the site was first launched, there were no other sites on the Web that dealt with CAVM. The largest and most visited veterinary medicine site on the Web at that time was NetVet, and most major veterinary associations did not even have Web sites. Today, all the major veterinary associations, veterinary schools, and CAVM organizations have Web sites. Many holistic veterinarians also have their own Web sites, and many conventional veterinary practices do as well. All of these new sites provide us with the opportunity to provide links to extensive information that was unavailable six years ago. Therefore, the new, redesigned AltVetMed site will become a portal for information on CAVM, as well as selected information on conventional veterinary medicine and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in general. For information on the AltVetMed Forum, please click on the "Discussion" link in the menu bar.

    Significant Points
    • Veterinarians should have an affinity for animals and the ability to get along with their owners. Graduation from an accredited college of veterinary medicine and a State license are required. Competition for admission to veterinary school is keen; however, graduates should have excellent job opportunities. About 3 out of 4 veterinarians work in private practice.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Veterinarians care for the health of pets, livestock, and animals in zoos, racetracks, and laboratories. Some veterinarians use their skills to protect humans against diseases carried by animals and conduct clinical research on human and animal health problems. Others work in basic research, broadening our knowledge of animals and medical science, and in applied research, developing new ways to use knowledge. Most veterinarians diagnose animal health problems; vaccinate against diseases, such as distemper and rabies; medicate animals suffering from infections or illnesses; treat and dress wounds; set fractures; perform surgery; and advise owners about animal feeding, behavior, and breeding.

    Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program
The pre-veterinary medicine program at North Dakota State University provides you the opportunity to complete all of the requirements for admission to any of the veterinary colleges in the United States.
    The Program
    Veterinary School Preparation
The pre-veterinary medicine program prepares students for admission to all veterinary colleges in the United States, Canada and selected foreign countries. Most North Dakota residents, however, prepare for admission to the veterinary colleges in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, Washington, Oregon or California because of contractual or Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE) admission agreements with these states. Pre-veterinary students who are North Dakota residents must register with the State Board of Higher Education, (701) 328-4114, in the year of their application, in order to establish eligibility for contract seats with veterinary colleges. These contract seats allow accepted North Dakota residents to attend participating veterinary colleges for in-state tuition. It is important for you, especially if you are not a resident of North Dakota, to identify early in the pre-veterinary medicine program those veterinary colleges to which you will most likely apply. A course catalog from that college is helpful when planning your pre-veterinary medicine program and in answering specific questions. It will be up to you to write or call for a catalog. In addition, your adviser should be a valuable resource on admission procedures. Application for veterinary school can be completed on the Veterinary Medical College Application System (VMCAS) website: http://www.vmcas.org
