Abstract - Geology and Vertebrate Paleontology of the Klukas Localities, Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota Martin, James E. 1989. Geology and Vertebrate Paleontology of the Klukas Localities, Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota. 18+ p. Abstract Geological and paleontological investigations of various sites within Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota (Figure 1), began in 1984, but it was not until the following year that attention was focused on Tertiary deposits in the northeastern corner of the Park (figure 2). In the fall of 1985, Mr. Rich Klukas, Research Biologist at Wind Cave National Park, found part of a merycoidodont weathering from pink siltstone referable to the White River Group. Mr. Klukas contacted me, and during the spring and summer of 1986, a number of collecting trips to the area produced a small collection of Oligocene fossils. The occurrence was announced by me at the 1986 annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

("Baucus Bill")
103rd Congress, 1st Session, S. ... In the Senate of the United States Mr. Baucus [D-MT] introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on ... A BILL
To provide for the protection of vertebrate paleontological resources on Federal lands, and for other purposes: Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This Act may be cited as the "Vertebrate Paleontological Resources Protection Act." SEC. 2. FINDINGS.
Congress finds that
Federal lands are a valuable resource of the people of the United States;
each individual who uses Federal lands
(A)
is exercising both a right and a priceless privilege; and
(B)
must accept the responsibility of careful stewardship of the lands so that the privilege can be exercised by future generations;
vertebrate paleontological resources on Federal lands and Indian lands are an accessible and irreplaceable part of the heritage of the United States and offer significant educational opportunities to all citizens;
vertebrate paleontological resources are increasingly endangered because of their commercial attractiveness and because many are rare or unique;

Palaeontological categories
Although different people might divide up the subject in different ways, most palaeontologists recognize the following broad categories: 1. Vertebrate palaeontology - the study of fossil animals with a backbone (e.g., fish, amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs [incl. birds], mammals). Many palaeontologists become interested in palaeontology through vertebrate palaeontology, but then (paradoxically in terms of palaeontology's public image) transfer to other fields. Vertebrate palaeontologists often become specialists on just one of the vertebrate groups (see list above); sometimes focusing on the details of just a few bones belonging to one species (e.g., forensic palaeontology of humans). Overall, vertebrate palaeontology centres on the basic identification of vertebrate fossils, their anatomy, functional morphology and evolution, but has applied value in some aspects of the study of ancient land environments. Relative to other palaeontological fields there are few academic training programmes in vertebrate paleontology, and the limited academic job opportunities tend to be in museums. There are very few non-academic professional positions. Vertebrate palaeontology can be very rewarding, but it isn't for everyone and requires a particularly high level of devotion.

    Outdoor Museum - Discovery Trail
    The new Discovery Trail addition to the Outdoor Museum at Big Bone Lick gives visitors a glimpse of the drama that unfolded at the springs in pre-history.
    Buffalo Herd
    The American buffalo, or bison, is the largest of all North American land mammals. Great buffalo herds once roamed this area and provided food, clothing and shelter for the Indians and pioneers. Hunted to near extinction, the last wild buffalo was seen in Kentucky around 1800. The park's herd is an effort to reestablish these animals at Big Bone Lick.
    Camping
    Spacious campground features 62 campsites with utility hookups, grills, a swimming pool and playground. Showers, rest rooms, and laundry facilities are available at a central service building. There is a grocery on-site for your convenience, which is open April 1-October 31. Closed for season from mid-November to mid-March.
