International Society of Vertebrate Paleontology Annual Meeting Savings Year
Most of us involved in one way or another in academia are probably not strangers to financial hardship. As a part-time student with a full-time job, I'm probably better off than most students, and I'm still below "livable wage," especially in my corner of the country. While travel grants are often available, funding a weekend trip to a society meeting can still break the bank.
I may be jumping the gun a bit, seeing as I haven't yet become a formal member of SVP , but I am 99.9% sure I want to go to next year's annual SVP meeting in Cleveland, OH. And I'm also sure that if I don't start saving for it now, I won't be able to afford it, come October.
So, for all of you poor paleo people ( ppp ) who are in the same boat, I propose we do an offshoot of National Novel Writing Month NaNoWrMo ) and set up a savings plan. The idea is to make a commitment to yourself and a few other people to save a certain amount of money, per week, to put towards travel costs. You can set a goal and monitor it on your site, much like NaNoWrMo folks, all the while inspiring other

For the Pliocene, small mammals are an effective means of correlating a magnetostratigraphy to the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale when radioisotopic dates are unobtainable. (back to top)

Scienze della Terra, Università di Roma "La Sapienza " Il Quaternario The Lower Pleistocene in the south-western part of the Bacino Tiberino (Central Italy, Umbria): lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic aspects - Several sections located in the southwestern branch of the Bacino Tiberino, where the S. Maria di Ciciliano Unit crops out, have been studied both from a lithological, sedimentological and neotectonical point of view, and from a paleontological and biostratigraphical one. An alluvional plain environment, in which both fluvial belt facies and flood plain facies are present, are testified in this unit. Malacofaunas and ostracofaunas show the existence of a marshy environment that evolves into a fluvio-lacustrine one. The ostracofaunas of Villa S. Faustino are characterised by two associations, respectively Cyprideis torosa dominated and Candona angulata dominated; they point out an alternant chemical composition of the waters, firstly oligo-mesohaline (NaCl influenced), then freshwater and, again, oligohaline (NaCl influenced). On the whole, a marshy environment with abundant vegetation is evidenced, which, towards the top of the section, is characterised by slowly flowing waters (abundance of Ilyocypris bradyi). The sandy body overlaying the silty-clay succession is characterised by high-energy waters and ostracods and molluscs are completely absent.

Advice for Students and Parents
Paleontological Research Institution
Ithaca, NY There is no luckier person than the person who can make their passion their career. Most professional paleontologists are just such lucky people. They are people consumed with a passion to understand the history of life on earth. Paleontology is fun, thrilling, and fascinating, but it is also hard work. It is not "easier" than the more traditional "core" science disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, or geology. In many ways, paleontology is more difficult than any other science because to be a good paleontologist you must know a great deal about all of these fields. Paleontology is among the broadest of sciences.
What is paleontology?
What background do I need in high school?
The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays is helpful for building up knowledge of fossils themselves. No matter how interested or knowledgeable a student is in paleontology, however, good overall grades in high school are almost always required for admission to a good college or university, which is a necessary prerequisite for a career in paleontology.

The American Museum of Natural History has great fossil collections for pretty much every vertebrate group, so it's no surprise that their South American collections are also outstanding. Much of the material was collected by George Gaylord Simpson, one of the most influential experts on South American paleomammalogy. Highlights include extensive collections of Casamayoran, Mustersan, Deseadan, and Colhuehuapian

Over 1,100 paleontologists converged on Bozeman, Montana, and the Museum of the Rockies October third through sixth for the 62nd annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology The Society, known as SVP, was founded in 1940 by only 34 paleontologists as an informal gathering where vertebrate paleontologists could gather and discuss their findings and hypotheses about paleontology. SVP now has over 2,000 members all over the globe and publishes the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology SVP is organized for scientific and educational purposes. The object of SVP is to "advance the science of vertebrate paleontology and to serve the common interests and facilitate the cooperation of all persons concerned with the history, evolution, comparative anataomy, and taxonomy of vertebrate animals, as well as field occurence, collection, and study of fossil vertebrates and the stratigraphy of the beds in which they are found." Conservation and preservation of fossils and fossil sites are also a concern of SVP. This year's SVP meeting included symposia on

Occasionally we find traces of soft parts, or even footprints, to tell us more about them. But we cannot watch them run or feed, and have to rely on informed speculation to interpret their ways of life.

WHAT DO VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGIST DO?
FIELD WORK: This is the location and collection of fossils specimens. It involves extraction of fossils from rocks or sediment and their transport to a research facility. Significant data regarding the orientation and spatial relationships of the fossil specimens, the exact geographic location at which they were found, and the exact rock horizon (stratigraphic position) is carefully recorded. Without the latter two pieces of information, the scientific value of the specimens is greatly diminished. These kinds of field information provide biostratigraphy (relative age of specimens), paleoecology (reconstruction ancient environments) and taphonomy (cause of death, burial history).
LABORATORY ANALYSIS: There are several steps to laboratory analysis. The first is preparation: the preservation, sorting, and reassembling of the fossil specimens collected from the field. Next is the study of these specimen, a close scrutiny of the material in order to deal with specific problems or series of problems. What kind of animal does the specimen represent? Is it like any other specimens that have been collected? But beyond the question of identification, vertebrate paleontologists are concerned with phylogeny (the animal's history and evolution), comparative anatomy (what is looked like, how it moved), systematics (relationships to other fossils or living animals), paleoecology (how the animal lived), etc.
