No radiation is used. The Ultrasound Division at Children's Hospital Boston is specially designed, equipped and staffed to obtain high quality ultrasound examinations of pediatric patients of any size, age and medical condition, including tiny newborns, small infants, toddlers, young children and maturing adolescents. Abdominal What is an abdominal ultrasound? An abdominal ultrasound is an ultrasound of the internal organs, including the liver, gall bladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and urinary bladder. Blood flow to some of these organs also can be checked. There are many indications for performing abdominal ultrasound including looking for a cause of belly pain, for stones in the gall bladder or kidney, or for a cause for enlargement of an abdominal organ. Pyloric stenosis, one cause of vomiting in babies, can be diagnosed with ultrasound. Appendicitis also can sometimes be diagnosed with ultrasound. How should the patient prepare for the procedure?

68. Ultrasound Tech Schools & Training For Ultrasound Technician Or Technologist
How to become a qualified ultrasound technician or technologist training through ultrasound tech schools to operate ultrasound machine and equipment.
http://www.learnultrasound.com/
Ultrasound Technician Schools
An ultrasound technician works with ultrasound equipment. They are used to look at organs and internal areas of the body that can not be seen by x-rays. These machines are commonly used for pregnant women to see the unborn child. Ultrasound schools teach the student how to use such machine and other equipment, along with teaching how to interact with patients and keep the equipment in good working order. When looking around at different ultrasound school a person needs to first understand the type of ultrasound courses they needs so they choose an institution that will enable them to learn everything they need. Ultrasound tech have to be able to use the equipment properly. They need to complete understand how the equipment works and how to troubleshoot problems with the ultrasound machine. They also need to be able to explain to patients what they are doing and answer any questions a person may have. They also need to understand how to treat each patient in a caring manner. In addition ultra sound technician must be able to analyze the pictures and determine what, if anything is wrong. They have to be able to communicate their findings to the doctor in a clear and complete way. In general ultrasound jobs are available throughout the medical community. Some ultrasound technician are employed with hospitals, while others work for health care facilities where they travel to people’s homes to perform their tasks. They are required to work in a variety of different situations. They have to work with a variety of people as well. Part of being a sonographer is being flexible and being able to work in an ever changing environment. No matter where a person works the ultrasound diagnostic school should have taught them how to handle every situation and be able to do a competent job.

69. Sound Technology
To begin, it s necessary to understand what sound is before one can understand ultrasound. Sound is our experience of the propagation of pressure waves
http://www.sti-ultrasound.com/ultra.htm
Home About STI Technology Products ... FAQ/News What is ultrasound?
To begin, it's necessary to understand what sound is before one can understand ultrasound. Sound is our experience of the propagation of pressure waves through some physical elastic medium. Usually the medium is air, but liquids generally work even better. The pressure waves are generated from some type of mechanical disturbance. Sound is a transfer of power as well. Mechanical energy is being converted to a wave form that radiates energy away from the disturbance. Mechanical vibrations become vibrating pressure waves, transferring energy to the medium and to objects that the wave contacts. Human hearing is limited. If the vibrational frequency is too fast, too high a frequency, we can't hear it. This is ultrasound, vibrations too fast for us to hear.
Vibrations Too Fast To Hear.
Human hearing can't go beyond about 18,000 vibrations per second, or 18 kHz. There are mammals that can hear well above this. Bats and whales use echolocation that can reach frequencies above 100 kHz. Higher frequencies have a shorter wavelength. A smaller size allows them to reflect from objects more readily and to give greater information about those objects. Extremely high frequencies are difficult to generate and to measure. There is an upper boundary to usable ultrasound, around 10 MHz (10 million cycles per second) currently, although higher frequencies are possible.
18 kHz to 10 MHz
Generally, the higher frequencies are used for medical imaging, such as investigating a fetus in the mother's womb. The lower frequencies, 1 MHz or less, having longer wavelengths and greater amplitude for a given input energy, produce greater disruption of the medium. Think of the sound system at a night club: the high frequencies "go right through your head," but the low frequencies actually cause your chest to resonate to the beat. Lower frequencies could affect the tissues being studied or introduce unwanted noise into the imaging process.

The first time I saw the ultrasound image, I saw the little bones and the legs and I realize that that s part of me. That it s alive and it s in my care.

October 15, 2007
Halle Berry promotes fetal ultrasounds It was an odd promotion, but I'll take it, Halle Berry's October 12 appearance on David Letterman , which made TV's Top 5! today: Powered by AOL Video Berry also had this answer to the question, "What beautiful discoveries are you experiencing [about pregnancy]?" in an Inquirer.net piece published yesterday... It's an amazing feeling to know that a life is actually growing inside my body. The first time I saw the ultrasound image, I saw the little bones and the legs and I realize that that's part of me. That it's alive and it's in my care. This protective motherly instinct has taken over. I'm very protective of my belly area now. I'm very careful about where I walk and what I eat. I try to get enough rest. While unmarried Berry is a poor role model for black women, already in crisis with a 70% illegitimate delivery rate, her baby is a blessing nonetheless. And I'll take her free advertisement of the value ultrasounds bring to reveal the humanity of preborn babies and also enhance parental bonding. 73. High-energy Ultrasound Sharpens View Of Liver Tumors
A highenergy form of ultrasound imaging produces pictures of liver tumors that are better than those made with traditional ultrasound, according to results

High-energy Ultrasound Sharpens View Of Liver Tumors
ScienceDaily (Jan. 11, 2008) See also: The study suggests that the imaging method known as Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) ultrasound might offer a new tool for screening patients at increased risk for liver cancers, according to the researchers. They say it might also play a useful role in guiding biopsy procedures and minimally invasive therapies aimed at destroying cancerous tissues found deep in the abdomen. First developed six years ago by Duke biomedical engineers Gregg Trahey and Kathy Nightingale, ARFI uses high-energy sound waves to push on tissues like sonic fingers. A tracking beam then captures the movement of the tissue, providing a measure of its elasticity or stiffness. "To our knowledge, these are the first images of abdominal malignancies in humans that show tissue elasticity," said Trahey, professor of biomedical engineering, radiology and medical physics at Duke. The preliminary findings, which represent the Ph.D. thesis work of Trahey's former graduate student Brian Fahey, have already led Siemens to pursue a product prototype that will combine traditional ultrasound with ARFI, he added. In general, primary liver cancers are soft while those that have spread from other organs are hard. ARFI may be able to tell the difference between hard and soft tumors, Trahey said. "If borne out in further studies, [that discriminating ability] suggests that ARFI may be useful in guiding treatment decisions."

For many expectant parents, ultrasounds offer a window into the world of their growing unborn baby. Unlike most standard prenatal tests that involve nothing more than a urine cup or a needle, ultrasounds present the opportunity to get a sneak preview of what's to come and to actually see what's going on inside - if the heart is beating normally or if the baby registry should contain pink or blue items. Despite all of the whimsical notions that many parents-to-be have about ultrasounds, they're still medical procedures that require a health provider's order. However, a test that was once used solely by medical professionals is now being utilized by businesses in strip malls and shopping centers to sell keepsake prenatal portraits and videos.
