However, it is important to note that the routine use of ultrasound is questioned, even by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in healthy, low risk pregnancies. The most frequent reasons for its use are:
  • Dating of the pregnancy
  • Rule out ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancy)
  • Check for fetal viability, particularly after bleeding or other complication

    Stanford Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship
Beginning with the 2007-08 Fellowship cycle and yearly thereafter Stanford Emergency Medicine is offering an Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship that is open to outside application. This fellowship will be based on the ACEP Guidelines for Ultrasound Fellowships, but it will be enhanced by training in both our Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments and with ultrasound experts outside the Emergency Department setting. Stanford is a world-class tertiary referral center and has exceptional specialty
training in many fields; we draw on that fact to augment your training. The Fellowship will combine the best of both worlds: ultrasound in the ED, and great depth and breadth of experience in other related fields that will deepen your knowledge base considerably.
Outside the ED, specifically related to ultrasound, we have a dedicated Children's Hospital (Lucile Packard Children's Hospital) with their own ultrasound suite, and at the main hospital, superb cardiac echo and radiology departments. We enjoy an exceptional relationship with our Trauma Surgery service, which uses ultrasound routinely, and our Radiology Department has been exceptionally supportive of our ultrasound program. They also have phenomenal high-end didactic education. Our Cardiology Echo Lab has also been highly supportive of our Fellowships and ultrasound research. We will be using these and other resources in our Fellowship.

    Ultrasound
    What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound procedure is a non-invasive (the skin is not pierced) diagnostic procedure used to assess soft tissue structures such as muscles, blood vessels, and organs. Ultrasound uses a transducer that sends out ultrasonic sound waves at a frequency too high to be heard. When the transducer is placed at certain locations and angles, the ultrasonic sound waves move through the skin and other body tissues to the organs and structures within. The sound waves bounce off the organs like an echo and return to the transducer. The transducer picks up the reflected waves, which are then converted by a computer into an electronic picture of the organs or tissues under study.

Ultrasound may change baby's cell growth
June 9, 1999 (from CNN.com) Web posted at: 3:10 PM EDT (1910 GMT) LONDON (Reuters) Ultrasound scans, routinely used to look at internal organs and to monitor the growth of a developing fetus, can stop cells from dividing normally, Irish scientists said Wednesday. Researchers at University College in Dublin told New Scientist magazine it is too early to tell if the changes they found in the cells of mice are harmless or what the implications of the findings could be for humans. "It has been assumed for a long time that ultrasound has no effect on cells," said Patrick Brennan, who led the research team. "We now have grounds to question that assumption." During the study, the rate of cell division in mice that were given an 8 megahertz scan lasting 15 minutes was 22 percent lower than normal, and the rate of cell death doubled. Routine hospital scans use frequencies between 3 and 10 megahertz and can last up to 60 minutes. Brennan said the sound waves of the scans could be damaging the DNA in cells, which could delay cell division and repair, or it might be switching on p53, a tumor suppressor gene that controls cell death.

If an ultrasound gives you a date of how far along you are is it possible you could have been pregnant 5 weeks ago and still had your period and the ultrasound be off?
Sponsored Content Pregnancy Taking care of yourself with baby on the way.
      Answer
The ultrasound doesnt give you the date. It is estimated by the days you give to the doctors to help, narrow down the date. The first day of your last period and how long youve missed help them in determining your conception date. The picture shows them an image of a fetus and they use that picture to say at what developmental stage the baby is in. Anything is possible.
      Answer
Contrary to the opinion above, the ultaasound does give you an approximate date of conception. By comparing the results of millions of ultrasounds physicians can calculate the age of the fetus based on head diameter, bone length, and other measurements on the fetus. They are usually accurate to within two weeks of when you are due to deliver. Since some women have irregular periods, it is not always possible to calculate the date based on the first day of the last period. Trust the ultrasound!
