Scope of Deliverables This section describes the uses of ultrasound in the food industry. A general theory about the mechanism of microbial inactivation is presented. Data from inactivation of food microorganisms are scarce, and most applications of ultrasound involve its use in combination with other preservation methods. This review points to the need for more research on microbial inactivation in food systems when ultrasonication is used with other methods. 1. Introduction 1.1. Definition, Description and Applications 1.2. Mechanisms of Microbial Inactivation The bactericidal effect of ultrasound is generally attributed to intracellular cavitation (Hughes and Nyborg 1962). It is proposed that micro-mechanical shocks are created by making and breaking microscopic bubbles induced by fluctuating pressures under the ultrasonication process. These shocks disrupt cellular structural and functional components up to the point of cell lysis. 1.3. Summary of Microbial Inactivation Kinetics

Our ultimate goal is to provide moms, dads, and their families with a safe, informative, and memorable ultrasound experience. In the past, moms and dads could only see black and white images of their unborn child through a traditional 2D ultrasound. With 3D/4D imaging technology, expectant parents will experience a fully-rendered ultrasound with real-time movement. As you can see below, this new generation of ultrasound technology provides a much more detailed look at the fetus. This allows families to clearly see their babies for the very first time. These incredible images provide a bond between parents and child that could only be experienced at birth ... until now. About Emergency Medicine Ultrasound
ltrasound is a growing subspecialty of emergency medicine that is quickly becoming the standard of care in the United States. The benefits of ultrasound have been documented in the emergency medicine literature. The best way to learn emergency medicine ultrasonography is from other emergency medicine physicians experienced in the field. Ultrasound is now part of the standard emergency medicine curriculum and is found on both the inservice and board examinations. Its use is supported by both the U.S. Health Care Finance Administration and many HMOs such as Kaiser Permanente. Ultrasound has many applications in the emergency department, trauma bay and private offices. Ultrasonography of the gallbladder for visualization of stones, renal ultrasounds for hydronephrosis, endovaginal ultrasound to confirm live intrauterine pregnancies or ovarian cysts are simple tests that can save time and money.
Overburdened radiology units can rarely give you the immediate answers you want and need. Lower extremity duplex ultrasonography to rule out DVT can be done in less than five minutes. No longer will you have to admit patients while they await a vascular study the next day. Putting patients on heparin while they await a study costs money and places them at risk for bleeding. The accuracy of a rapid lower extremity ultrasound approaches 97% or greater.

Ask about Ultrasound.
When is a breast ultrasound exam appropriate?
Recently, ultrasound has come into use as a valuable secondary examination for breast disease, after mammography. Which groups of women benefit most from breast ultrasound?
Dense breasts are more common in younger, pre-menopausal women. For these individuals, ultrasound may be an effective supplement to mammography for obtaining a clear and comprehensive picture of the breast. Post-menopausal women taking some form of hormone replacement therapy (such as estrogen) are also more likely to have dense breasts. For pregnant women who need breast exams for any reason, ultrasound is an excellent choice, since it does not involve the ionizing radiation used in mammograms. For women who have cysts or other breast masses, an ultrasound breast exam may be a quick and accurate method for determining whether the mass, as detected by mammography or physical examination, is a harmless cyst (a liquid-filled sac within the breast) or a solid mass, which can be cancerous.

Studies of the lower exposures common in the 1970s and 1980s are fairly reassuring. But since 1993, allowable exposure levels have risen dramatically, and little research has been done on the effects of these higher doses. When ultrasounds provide useful medical information, such as due date or indications of malformations, most doctors consider the risks acceptable. After a medical ultrasound exam, parents typically take home a simple 2D printout showing their fetus, and such pictures have become a virtual ritual of pregnancy in many industrialized countries.

    What is an Ultrasound?
    Ultrasound
(US) imaging is a method of obtaining images of internal organs in the body by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body. The image itself is the sound wave echoes of the ultrasound. As the sound waves bounce against objects, its echoing waves can be used to identify how far away the object is, how large it is, its shape and its internal consistency, be it fluid, solid or mixed. These sound waves are instantly measured and displayed on a computer as a video or still picture. More advanced three-dimensional, or 3D ultrasounds , are able to format the sound wave data into 3-D images. A benefit of ultrasound is that no ionizing radiation is involved, unlike conventional x-rays. In pregnancy, obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to visualize and determine the condition of a pregnant woman and her embryo or fetus. Why Would I Have an Ultrasound?

Sound waves are sent and received through a small hand held device known as a transducer. The returning sound waves are used to produce the images. New ultrasound technology allows us to look in great detail at soft tissue abnormalities around joints, tendons, and muscles. In experienced hands, it is a highly accurate technique which can be used to diagnose a large variety of soft tissue abnormalities. Hospital for Special Surgery has expertise in musculoskeletal ultrasound which is not readily available at routine ultrasound departments.

Ultrasound
What is an ultrasound? Ultrasonography, which is sometimes called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, tissues, and organs. Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs as they function, and to assess blood blow through various vessels. Ultrasound procedures are often used to examine many parts of the body such as the abdomen, breasts, female pelvis, prostate, scrotum, thyroid and parathyroid, and the vascular system. During pregnancy, ultrasounds are performed to evaluate the development of the fetus.
How are ultrasounds performed? Ultrasounds may be done on an outpatient basis, or as part of inpatient care. Although each hospital may have specific protocols in place, generally, an ultrasound procedure follows this process:
  • A gel-like substance is smeared on the area of the body to undergo the ultrasound (the gel acts as a conducer).
  • Using a transducer, a tool that sends ultrasound waves, the ultrasound is sent through the patient's body.

FDA Cautions Against Ultrasound 'Keepsake' Images
By Carol Rados It's risky business taking pictures of unborn babies when there's no medical need to do so. That's the word from the Food and Drug Administration, which is concerned about companies trying to turn an important medical procedure into a prenatal portrait tool. Facilities with captivating names such as Fetal Fotos, Peek-a-Boo, Womb with a View, and Baby Insight are popping up in strip malls and shopping centers all over the country. And they're promoting "keepsake videos" that use the latest ultrasound technology to produce high-resolution three-dimensional and four-dimensional (moving) images showing the surface anatomy of babies developing in the womb. The lure of this burgeoning industry is that parents-to-be get to see characteristics like facial features, hair, and even the baby's sex, and often they can count fingers and toes before their baby is born. Some women even have videos made at various stages of their baby's growth. And the videos are often being marketed as a prized addition to collections of childhood memorabilia. As compelling as these sneak previews may be, the FDA is warning women about the potential hazards of getting keepsake videos. The agency also is warning companies against creating them for entertainment purposes. While ultrasound has been around for many years, expectant women and their families need to know that the long-term effects of repeated ultrasound exposures on the fetus are not fully known. In light of all that remains unknown, having a prenatal ultrasound for non-medical reasons is not a good idea.

You don't have be too afraid though, because ultrasounds are actually a painless and quick part of fertility treatment. Ultrasound is also invaluable to fertility specialists, as it allows them to assess your reproductive health and monitor treatments quickly and easily. What is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound therapy is a technique used by medical professionals to examine parts of your body that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. It is often used to look inside your abdomen or chest in order to get a good look at vital organs and bodily structures. Ultrasound imaging is very similar to the x-ray, only without any of the side effects of radiation. How does an Ultrasound Work?
