Geometric Topology This area of mathematics is about the assignment of geometric structures to topological spaces, so that they "look like" geometric spaces. For instance, compact two dimensional surfaces can have a local geometry based on the sphere (the sphere itself, and the projective plane), based on the Euclidean plane (the torus and the Klein bottle), or based on the hyperbolic plane (all other surfaces). Similar questions in three dimensions have more complicated answers; Thurston showed that there are eight possible geometries, and conjectured that all 3-manifolds can be split into pieces having these geometries. Computer solution of these questions by programs like SnapPea has proved very useful in the study of knot theory and other topological problems.

Abstract
The effect of plastic deformation on the grain boundary surface area per unit volume and edge length per unit volume is examined using two methods. First, by applying homogeneous deformations to tetrakaidecahedra in a variety of orientations, and then by using the principles of stereology. It is shown that the methods produce essentially identical results. It is now possible to calculate changes in the grain parameters as a function of a variety of deformations, for combinations of deformations, for complex deformations, and for cases where it is not necessary to assume an idealised grain microstructure. Six-lobe city design The Design Standards for carfree cities as established in the Introduction can be achieved in a city that offers an excellent quality of life. Considerable thought has been given to the arrangement of a city which best fulfills the design standards. The resulting Reference Design described below and on the Districts and Blocks pages is for a city of about one million people, but the design can be adapted to cities with populations between about 300,000 and 3,000,000.

100 Districts
About 100 districts would be constructed, each roughly 760 meters (2500 feet) in diameter, with streets radiating from the central transport halt. The districts are arranged in a six-leaf-clover pattern. Of the 100 districts, the 18 farthest from the city center are "utility areas." These non-residential areas are reserved for various infrastructure requirements, heavy industry, and parking.

Andrew Blumberg Stanford University K-theory and abstract homotopy theory Algebraic K-theory of a ring encodes the "higher homotopy theory" of the derived category. I will discuss recent work with Mandell which makes this slogan precise by giving an explicit description of the K-theory space of a Waldhausen category in terms of the Dwyer-Kan simplicial localization of the category. This allows us to prove a very general criterion for functors to induce an equivalence of K-theory, and also has applications in the study of the K-theory of nonconnective ring spectra. Michael Ching Johns Hopkins University Chain rules for Goodwillie calculus I'll explain work (joint with Greg Arone) to understand chain rules for Goodwillie's homotopy calculus. In order to express these chain rules, we produce nice models for the derivatives of various functors that have extra algebraic structure. In particular, we get a deeper understanding of where the operad structure on the derivatives of the identity comes from. These models should work in a much wider context than functors of topological spaces, and if there's time and interest, I'll mention some applications of these ideas to the algebraic K-theory of A

The text was typed in TeX by Sheila Newbery, who also scanned the figures. Typos have been corrected (and probably others introduced), but otherwise no attempt has been made to update the contents. Genevieve Walsh compiled the index. Numbers on the right margin correspond to the original edition's page numbers. Thurston's Three-Dimensional Geometry and Topology , Volume 1 ( Princeton University Press , 1997) is a considerable expansion of the first few chapters of these notes.     Abstract
    We present a case study of visualizing the global topology of the Internet MBone. The MBone is the Internet's multicast backbone. Multicast is the most efficient way of distributing data from one sender to multiple receivers with minimal packet duplication. Developed and initially deployed by researchers within the Internet community, the MBone has been extremely popular for efficient transmission across the Internet of real-time video and audio streams such as conferences, meetings, congressional sessions, and NASA shuttle launches. The MBone, like the Internet itself, grew exponentially with no central authority. The resulting suboptimal topology is of growing concern to network providers and the multicast research community. We create a geographic representation of the tunnel structure as arcs on a globe by resolving the latitude and longitude of MBone routers. The interactive 3D maps permit an immediate understanding of the global structure unavailable from the data in its original form as lines of text with only hostnames and IP addresses. Data visualization techniques such as grouping and thresholding allow further analysis of specific aspects of the MBone topology. We distribute the interactive 3D maps through the World-Wide Web using the VRML file format, thus allowing network maintainers throughout the world to analyze the structure more effectively than would be possible with still pictures or pre-made videos.
