There's one thing about living in our area of South Carolina - there's no shortage of thunderstorms. I realized I was passing up some great opportunities to get audio files by taking the storms for granted. One day this summer, I got myself organized and took the digital camcorder outside (remaining in a safe area) to capture the sound of the storm. The result was several audio clips that I extracted from the tape. For the fun of it, I went to NOAA and got one of their incredible photos to use as a backdrop for a one-frame project. To that one frame, I added several of my thunderstorm sound clips. If you loop the clips and crank up the volume, the effect can get quite dramatic and very realistic.

Objectives
  • Explain the causes of thunderstorms.
  • Explain the causes of lightning and thunder.
  • Be able to determine the distance to a thunderstorm.
  • Discuss the dangers of thunderstorms.
  • Discuss safety during a thunderstorm.
  • Discuss tornadoes.
  • Discuss when and where tornadoes are most likely to happen.
  • Discuss safety during a tornado.
  • Discuss the characteristics of a hurricane.
  • Discuss the causes and types of damage from a hurricane.
  • Discuss when and where hurricanes occur.
  • Discuss how hurricanes are named.
  • Discuss hurricane safety. This section addresses, in whole or in part, the following Georgia GPS standard(s):
    • S6E4b. Relate unequal heating of land and water surfaces to form large global wind systems and weather events such as tornados and thunderstorms.
    • S6E6a. Explain the role of the sun as the major source of energy and its relationship to wind and water energy.
This section addresses, in whole or in part, the following Benchmarks for Scientific Literacy:
    • Because the earth turns daily on an axis that is tilted relative to the plane of the earth's yearly orbit around the sun, sunlight falls more intensely on different parts of the earth during the year. The difference in heating of the earth's surface produces the planet's seasons and weather patterns.

    Understanding the weather

    An ancient terror: thunderstorms
From mythology... to science. In Ancient Greece, the Cyclops gave Zeus a weapon that ensured the Olympians' victory: lightning. With its help, the supreme god vanquished the Giants, the Titans and the monster Typhon. The ancients often believed that thunderstorms meant the gods were angry and feared them. In the middle of the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin discovered the electrical origin of lightning. His experiments led him to design the lightning conductor. But it was not until photography was invented that the mystery of lightning was solved.
Development of a thunderstorm A ubiquitous energy The transformation of liquid water into vapour requires an energy called latent heat of evaporation
The opposite effect, called condensation , frees the same quantity of energy.

Inside This Article Why are there more thunderstorms during the summer? Lots More Information See all articles According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service , approximately 1,800 thunderstorms are occurring at any given time, resulting in about 16-million thunderstorms each year. Most thunderstorms last about 30 minutes and are typically about 15 miles (24 km) in diameter. The two biggest threats associated with most thunderstorms are lightning and flash floods. To understand why thunderstorms occur more often during the warm months requires some understanding of thunderstorm basics.

    Thunderstorms In Michigan
Severe thunderstorms are storms accompanied by strong wind, lightning, heavy rain, and sometimes hail or tornadoes. These storms are possible at anytime in Michigan; however, most occur from May through September. Thunderstorms occur when the right conditions are present. This is when a layer of warm moist air meets a layer of cool dry air. This forms thunderhead clouds which are also known as Cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds are enormous and contain a large amount of energy and water.
    Hazards of Thunderstorms
There are four main hazards that can occur during thunderstorms. These hazards are hail, lightning, tornadoes, and severe winds. Hail usually falls around the middle of the storm along with the heaviest rain. Hail stones can come in many sizes. Hail is usually pea to golf ball size, but it has been known to get as large as a baseball. Hail is formed when strong winds carry the rain above the freezing level. Eventually the hail gets to the point where it's too heavy for the wind to support and so it falls to the Earth. When the hail falls it causes damage to crops, automobiles, homes, wildlife, and can injure people. Lightning is a random occurrence of a thunderstorm's high level of energy. An intense electric field is present inside of a thunderstorm. When the force of the positive and negative energy inside the storm becomes great enough, lighting occurs. When this occurs it can heat the air around it to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. On average, lighting kills and injures more people a year then tornadoes and hurricanes.

    Description
Programming Operation Thunderstorms Description The Thunderstorms program allows the user to look at a surface observation map and annotate features relevant to thunderstorm activity. These features include: region of high dew point temperatures, warm fronts, cold fronts, dry lines, and thunderstorm symbols. It also allows the user to look at strategically placed soundings in the region.
click for whole shot Objectives The primary objective of the Thunderstorms program is to show how all the above features work together to produce area of thunderstorm activity. It also helps them map out how each feature relates to the other geographically (high dew points ahead of dry line, dry line ahead of cold front, etc.). Programming Theory There isn't much to the Theory, the drawing commands are similar to that found in Contour, with the exception that the high dew point temperature region is a filled polyLine with a transparent middle. Since in Java, a polyLine's first and last point must be the same, and that doesn't have to be the case in normal drawing, I simply add an extra x-y pair to the vector once the drawing is done. To avoid program failures, the filled portion of the area remains off until drawing has ceased. The soundings window is a simple variant of SlideViewer.
