Home Displays Installations Collections ... Contact The Most Beautiful Periodic Table Displays in the World We are very pleased to announce the availability of a new line of periodic table displays which we are producing in partnership with Theodore Gray in the USA. These large installations are intended for public access in museums, science centers and other locations where the elements are a subject of interest. The first of these displays was recently installed at DePauw University in Indiana (see story on the right). Scroll down to explore each element in the display.
Three things make these displays more than just a collection of elements. First, we have gone to some lengths to include, along with the samples themselves, interesting examples of each element's application in the world. If you click on any of the element cubes in the large photo-mosiac below, you can explore the range of exhibits we have included.
Secondly, we have designed the installation to be interactive with built-in touch sensors. Selecting any of the element symbols calls up detailed text and photographic information about the selected substance on a computer (an Apple iMac) built into the cabinet. In many cases this information includes video footage showing spectacular experiments and industrial uses of the element in question. We plan to make these video available here on this website in due course.

The periodic table is the most important reference a chemist has because it puts all the known elements into a meaningful pattern. Elements are arranged left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number. This order generally goes with increasing atomic mass. The number of elements in a period increases as one moves down the periodic table because as the energy level of the atom increases, the number of energy sub-levels per energy level increases. In 1869, the Russian chemist Mendeleev noted that the repeating patterns of behavior could be arranged in a sequence of elements. This led to the

NOTE: You need to be using a Java-enabled browser to view this applet Element Information
Click on an element in the table to get information for that element. Data are displayed below the table. Coloring by Numbers
Use the shading control to shade the table according to the values of the physical properties of the elements. The color scale indicates the colors assigned to the relative values of the property being displayed along with the maximum and minimum values. The actual colors and degree of shading will depend upon the computer hardware and browser software being used. Shading by atomic number is displayed when the applet begins. Jigsaw Puzzle
Pressing the "New Puzzle" button will scramble the elements. The object is to drag each element to its proper location in the table. Several different subsets of elements may be selected. Pressing the "Solve" button will cause the currently selected element to return to its proper location in the table. Pressing the "Solve All" sends all remaining puzzles pieces back to their proper locations. Molar Mass Calculator
Click on the "Formula" check box to calculate molar masses for compounds. To enter an element in a compound, click on that element in the table. Use the digit and parentheses buttons to complete a formula. The formula entry blank does not accept keyboard input. You will have to use your pointing device (mouse) to "click out" the formula. The resulting formula mass is rounded to the precision of the least precise atomic mass.

55. Periodic Table By Theodore Gray
Theo Gray set out to remedy this obvious misunderstanding by creating a periodic table, at the same time filling the Wolfram Research front end group s need
http://www.mathpuzzle.com/Periodic.htm
An expanded, improved, interactive and up-to-date version of this is at http://theodoregray.com/PeriodicTable/ In the well over a century since its invention by Dr. Mendeleev, the world has consistently failed to notice the word "Table" clearly contained in the name "Periodic Table", and has insisted in printing it on paper, hanging it on the wall, putting it in the back of chemistry textbooks, and generally doing all kinds of things with it that having nothing to do with being a table. Theo Gray set out to remedy this obvious misunderstanding by creating a Periodic TABLE, at the same time filling the Wolfram Research front end group's need for a conference table for their office space. It joins Theo's elegant, innovative, and of course angular " Triangle Table ." The Periodic Table was trickier to construct, due to sources disagreeing on the melting point of iron and such. It is still a work in progress, since we hope to safely store samples of all samples that can be stored safely. Currently, we need samples of Beryllium, Scandium, Hafnium, Vanadium, Niobium, Ruthenium, Cobalt, Iridium, and Boron. Small sealed samples are desired of Strontium, Barium, Yttrium, Lutetium, Osmium, Rhodium, Phosphorus, Arsenic, Tellurium, and all of the Lanthanides except Cerium. Of the Actinides, we have Am. We hope to get reasonably safe Th, Ur samples (I remember as a kid handling a 5kg brick of Ur at the Smithsonian).

Model Periodic Table Applications

The modern periodic table, based on atomic number and electron configuration, was created primarily by a Russian chemist, Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, and a German physicist, Julius Lothar Meyer, both working independently. They both created similar periodic tables only a few months apart in 1869. Mendeleev created the first periodic table based on atomic weight. He observed that many elements had similar properties, and that they occur periodically. Hence, the table’s name. His periodic law states that the chemical and physical properties of the elements vary in a periodic way with their atomic weights. The modern one states that the properties vary with atomic number, not weight. Elements in Mendeleev's table were arranged in rows called periods. The columns were called groups. Elements of each group had similar properties. The Periodic table can be divided into nine families of elements each having similar properties. The families include: Alkali metals The alkali metals, found in group 1 of the periodic table, are highly reactive metals that do not occur freely in nature. These metals have only one electron in their outer shell. Therefore, they are ready to lose that one electron in ionic bonding with other elements. As with all metals, the alkali metals are malleable, ductile, and are good conductors of heat and electricity. The alkali metals are softer than most other metals.
