Review Article A new concept in environmental and human affairs was introduced with the Brundtland Declaration of 1987: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Implicit in this often-quoted definition is the idea that the natural environment faces stress and overexploitation and will not be able to indefinitely meet escalating human demands. By itself, the Brundtland definition is insufficient. How does one define "needs," as opposed to wants or even excessive luxury? Is a lowering of living standards acceptable? Is barely enough to eat and minimal shelter good enough? What about education and medical care? Does sustainability imply some equity in distribution of goods, or might an increasing gap between rich and poor meet the sustainability test (if environmental and population stability are achieved)? Is ecosystem health important for itself, or only as it sustains humans? Sustainability's subject is the whole earth

Scientists and engineers, most of whom live in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, have increasingly been asked to consider what role they can play in addressing the plight of millions of the world’s poorest residents. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one billion people lack access to clean water, and two billion people have inadequate sanitation. Almost 1.5 billion people, mostly in cities in the developing world, breathe air below the standards that WHO deems acceptable. The citizens of poor countries need preparation for the changes that will accompany technological advances. AAAS activities focus on improving indigenous science and technology capacity, in the belief that such capacity is essential to maintaining progress toward sustainable development. At the same time, AAAS fosters communication and collaboration across all national borders. The Center for Science, Innovation, and Sustainability is part of AAAS's

    Abstract
We report in this paper, the first determination of the isotope ratio (238/235) in an uranium sample by optical emission spectroscopy on a laser-produced plasma at reduced pressure (2.67 Pa). Investigations aimed at developing a new application of laser ablation for analytical isotope control of uranium are presented. Optimized experimental conditions allow one to obtain atomic emission spectra characterized by the narrowest possible line widths of the order of 0.01 nm for the investigated transition UII 424.437 nm. We show the possibility to achieve a relative precision in the range of 5% for an enrichment of 3.5% U. The influence of different relevant plasma parameters on the measured line width is discussed.

Environment Sustainability Key to Sustainable Development
    By Paul Kimumwe
During the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000, 189 Heads of State and Governments pledged to work together to make a better world for all by 2015. On our behalf, they signed the Millennium Declaration, which promised to free men, women and children from the dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty and make the right to development a reality for us all!
To this end, Eight Millennium Development Goals were adopted, committing both the rich and poor countries to work together to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce childe mortality
    Missing link
Unfortunately, the failure to make a linkage of all these eight goals has left gaps and uncoordinated strategies that have undermined the very essence of working for sustainable development.
Dr. Peter Waiswa, the Deputy Director of Iganga District Health Services says that the interrelationship (among all these goals) is so great that it si becoming increasingly importantt to revise our approach to both health promotion and poverty alleviation strategies.
