These points are usually, but not exclusively, associated with positions on the surface of the Earth , and are often used to establish land maps and boundaries for ownership or governmental purposes. In order to accomplish their objective, surveyors use elements of geometry engineering trigonometry mathematics ... physics , and law Surveying has been an essential element in the development of the human environment since the beginning of recorded history (ca. 5000 years ago) and it is a requirement in the planning and execution of nearly every form of construction . Its most familiar modern uses are in the fields of transport building and construction, communications , mapping, and the definition of legal boundaries for land ownership.

    Pennsylvania Surveyors Conference Wrapup
Finally back home, after spending a week on the road for a few meetings around the country, including the NCEES Uniform Procedures and Legislative Guidelines committee meeting, to which I was recently appointed, to discuss the 5-year review of the NCEES Model Law and Rules and other associated charges, and a couple of days at the Pennsylvania Surveyors Conference
Amazingly, during the course of one week, US Airways managed to lose one of my bags not once, but twice, on my way down to Florida and then on the way back. The bag did finally show up, but not after it took me a few trips to the store to restock on a few sundries, and not without finally arriving with a trashed wheel.

Some people just do not know how to have fun. They think everything has to be useful. Luckily, the sine, cosine, and tangent functions do have a lot of real-world uses. Surveyors use the tangent function a lot. For example, they can use trigonometry to figure out the distance across rivers. The tangent of 31 degrees is about 0.60. That means that the distance across the river is 0.6 times 400 meters, or 240 meters. Real world alert! Index

    • About 7 out of 10 jobs were in architectural, engineering, and related services. Opportunities will be best for surveyors, cartographers, and photogrammetrists who have a bachelor’s degree and strong technical skills. Overall employment of surveyors, cartographers, photogrammetrists, and surveying technicians is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Surveyors, cartographers, and photogrammetrists are responsible for measuring and mapping the Earth’s surface. Surveyors establish official land, airspace, and water boundaries. They write descriptions of land for deeds, leases, and other legal documents; define airspace for airports; and take measurements of construction and mineral sites. Other surveyors provide data about the shape, contour, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features.

    Surveying Engineering Degree Program
Surveying is the science of measuring the physical features of the earth using specialized equipment and procedures to obtain highly accurate results. Surveyors perform boundary and engineering-related surveys to prepare maps, plots, and plans depicting topography. They also verify the location of existing or planned surface or sub-surface features in relation to the existing survey control. Using high-precision optical and electromechanical instruments and global positioning data from satellites, surveyors are responsible for interpreting the information and formulating conclusions. Career opportunities are excellent. Jobs are mostly in private surveying/engineering consulting firms but graduates are also employed by state and federal agencies.
