Some are exquisite, others monstrous, but all are quick-change artists that can alter their appearance in a flash.
Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt.
It was a wild night in Mexico's Gulf of California. Illuminated by powerful lights from small fishing boats, the water thrashed with squid so big that my jaw dropped in astonishment when I first saw them. Some were as large as a man, with bodies nearly six feet (two meters) long and weighing 150 pounds (70 kilograms). In more than 30 years of studying squid I had never seen any as big as these.
Mention fearsome squid and people usually think of the giant squid, the elusive sea monster of sailors' tales and television documentaries. But squid families include 280 other species, from the monstrous to the minute in size, ranging all the world's oceans. For nearly four months Brian and I immersed ourselves in their element, diving in waters from Cape Cod to Venezuela to California.

superconducting quantum interference device
RSS FEEDS: Word of the Day
- A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a mechanism used to measure extremely weak signals, such as subtle changes in the human body's electromagnetic energy field. Using a device called a Josephson junction , a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductor s, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electron s can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition : each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubit s (that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing ). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing.

This (and the CLOSEME keyword for the redir file) has been included in the latest version of squid-redir.
    UPDATE 1998-08-04
Please note that there is a much newer and better version of this script available. i've been using this "new" version for over a year...I just haven't got around to fixing up this page yet. One of these days i'll update this page properly to reflect the new version. In the meantime, you can view the README or download squid-redir.tar.gz (only 4KB). you can view the perl code and my latest redir rules file before you download. BTW, feel free to email me and give me any good banner blocking regexps you come up with. i don't want to set up any automated system for sharing regexps (that would be too easy to abuse), but i'm willing to share/swap redir files. An increasing number of web sites have advertising banners embedded in them. At first, these banners were fairly unobtrusive and didn't bother me much at all - in fact, every once in a while i'd see something i was actually interested in.

    Squid Development Projects
Welcome to devel.squid-cache.org (aka squid.sourceforge.net). The purpose of this site is to boost and open up Squid development for features not yet ready to be merged into the main Squid source tree. Anyone interested in developing some feature in Squid are welcome to host their development here for sharing with other Squid developers. If you are interested in developing a feature for Squid, please write an description of what you are interested in doing and send this to squid-dev@squid-cache.org, and you will receive instructions on how to proceed. Please note that everything found here unless otherwise announced is development branches with no guarantee of functionality or performance. Almost all the branches is very unstable as they in most cases are not yet finished and also have received very little testing. If your are looking for a STABLE Squid version, or want to test the bleeding edge version of Squid then please look at the main Squid site instead. The development version found there has most finished projects found here in an integrated and somewhat tested form suitable for testing. If you want to take active part in the development of a Squid feature while it is being actively developed or have been told by the developers than one of these branches is suitable for you then this site is for you and you may continue.

    Introduction to Cephalopods

Many cephalopods, the group in which scientists classify octopuses, squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses, can change color faster than a chameleon. They can also change texture and body shape, and, and if those camouflage techniques don't work, they can still "disappear" in a cloud of ink, which they use as a smoke-screen or decoy. Cephalopods are also fascinating because they have three hearts that pump blue blood, they're jet powered, and they're found in all oceans of the world, from the tropics to the poles, the intertidal to the abyss. Cephalopods have inspired legends and stories throughout history and are thought to be the most intelligent of the invertebrates. Some cephalopod species can squeeze through the tiniest of cracks. They have eyes and other senses that rival those of humans. Cephalopods can do all these things and more.
