Revising NASA's Vision for Space Exploration: Keeping Our Eyes on the Prize [Wednesday, January 23, 2008]
The legacy we all should be thinking about leaving behind as we dabble in alternate visions must be how vibrant the notion of a "vision" for space exploration is. This site is no longer being updated. Please visit the new Science Mission Directorate website NASA transformed its organization in the summer of 2004, uniting the former Earth and Space Science Enterprises. The Science Mission Directorate will carry out the scientific exploration of the Earth, Moon, Mars and beyond; chart the best route of discovery; and reap the benefits of Earth and space exploration for society. A combined organization is best able to establish an understanding of the Earth, other planets and their evolution, bring the lessons of our study of Earth to the exploration of the Solar System, and to assure the discoveries made here will enhance our work there. Thousands of years ago, on a small rocky planet orbiting a modest star in an ordinary spiral galaxy, our remote ancestors looked up and wondered about their place between Earth and sky. Today, we ask the same profound questions:
  • How did the universe begin and evolve?
  • How did we get here?

The NASA Space Shuttle Earth Observations Photography database of images is a national treasure. We are publishing these selected photos and related captions on the Internet to provide a glimpse of this national treasure to the public. This database was compiled by our staff to illustrate some very interesting Earth features and processes, including cities as seen by our Astronauts from space. Earth from Space provides several ways to search the selected images. Each image is available in three resolutions and includes cataloging data and a caption. However, this site contains only a small selection of the best of our Earth photography. The complete database of NASA's Earth imagery is available at the Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth , which contains 747,704 images (count updated 1/1/2008) The information contained in this collection is for informational purposes only and does not constitute official NASA positions or statements. We plan to update the database as new information becomes available.
