i.Sound and i.Sound 4X Speakers
Editor's rating (1-5):
Discuss this product
Review posted May, 2006 by Jacob Spindel, Chief iPod Correspondent I'd Like to Buy a Vowel Lately, it seems like any electronics product whose name starts with an "i" automatically has its coolness factor increased by at least 15% over a comparable product whose name doesn't. This appears to be a major marketing point for the i.Sound and i.Sound 4X by DreamGear, which is why it seems a bit "iRonic" that they are probably best-suited for non-iPod devices. DreamGear: It's Not a Game Gear Emulator for DreamCast The i.Sound is an almost cylindrically shaped compact product, and it is only about six inches long when collapsed. A 32 mm, 3W speaker pulls out of each end to provide stereo sound when in use, and although the speakers are magnetically shielded, they do not appear to have any physical protection or "grille," meaning that you could easily touch the speakers' internals with your fingers, even by accident. Although I did not experience any problems during testing, this seems like it could compromise the device's durability significantly. At the top of the i.Sound, there is a "control panel"-type area with a power button, a virtual 3-D surround sound effect button, a bass button, and a volume dial. I liked that it came with an AC adaptor and a carrying case. I wasn't as thrilled when I saw that, although a battery attachment is included, it requires four AA batteries and has no built-in power storage or charging ability.

Below 100 Hz, the data collected in Meyer Sound's anechoic chamber has not been sufficiently accurate to give good results in MAPP Online. Comparison of the Directional Point Source Model and BEM Model for Arrayed Loudspeakers (PDF)
There are many approximations to the Acoustic wave equation which can be evaluated numerically which are more and less accurate at modeling different acoustical phenomena and which are more or less computationally expensive. This paper compares the Directional Point Source model and the Boundary Element Method (BEM) for modeling arrayed loudspeakers.

Hertz So Good: a beginner's guide to audio production for video
by Carma Livingstone Hey now. Don't let it get you down. By this time you are used to painful and heartbreaking obstacles in the making of videos. Overcoming these challenges is what makes the whole thing worthwhile. N'est-ce pas? And there are few simple things you can do to capture sound cheaply, efficiently and eloquently. Sound on the Scene Here's the simple truth: the closer your microphone is to the sound source you want to capture, the better that recording will be. I know what you're saying: "Well, duh." But this simple truth is quickly sacrificed when you are out there doing your creative thing. I know. I know. It's tricky in videomaking for a couple of reasons. If you are using your camera's onboard mic, the desired location of the camera does not always match proximity to the sound source. If you are using an extra mic with your camera, you may not want it to appear in the shot. Here are some solutions: 1. Check the area for ambient noise. Close your eyes and determine what extra sound present. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off. Get as clean a sound environment as possible.

Garfield Blvd. Chicago IL 60614 Chicago IL 60621 (312) 327-8671 (312) 535-9025 Objectives : This lesson is designed for grade levels 1 - 3. 1. To understand that sound is caused by vibration. 2. To understand that sound travels through solids, liquids and gases. 3. To understand that high pitched sounds are caused by more vibrations and low pitched sounds are caused by fewer vibrations. Materials Needed : plastic ruler(s), tuning forks of 2 or 3 different pitches, ping-pong ball attached to a string with tape, boom-box-type radio, balloon filled with air, paper plate, tiny pieces of torn paper, baggie filled with water, scissors, several glass bottles of the same size, large container for water, styrofoam cups, wire coat hangers, string (different types), wire cutters, pencils (with wooden ball attached to the eraser end if possible), stopwatch, flower pots of varying sizes attached to rope, long tubes of PVC pipe cut to different lengths for different tones, xylophone, plastic straws, tape. Strategy Performance Assessment Conclusions : The shorter the tube (or straw, or xylophone key or amount of water in the bottle) the higher the pitch. The longer the tube, the lower the pitch. Pitch, (high and low) is caused by the frequency, or number, of vibrations per time. More vibrations per time ("bigger" frequency) = higher pitch; fewer vibrations per time ("smaller" frequency) = lower pitch.
