BACK TO NPARL CLICK HERE... Soil, is made from rocks that break apart or wear away over many years. This is referred to as weathering. It may take 100 to 1,000 years for 1 cm of soil to form through weathering. Soil also contains air, water, and humus, the decayed remains of dead animals and plants. Soil can actually be separated into 5 main parts. They are:
  • Humus: A dark, moist soil composed of bits of dead, rotting insects, animals, leaves, roots, sticks, and food. Humus adds nutrients to the soil which plants need to grow and live. Clay: A soil that holds water. When wet, clay feels slippery and slimy. It is made of particles that are smaller than 0.004 millimeters. Silt: Soil that looks like fine grains or tiny pieces of rock. Particles classified as silt measure from 0.004 millimeters to 0.006 millimeters. Sand: Soil that is coarse and drains quickly. Sand particles measure from about 0.006 millimeters to 2.00 millimeters.

SOIL
TO MAIN MENU Note: This page was developed from information found in a USDA, Soil Conservation Service (Now, Natural Resources Conservation Service) publication, "Conserving Soil", out of print. S oil !!! Some call it dirt. But it is..... S oil !!! The essence of our being. The medium in which crops are grown to feed humans, as well as animals. One of our natural resources ( soil, water, air, plant, animal Soil by volume, on the average consists of mineral, water, air and organic matter (both living and dead organisms). There are thousands of different soils throughout the world. Five important factors influences the specific soil that develops.
  • Parent Material
  • Minerals and organic materials present during it's formation. Materials from volcanos, sediment transported by wind, water or glaciers or minerals left behind by drying lakes are good examples of parent materials.
  • Climate
  • Parent material is broken down into smaller pieces by a process called weathering. Cycles of freezing and thawing, wetting and drying, and the frequency of these occurrences coupled with average temperature and moisture levels of region play an important role in soil formation. These smaller pieces are known as (sand, silt and clay), clay being the smallest size.
  • Living Organisms
  • Both plants and animals help to create a soil. As they die, organic matter incorporates with the weathered parent material and becomes part of the soil.

Soil is a Complex System of Minerals, Gas, Water, Organisms, and More
    By Matt Rosenberg , About.com
    Filed In:
  • Physical Geography
  • The soil that lies across our plains and fields is a complex environment of minerals, organic material, water, gasses, and living organisms. Soil allows plants to grow, supporting life on our planet. Soil depth worldwide averages a mere six inches (fifteen centimeters). Soil and its underlying layers are classified into layers known as "horizons." From the surface to the bedrock, these layers are:
    • O Horizon - The top layer of soil, composed primarily of organic material, such as the litter of leaves and plants, insects, and microorganisms.

    Soil Taxonomy
In 1975, Soil Taxonomy was published by the United States Department of Agriculture's Soil Survey Staff. This system for classifying soils has undergone numerous changes since that time, and the 2nd edition was published in 1999. Soil Taxonomy remains one of the most widely used soil classification systems in the world.
At the highest level, Soil Taxonomy places soils in one of 12 categories known as orders. We have put together a collection of information and images to illustrate the distribution, properties, ecological significance, and use of these 12 soil orders.

Document Actions While soils are as essential to human society as air and water, soil degradation has not received nearly as much attention as the threats to these other two elements. Still soils are the basis for 90% of all human food, livestock feed, fibre, and fuel. They support human settlements and provide raw materials and groundwater. Major problems in Europe include: loss of top-soil due to erosion or building activities, contamination, and acidification. Lack of attention to soil degradation can be seen not only in the lack of European directives or soil protection targets, but also in the scarcity of data. While, for instance, 300,000 sites across the EU have been identified as definitely or potentially contaminated, the best estimate is that there are 1.5 million contaminated areas.

    http://www.geography4kids.com/files/land_soil.html
    COVERING THE LITHOSPHERE
Although soil has many uses, it is really just a layer of dirt between the atmosphere and the bedrock in the tectonic plates . The top layer of the planet is called the lithosphere . Soil is the loose stuff on the surface of the lithosphere. We have talked about plate tectonics and swirling clouds in the atmosphere. In the same way those conditions change, the soil changes. It changes very slowly but very definitely. It's a very complex system that supports all of the life on land.
    MORE THAN DIRT
Soil is much more than just dirt. It is the result of the breakdown of rocks. The breakdown is both physical and chemical. Soil is mainly something scientists call regolith . Regolith is sandwiched between the bedrock (the rock that makes up the continents) and the actual loose soil (the top stuff at the surface). If you see a tree you know its roots make it into the soil. They could even go all the way to the regolith and stop when they get to the bedrock.
    FROM HERE TO THERE
As the process of erosion happens, some areas are built up and some areas are destroyed. The first thing to change is the soil. One extreme example would be the Grand Canyon. Over millions of years, the Colorado River has eroded and washed away tons of soil and rocks at the surface. It all went to the ocean eventually. Inland processes work the same way. The soil and rocks from the sides of a mountain move downhill and collect in the lower areas. Slowly the valleys fill up with very rich soil and minerals. Soil is always moving.

The Soil Liquefaction web site was developed to provide general information for interested lay persons, and more detailed information for engineers. Visitors who are not familiar with soil liquefaction can find answer to typical questions below.
    What
is soil liquefaction? When has soil liquefaction occurred in the past? Where does soil liquefaction commonly occur? Why does soil liquefaction occur? How can soil liquefaction hazards be reduced? Research - links to sites on soil liquefaction research. Links to sites with earthquake and soil liquefaction information. Content - an overview of the soil liquefaction web site.
The site is organized so that visitors can navigate by viewing the answers to each of these questions. Clicking on the blue dots will provide answers at a level that does not require a background in engineering. More detailed information, presented at a level that does require an engineering background, can be obtained by following the links labeled "More" at the end of each section. Most of the photos on the site can be viewed in a larger version by clicking on the photos.

The Soil Ecology Society (SES) is an international organization of researchers, students, environmental professionals and others interested in the advancement and promotion of soil biology and ecology. The SES holds a bi-annual conference which addresses contemporary issues in the field of soil ecology, and which provides a forum for ecologists, soil scientists, and members of related disciplines, to present original research results, participate in meeting symposia and workshops, and identify priorities for future research. The proceedings of these conferences are often published as books or as special journal issues. Comments on this page? Contact
