We organize as a society in the hope of avoiding conflict and chaos - but often society seems to cause as many problems as it solves! What forces give rise to both good and bad in our lives together? How do social forces affect our personal lives? Is society doomed, or can we act on society's problems? Courses in sociology will give you the knowledge and skills to understand how society shapes your life - and how you can shape society. Faculty and Staff Sociology faculty are committed to offering students a first-rate education... Social Science Disciplines
Sociology W elcome to the Department of Sociology at the Maxwell school of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Sociology at Syracuse includes an exciting group of scholars interested in inequality studies, qualitative and quantitative methods, health, aging, and social policy, and feminist thought. Students are encouraged to work with faculty members not just in the sociology department, but throughout the University. Many students have taken courses in African American Studies, Education, Women's Studies, Anthropology, and Public Administration in the past. Undergraduates majoring in Sociology can expect to gain a broad understanding of how societies (and American society in particular) operate, and more in-depth understanding of particular institutions, (e.g., health care, labor and industry, popular culture), and issues (e.g., environment, sex and gender, racism, globalization). This knowledge provides a useful background for students pursuing a wide range of careers including social services, marketing and retail, personnel, education and law. Graduate training is organized around the major areas of Qualitative Methods and Feminist Methods, Inequality Studies, and Health, Aging and Social Policy. Our aim is to prepare students for all aspects of their career: research, teaching, publishing, grants, and mentoring. We begin with professional development seminar that assures that all students have the opportunities they need to become fully prepared future scholars.
