Welcome to the Department of Sociology at the University of Akron. Presently, we are a dynamic and productive community of faculty staff and students . At the undergraduate level, we offer two baccalaureate degrees: sociology and sociology/criminology and law enforcement. Approximately 60 percent of our 500 active majors are in criminology and law enforcement. In addition to graduate study in sociology and law school, our graduates have secured careers as Federal agents (e.g. U.S. Secret Service, the FBI), marketing, sales, public administration, community development, and health care. At the graduate level, both faculty and students specialize in four areas: criminology/deviance; inequality; medical sociology/mental health, and social psychology. Our research covers, among others, such topics as immigration; homicide; emotional labor; the life course, alcoholism and drug abuse; interpersonal and family violence; race; gender; organizational deviance; work and mental health. Our M.A. and Ph.D. graduates work in the public and private sector, along with teaching at universities and colleges throughout the country. Please look through our web page to learn more about the department. I encourage prospective undergraduate and graduate students to e-mail or visit.

Sociology at ISU began in 1880 when A.S. Welch taught one of the first courses in the United States with sociological content. Since the early days of the department we have been guided by a vision to create and disseminate knowledge that advances the well being of all people, especially the people of Iowa. To this end the Department seeks to: prepare students to lead fulfilling careers and lives through critical thinking and analysis of pressing issues; conduct exemplary basic and applied sociological and interdisciplinary scholarship; and communicate knowledge via high quality professional venues and through excellence in service, teaching and outreach.
We offer 44 undergraduate courses, leading to the BA/BS in Sociology or a Interdisciplinary Studies Major (Criminology and Criminal Justice) or an interdisciplinary program in Public Service and Administration in agriculture (PSA). Currently the Department has over 400 undergraduate majors. The fifty plus graduate students in the program are working towards either a MS or PhD in sociology or rural sociology. We work very hard to ensure that our graduate students receive teaching and research experiences to become leading sociologists in their workplace. We hope you enjoy your visit to our new webpage.

Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Sociology at Florida State University! We’re a thriving department dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Next year2008marks the 90th year since our department was founded at the Florida State College for Women! We’ve come a long way, and now rank among the top 25 sociology departments at public universities in the United States. Our Health and Aging program was recently ranked as among the top 10 in the nation. We have assembled a world-class faculty who are publishing cutting-edge research. Our students graduate with state-of-the-art training in methods, statistics, and important areas of specialization. Florida State is on the move! We offer three academic degrees: Bachelor of Science/Arts, Applied Masters in Social Science, and Ph. D. (with a traditional M. S. degree). Our four major areas of specialization are Health and Aging, Social Demography, Inequality, and Social Psychology. Our faculty have obtained numerous external grants, are publishing in top-ranked journals, and have received a number of national awards for their research and contributions to the discipline. They also serve on the committees of national and regional associations and on the editorial boards of leading journals. Our graduate teaching assistants and faculty have a distinguished record of awards for excellent teaching and mentoring. Many of our graduates have gone on to teach and conduct research at prominent universities.

T he Department of Sociology at the University of Virginia is committed to a program of research and teaching that is both firmly grounded in the classical tradition of the discipline and addressed to contemporary issues. The Department’s intellectual distinction is based on work that is macro-sociological, theoretically driven, and empirically grounded. To take some representative examples, current scholarship includes analyses of the culture wars, the major trends of the century, stratification systems in American high schools, consequences of welfare reform, the rebirth of nationalism, the meaning and effects of marriage, scientific networks, and organizational change efforts. While theoretically varied, our work is fully empirical and draws on a broad array of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Members of the Department are also committed to the enhancement of interdisciplinary approaches. NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS The Sociology Department is sad to announce the death of

last updated Welcome to the Department of Sociology's website. Here you will find information on our people and programs. Department members are actively engaged in research in sociology and criminology while maintaining a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education.
Historically, comparative sociology (often focusing on Latin America) and criminology have been major strengths of the Department. This is still the case, but Department interests are also wider ranging: gender, work and organizations, social movements, race and ethnicity, the Southwest, medical sociology, and social welfare are areas of great faculty and student interest. A variety of other areas are represented among our faculty and students as well. The Department offers graduate (MA and PhD) degrees in sociology, undergraduate (BA) degrees in sociology and criminology, and an undergraduate minor in social welfare. Please use the links at left to learn more about our faculty and our graduate and undergraduate degree programs. For general comments or questions, please write to

Emphasizing a variety of approaches to interpretation and research, the Department of Sociology provides diverse opportunities for both master's and doctoral study. Students combine study of major sociological texts with exploration of topics that speak to the major questions of our times, including the development of cyberspace and the network society; the rise of new cultural forms; the articulations of race, class, and ethnicity in cities and nations; the role of religion and ideals in social and political life; the relations between citizens, constitutions, and rule of law; and democracy, civil society, and the public sphere.
To encourage this engaged and interdisciplinary intellectual work, the faculty offers courses and projects developed in tandem with several other programs and departments at The New School. In addition to working closely with the faculty and staff of the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies, Liberal Studies, and the Departments of Political Science and Philosophy, the department offers a joint degree in sociology and history (with the school's Committee on Historical Studies) and in sociology and media (with the Media Studies Program of The New School for General Studies).

The department participates in several graduate joint degree programs. These include recently developed joint Ph.D. programs in Sociology and Social Policy with the nationally known Florence Heller Graduate School for Advanced Studies in Social Welfare at Brandeis, and in Sociology and Near Eastern and Judaic Studies. We also have a joint MA program with Women's and Gender Studies . On the undergraduate level, the department participates in numerous interdisciplinary programs including Women's and Gender Studies; Health: Science, Society and Policy; International and Global Studies; Peace Studies; Legal Studies; and Latin American Studies. Currently our community has 11 faculty members, approximately 12-16 graduate students in residence (first three years of graduate school), another 25-30 or so who are post-residence, and about 175 undergraduate concentrators. The department is located in its own building on the Brandeis campus, Pearlman Hall. We encourage students and faculty alike to combine rigorous intellectual analysis with collaborative learning and social engagement in the context of building a culture based on mutual respect and shared public work within and beyond the walls of the department and the university.

@import url(/undohtml.css); @import url(/style.css); Vassar broke ground with its approach to teaching sociology, which begins with an introduction to the classical thinkers in sociology in the context of contemporary materials. Students then go on to study a broad range of sociological issues through courses in criminology, media, medicine, science, race, gender, urbanism, research, and theory. Most students integrate field work into their programs of study and participate in a variety of projects in the local community and New York City, including work in prisons, homeless shelters, social service agencies, advertising agencies, and urban planning departments. A senior thesis, written under the direction of a faculty member, is also required. Vassar Home Departments
