Global Sociology at Stony Brook University
Our Department provides graduate training in sociology that is informed by a global perspective. Whether a sociological question addresses individual-level processes, ideas, or organizations, there are often global influences and implications connected to that phenomenon. Students pursuing an advanced degree in sociology will have opportunities to focus on global sociology and to learn how sociological methods and theories can be applied to the study of global social, cultural, political, and economic processes. Faculty research projects, conferences, seminars, and colloquia sponsored by the Sociology Department provide numerous opportunities for students to actively engage in research, dialogues and debates relevant to the study of social systems in a world characterized by increasing global interaction.

Welcome
Notre Dame Sociologists are engaged in innovative research on a wide range of topics. Our faculty members have published influential books and numerous ground-breaking articles in academic journals. In fact, a recent study shows that Notre Dame Sociology ranks fifth in the nation when it comes to placing articles in the discipline's top three journals. The Department is particularly strong in the sociology of education, sociology of religion, marriage and family, social movements, political sociology, and cultural sociology. However, research in the Department cuts across sub-disciplinary and disciplinary boundaries.

    Sociology at Arizona
The Department of Sociology at the University of Arizona offers advanced degree programs designed to prepare students for careers in research and teaching. The Department is widely recognized as one of the top graduate departments in the country. Our faculty includes senior members who are nationally and internationally recognized authorities in their fields, and junior members who are among the best of the young scholars to have obtained Ph.D.'s in recent years. The most distinctive feature of our department is the strong sense of community that is at the heart of our intellectual life. Although faculty and students typically specialize in subareas, the department has consciously worked to create an environment that transcends our different areas and perspectives. Intellectually, this means we encourage work that bridges and combines different theoretical or substantive interests. Interpersonally, it produces a very supportive and collegial atmosphere. Our vitality as a community is most evident in our highly successful brown-bag colloquium series. Every Friday noon the entire department comes together to share lunch and intellectual discussion. With a department of approximately 20 faculty members and 50 graduate students in residence, we combine the best features of larger and smaller departments. On the one hand, we are large enough to offer training in a wide range of substantive areas in sociology. This is a particular advantage for students who are uncertain about their specific interests at the time they enter the program. At the same time, we are small enough to foster close relation between faculty and students. Our faculty are very accessible to students and the level of interaction between faculty and students is high. A large number of our faculty are now in their most productive research years, and many actively involve students in their projects. Faculty support students on funded projects and frequently co-author papers with students.
