A Map Through the Maze of Research Methods
"Boy, if you're an immigrant, you'd better hope your case never makes it to the Supreme Court." Anna Law never forgot this remark by her boss at the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform. Ultimately, it led her to registering for Ph.D. studies in U.S. immigration policy. But despite her dedication to the topic, Law found that the rigors of doctoral research presented some surprising methodological challenges, as recounted in this article and audio interview.

  • About 41 percent of these workers are employed by governments, mostly by the Federal Government. The educational attainment of social scientists is among the highest of all occupations, with most positions requiring a master’s or Ph.D. degree. Overall employment is projected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations, but varies by specialty. Job seekers may face competition, and those with higher educational attainment will have the best prospects.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The major social science occupations covered in this statement are anthropologists, archaeologists, geographers, historians, political scientists, and sociologists. ( Economists market and survey researchers psychologists , and urban and regional planners are covered elsewhere in the Handbook Anthropologists Archaeologists examine and recover material evidence including the ruins of buildings, tools, pottery, and other objects remaining from past human cultures in order to determine the history, customs, and living habits of earlier civilizations. With continued technological advances making it increasingly possible to detect the presence of underground anomalies without digging archaeologists will be able to better target excavation sites. Another technological advancement is the use of geographic information systems (GIS) for tasks such as analyzing how environmental factors near a site may have affected the development of a society. Most anthropologists and archaeologists specialize in a particular region of the world.

This means you won't have to map a new drive to access a Linux project from Windows if you're logging into the SSCC's PRIMO domain. Old mappings will still work, but the V: drive is now the preferred method.

PROGRAMS FELLOWSHIPS SSRC GLOBAL PUBLICATIONS ... SITE MAP SEARCH: Program Areas
Work at the SSRC is focused on four program areas: Global Security and Cooperation; Migration; Knowledge Institutions; and the Public Sphere. These program areas support working groups, conferences, and fellowships, and a wide range of other research activities.
Global Security and Cooperation
: The SSRC has a long-standing commitment to developing better understanding of problems of global security and cooperation, from work on arms control and nuclear proliferation, to emerging social, political, and religious movements, global public health challenges, and persistent forms of conflict and threats to human security. Migration : International migration is at historically high levels. Enormous movements of people are changing the demographic composition of host and sending societies, with profound implications for economic, cultural and political life. The SSRC organizes and sponsors research on migration that focuses both on the experiences of individual nations and localities and on the comparative and collaborative dimensions of immigration across nations and regions. Knowledge Institutions : Technological, social, political, and economic conditions are changing the production of knowledge in contemporary societies. Traditional institutions of science and education are being transformed and new ones created. The Knowledge Institutions Program Area works to understand these shifts and their implications. It affirms a commitment to rigorous social science that can inform public and private sectors on topics related to mounting challenges in public higher education, changing models of undergraduate and graduate training, new practices of scientific research, and emerging partnerships in K-12 education.
