Dalhousie’s Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology offers a unique program of research and teaching that is interdisciplinary, comparative, and critically engaged. We draw on the strengths of our two disciplines–sociology and social anthropology–by recognizing both their distinct intellectual and methodological heritages, while emphasizing how they complement each other. We also share a strong commitment to critical scholarship that is engaged with real world issues of power and inequality in their diverse local and global manifestations. We believe that sociology and social anthropology can make both academic and practical contributions. Many of our faculty work with government and non-government agencies and community groups, providing social analysis and expertise, while retaining their scholarly independence, critical edge and ability to contextualize problems. MA Social Anthropology
The MA in Social Anthropology provides a theoretical and empirical understanding of issues and debates in social anthropology and offers the chance to carry out a piece of original or library-based research.  It is offered by the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology and allows for the opportunity to explore the relationship between anthropology and cognate disciplines. Students are introduced to contemporary issues and debates, foundational studies, and research methods in ethnography and anthropology.  The principal aim of the programme is to equip students to understand and interpret human social behaviour, as studied by social anthropologists, and to become practitioners as well as analysts within the field of social anthropology. The course will develop students' interest in and knowledge of human social behaviours, and to appreciate the interconnections between different aspects of social and cultrual life (e.g. religion, politics, kinship, material culture, and so on).  The programme uses case studies as well as theoretical and methodological analyses. The MA is designed both as a conversion course for students from other disciplines who wish to carry out anthropological research beyond the Masters level, or who wish to gain an appreciation of social anthropology as a subject at postgraduate level, and as an advanced training programme for people with a first degree in social anthropology.

    social/cultural anthropology of agrarian societies
in precolonial western West Africa and pre- and protohistoric Central Europe

    MISSION STATEMENT
The Bremer Stiftung seeks to encourage significant research in the wider discipline of cultural and social anthropology. Due to its limited financial and human resources the foundation presently focuses its funding activities on two fields: precolonial western West Africa and prehistoric Central Europe. Besides funding research within these two fields it is our special concern to promote comparative research between them. And beyond its supportive activities the Bremer Stiftung hopes to stimulate particular approaches and topics of analysis and eventually to develop its own research initiatives.
