Slugs
I love many things.
Slugs are not one of them. This is due to the swift damage they inflict on tiny, tender, or tasty plants: lettuces, lilies, lupins, dahlias, delphiniums, hostas, horseradish and sunflowers. I know they cannot help themselves. They have no shame. You will never see a skinny slug in Cornwall
Even the cat is afraid of them. I had nightmares for a week after hearing that. Just think, if you died suddenly in Death Valley , your body might be eaten by some sort of carrion eating bird or a scorpion or two. But if I pop my socks in my own back garden, with no one finding me for a day or two, it will be the slugs who get me. They are also cannibals. I have heard that if you snip a slug, his mates rush over to finish him off. I have never seen this spectacle myself, but nothing surprises me anymore.
I have resorted to every method known to man to reduce their presence in my garden. I may have won the odd skirmish, but they have won the war.

Treatments
Slugs and Snails are molluscs of the class Gastropoda which literally translated is 'stomach foot'. Gastropods form the second largest class in the animal kingdom, the largest being insects. Most terrestrial snails and slugs belong to the subclass Pulmonata, order Stylommatophora. Of the 29 species in Britain a few are carniverous, but most live on living and decaying plant tissue; usually the the plants we like to look at or eat ourselves!. Instead of a shell like the snails, slugs have an internal horny plate covering their breathing cavity.
This is an example of their destructiveness
these three have hollowed out this swede
and created a snug home There is a range of colours and sizes of slug depending on the species. The Field Slug is 2cm and grey, while the Round Back Slug can be 5-10cm, black or brown and in some cases can have an orange colour on their foot. They feed by rasping ragged holes in flowers, leaves, stems, roots and seeds, with young plants the leaf feeding can kill. Below soil level some species attack root crops - the small Black Keeled Slug being particularly destructive, especially to potatoes and the bases of plant stems. Many species spend most or all of their life underground and those seen are only a small proportion of those present.

Ugh! Slugs! Pesticide-free Solutions to Slug Problems Article in PDF Most people would agree that it's not fun to find slugs in your garden. They have what seems to be an endless appetite for plants you're trying to grow. They're also squishy and slimy. Don't give in to disgust, though, or pesticides. There are effective pesticide- free techniques for dealing with slugs so that they don't get out of control in your garden. What Kind of Slug Is This? Does it Matter? There are about 40 different kinds of slugs living in the U.S., but only about half of them are considered pests. Most of the pest slugs are species that people accidentally brought to this country from other parts of the world.(1) Common pest slugs in the Pacific Northwest include the European black slug, the gray garden slug, and the banded slug.(1-3) Managing the different species of slugs is similar, so you don't need to decide which kind of slug you've got in your garden. Benefits Slugs have important ecological roles. They help cycle organic matter, which in turns helps to build healthy, rich soil.(1) They also are food for wildlife, including raccoons, possums, garter snakes,(1) toads, turtles, and birds.(2) Signs of Slug Damage Slugs are most active at night; often you won't see them in your garden during the day unless it's cool and overcast. You'll see their silvery slime trails, though, and also see damaged plants. They chew large, ragged holes in leaves. They can also eat entire young plants, so that the plants completely disappear.(3)

I know I'm not supposed to, but I pity Michelle Malkin. Really, I do. Punditry is a game of incentives, encouragement, luck. You write a hundred articles before striking paydirt with one. That zeitgeisty dispatch activates an eruption of applause and adulation, so you try to repeat it. Soon enough, you've got a niche, a style, a persona. The lucky ones, among whom I include myself, find their path opening towards responsible, serious commentary. The sort of articles that allow us to wake up, yawn, look in the mirror, and feel good about what we see. And then there are the unlucky ones, the Michelle Malkins, who achieve acceptance through hatred and venom, and find themselves groping down the darkest path to political success. Right now, the dark-haired, lashy, Ann Coulter understudy is happily wrapped in one of her typical controversies: a crew of students at UC Santa Cruz, my alma mater, protested some military recruiters, and Malkin got hold of a press release with their personal contact information a poorly conceived inclusion on the students' part, but then, these are undergraduates, not trained media flacks. Rather than calling and speaking to them herself, which is what members of the press are supposed to use such releases for, Malkin published their personal information on her website, prompting her hordes of orcish mouth-breathers to brandish their pitchforks and inundate the unsuspecting students with death threats (some of which you can read

ScienceDaily (May 3, 2006) See also: The new research is significant because the sea slug known as Tritonia diomedea, a nudibranch mollusc species found in the shallow northeast Pacific, is important in laboratory studies of the how the brain controls behavior, a field known as neuroethology. Biologists Russell Wyeth and Dennis Willows, of University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories, launched the study to help provide missing information on this important research animal. "Tritonia is one of the testing grounds for a lot of ideas for how nervous systems work," says Wyeth. "Field work with this organism is helpful because it gives you a good idea of how to set things up in the lab." Observations of the slug's natural behaviors and the sensory cues that trigger them also add exciting new context for scientists studying them under experimental conditions and provide information that cannot be obtained in laboratories. The study sheds light on the sea slug's navigation, feeding, mating, and egg-laying behavior, and confirms that many of this creature's behaviors in the wild are similar to published descriptions of laboratory behavior. The navigational observations are among the study's most exciting findings, not only because they are new to science, but also because they suggest that sea slugs don't just inch randomly around the sea.

    Summary:
Next time you find a big fat juicy slug in the bathroom don't squash it. Bless its presence, because its there to do your house work. Janet Parker steps into the shower with Martyn Robinson to find out how.
    Details or Transcript:
What did you do when you last came across a live slug in the bathroom? Did you kill it? Then scrub out the bathroom with toxic cleaners to make sure it didn't come back? Well a lot of people would have. But it's time to think again. Relax, step back and get the slugs to help with the housework.
Martyn Robinson is a naturalist at the Australian Museum. He's been assessing the house cleaning potential of the common garden slug and Janet Parker paid him a house call to watch the animals at work.
Janet Parker: We're actually in Martin's bathroom now. It's raining outside and Martin, you actually like slugs don't you? Martyn Robinson: Yes, I think they're a group of molluscs that a lot of people tend to overlook. This one here for example is limax flava. I'm afraid it's got no common name. You could call it the yellow slug though it's mainly grey with a yellow tinge.

Brain slugs are an parasitic, invertebrate species native to the Brain Slug Planet. Brain slugs feed on cognitive energy in the form of the Alpha and Delta brainwaves. They attach themselves to their victims by using their adhesive slime to the scalp. The host's personality becomes totally supressed and their body is controlled by the slug. Brain slugs have a single, rudimentary eye that can only see the heat signatures of their prey, but they gain the use of their host's senses when they begin feeding. The slugs, as a species, are telepathically linked but prone to communicate with one another through their hosts.
Brain slugs are a fairly intelligent race. As primitive life forms they had a hard time establishing a society, but the assimilation of a DOOP survey crew allowed them to work together more effectively. Using their hosts' bodies, they set to work building a city with an important stop-over point on the way to many of the Universe's most popular tourist destinations. The spaceport the brain slugs built was a brilliant ploy to infest countless unknowing visitors on their vacations. The assimilated individuals return to their home planets and attempt to assimilate others by placing other slugs on their heads or convincing them to go to the brain slug homeworld.
The slugs will attack their hosts by crawling up their bodies until they reach the cranium. The only sure way to prevent infestation is to wear a helmet on the Brain Slug homeworld and use a garlic shampoo when in close proximity to an infested individual.

Slugs and snails attack seedlings, roots, tubers and young plants, leaving large jagged holes and sticky deposits mainly on the leaves of herbs and garden vegetables.
Description of Slugs and Snails Slugs and snails are terrestrial molluscs belonging to the Phylum mollusca, which also includes oysters, clams and crustaceans. They belong to the class Gastropoda, characterized by the animal’s foot being attached to its abdomen. Slugs are distinguished from snails in that they have no outer shell, but only a thin internal scale or a few calcareous granulations. Snails have an external shell large enough to enclose the entire animal, enabling them to survive severe conditions of drought and heat. Slugs and snails have a soft, unsegmented body measuring 2 to 4 cm in length. The head bears one or two pairs of tentacles. The front tentacles are sensitive to odours and sometimes taste, while each of the larger back tentacles has an eye at the end. The foot, located on the abdomen, is the organ of locomotion. Slugs and snails are hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female organs.

Slugs and snails can sometimes cause a lot of damage Summary: Slugs and snails can be important pests in the garden and landscape. They are most common in warm and wet climates but snails can be a problem in warm and dry climates as well. These critters feed on plants by shredding tender leaves and flowers. Jack DeAngelis, PhD OSU Ext. Entomologist (ret.) This page will help you get rid of slugs and snails from your garden and landscape. Slugs and snails are terrestrial (land) mollusks , related to clams and shellfish. Snails have an external shell while slugs do not (see pictures below). Both are garden pests in wet climates where they eat plants, especially tender leaves. In the US slug and snails are most important on the west coast and in southern states . Plant damage is usually irregular in shape sometimes accompanied by distinctive "slime trails" that mark where the critters crawled the night before. Outside the garden, slugs and snails actually do beneficial things. They recycle organic matter helping to build soils and they are important prey for other wildlife. Inside the garden and landscape, however, slugs and snails can do considerable damage and often must be controlled. Grey garden slug (about 1/2" long).
