Banana Slugs and European Black Slugs The Banana Slug ( Ariolimax columbianus) and the European Black Slug ( Arion ater ) are two members of the Class Gastropoda found in the Northwest United States. They travel on a muscular foot leaving a trail of slime, which serves several purposes. They have on a dorsal hump, a radula with 27,000 teeth-like structures, and a mantle with a cavity. For a detailed look at a slug's anatomy, go to http://tammyslug.com/love-anatomy.html The Banana Slug can grow up to 12 inches (26 centimeters) and is the world's second largest slug. The European Slug's length may range from 2.8 to 6 inches. The coloration of the Banana Slug may be a bright yellow, slate-green, or white with or without black spots. The European Black Slug, which is not native to the United States, may be black, brown, or reddish in color. This slug can be easily identified by the numerous ridges and grooves on its dorsal side. Home O rganic Pest Index ... Printable Version ORGANIC SLUG AND SNAIL CONTROL © Frances Michaels If overnight newly planted seedlings are disappearing and there are large holes in your plants, the culprits are probably snails or slugs. Usually a close look at the plants will reveal the characteristic silvery trail. Snails and slugs are molluscs and need a moist environment to survive. They avoid the sun and come out mainly at night or on dark, cloudy days. They secrete mucous to move about and by using the same trail and sharing trails with other snails they save on mucous production. During cold or dry weather, snails can seal their shells, and remain dormant for several years. Australia has 6,000 species of native snails, none of which cause problems to garden plants. Some of our native species are carnivorous, feeding on garden snails. The common brown snail Helix aspera is an unwanted arrival from Europe. It can take from 4 months to 2 years to mature and may live 12 years. Snails are hermaphrodite and during the warmer months can lay several egg clusters. The clusters contain up to 100 white eggs, at a soil depth of 20-40 mm.

Controlling Slugs and Snails in Your Garden
March 13, 1999
Ahhhhh! The joys of springtime abound... The new blossoms forming on your perennials, sunshine, longer days,........ slugs!
The slug... your adversary
Slugs may be a very serious problem to you if you live in the Northwest or other moisture laden areas of the country. A single lawn prawn can successfully remove an entire row of seedlings from your garden in no time at all. He can turn a perfect plant into swiss cheese over night and return to the safety of his hideaway, leaving you to wonder what happened...... As slugs wander about, doing their evil little slug deeds, they leave behind them a trail of slime which amounts to nothing less than a road sign for themselves and every other slug to follow to the grand feast. To make the situation even worse, slugs are hermaphrodites, they all have male and female reproductive systems. Yes, they can mate with themselves, and in the privacy of their own abode, each slug will produce two to three dozen eggs several times a year. The egg clusters look like little piles of whitish jelly BB sized balls. They will hatch in anywhere from 10 days to three weeks or longer, and these sluglingss can mature to adulthood in as little as six weeks. Destroy the eggs... wherever you find them.
Slugs may live for several years, getting larger with proportionately larger appetites each year. Now, do you

Information on these slugs, their biology and identification, with a key and illustrations.

common name: slugs (of Florida)
scientific name: (Gastropoda: Pulmonata)
Introduction Biology Identification Key to Slugs of Florida Including Intercepted Species ... Selected References
Introduction
Florida has a depauperate slug fauna, having only three native species which belong to three different families. Eleven species of exotic slugs have been intercepted by USDA and DPI quarantine inspectors, but only one is known to be established. Some of these, such as the gray garden slug ( Deroceras reticulatum Limax maximus L.), and tawny garden slug ( Limax flavus L.), are very destructive garden and greenhouse pests. Therefore, constant vigilance is needed to prevent their establishment. Some veronicellid slugs are becoming more widely distributed (Dundee 1977). The Paraguayan Angustipes Veronicella ameghini (Gambetta) has been found at several Florida localities (Dundee 1974, Gillmore 1982). This velvety black slug should be looked for under boards and debris in vacant lots and cemeteries. Slugs are not commonly seen or collected because they are active mostly at night and inconspicuous during the day. In Spanish, they are called "babosas" from the verb "babear" (to drool), because of the copious amount of mucus they secrete. Slugs should be preserved in 75% isopropyl alcohol. It is best to drown them in water overnight in a covered container without air pockets so the bodies will be extended. After drowning they should be washed under running water to remove excess mucus before placing in preservative. Notes on the color of the mucus secreted by the living slug would be helpful in identification.

Helix aspersa (common garden snail) Characteristics
Slugs and snails belong to a larger group (or Phylum) known as the Mollusca. Molluscs come in many different forms but are predominantly categorised as soft-bodied animals without body segmentation that often have an external shell made of calcareous material. Snails and slugs are known as gastropods, which mean 'stomach foot'. This describes the way in which the body and internal organs of slugs and snails has been twisted back so that the stomach lies above the large fleshy foot of these animals. The head is at one end of this foot the snail or slug moves by gliding along a surface of mucus or slime that is produced from glands on the foot. All gastropods have a well-developed head with eyes and 1-2 pairs of tentacles. Life Cycle
Most gastropods are hermaphrodites , which means that each animal has both male and female reproductive organs in the same body. When two individuals snails or slugs meet they exchange bundles of sperm, usually via a dart into the tissue of the other. Eggs are then usually laid in crevices in the soil or under rocks, while some species may give birth to live young.

Slugs (many species)
Plants affected
A wide range of vegetables and ornamental plants, especially seedlings and other soft growth.
Symptoms
Soft succulent growth, including seedlings, young tender shoots, leaves and flowers are damaged or eaten, particularly in wet conditions. Underground parts of plants, especially potato tubers and tulip bulbs are tunnelled by black keeled slugs ( Milax spp.). Slime trails may be visible near the damaged tissues. See also Snails
Cause
There are about seven species of slugs that are garden pests. They can do damage throughout the year on a wide range of plants, but seedlings and new growth on herbaceous plants in spring are most at risk and may need protection. Most slugs live in or on the soil surface, but keeled slugs ( Milax species) live and feed mostly in the root zone. Slugs vary in size from the smaller Deroceras reticulatum (grey field slug, buff coloured form, right), which is no more than 5cm (2in) long, to

http://www.gardenline.usask.ca/pests/slugs.html
Slugs GardenLine Common Saskatchewan Pests Bonnie Willie Description: Slugs are slimy, rather disgusting creatures that eat plants. Adults vary in colour from almost white to brown, grey and black. They are legless, elongate, mollusks (snails, shellfish, etc.) and prefer to feed at night. They will however feed during the day in moist shady locations. Their movement is highly dependant upon moisture availability. They move by sliding forward on a trail of secreted slime. The slime has a silvery appearance and is often used to detect an infestation. The most common type of outdoor slug in our region is the grey garden slug, Deroceras reticulatus. All slugs are similar in general appearance but vary in colour and length. Slugs will feed on a variety of animal, green plant and fungal materials. Succulent fruit and tender leaves are their preferred hosts but slugs will also feed on root crops such as carrots and potatoes. Slug eggs are very small (less than 3 mm or 1/8 inch in diameter). Eggs are colourless and deposited beneath the soil surface, making them very difficult to detect. Newly hatched slugs are also small and transparent making their presence easily overlooked. Because of this, slug eggs or young slugs can enter the garden on new plants or in soil materials. Transplants, perennial divisions, strawberry plants...etc, whether they are given to you by your neighbour or purchased at a retail outlet, can be responsible for infesting your garden. Even borrowed garden equipment can introduce slug eggs. Slugs, even though considered to be a slow mover, can move unaided from one garden to the next in an urban situation. Eggs, because of their size, can even be transferred on the bottom of footwear when crossing an infested area.

Microsoft slugs Mac users with Vista tax
By John Pospisil
Updated 8 Feb 07: Mac users wanting to run Vista on their Macintosh will have to buy an expensive version of Vista if they want to legally install it on their systems using virtualization technology.* The end-user license agreement for the cheaper versions of Vista (Home Basic and Home Premium) explicitly forbids the use of those versions on virtual machines (ie Macs pretending to be PCs): “You may not use the software installed on the licensed device within a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system,” the end user license agreement states. However, the more expensive Vista Enterprise and Ultimate Editions, can be installed on a virtual machine. From the end user license agreement: Gates and Jobs intensifying in recent weeks , Mac users could be forgiven for thinking that Microsoft is going out of its way to make life difficult. I would really appreciate learning more about what makes up the slime that envelops slugs, or even more about slugs in general. I have handled more than my share of the lovely little beasties, (I have a water turtle that is possessed with a penchant for slug souffl©,) and the residual slime left on my fingers is tougher to scrub off than super glue.
There's a similar depiction (in much better resolution, detail, and color) in the film "Microcosmos" that is just absolutely stunning. It's actually erotic in a really odd sort of way.
And slugs creep me out a bit, so that's saying something.

54. Recipe For Boiled Sea-Slugs
This is a transcript of the George Hunt translation of the seaslug recipe, as narrated in the Kwakuitl Language, by his wife Elie Hunt, circa 1913.

Boiled Sea-Slugs.
(Catching sea-slugs).
When a man wants to take sea-slugs, he first goes for a thin shaft which is used by the salmon fishers. He takes two thin cedar sticks, each one a short span long and a little thinner than the little finger, flat on one side and he takes cedar-bark and splits it in narrow strips. The two cedar-sticks are to be hooks at the end of the sea-slug spear. He puts these near the end of the harpoon-shaft, and ties them on with split long strips of cedar-bark. When it is finished, it is this way: [A simple illustration is omitted, of spear with hook lashed on end]. Then he waits for it to be calm at low tide. When it is calm, he launches his sea-slug-gathering canoe. He takes his sea-slug-gathering paddle, and his knife for cutting off the heads of sea slugs, and also the stick for catching sea-slugs. Then he paddles to a place where he knows there are many sea-slugs. He looks down into the water; and when he sees a place where there are many of them together, he takes his stick for catching sea-slugs and pushes it down into the water. He pushes the hook-end under the sea-slugs. Then it comes up lying crosswise over his canoe. He takes the sea-slug, takes his knife, and cuts off the neck. Then he squeezes out the insides, and he throws it down hard into his canoe, saying as he is throwing it down

Slugs can be very damaging pests in moist, shady gardens. They feed on the leaves of many plants, especially seedlings. Later in the season they can feed on ripening fruits and vegetables. Slugs are especially numerous during rainy seasons and in well-irrigated gardens. If slugs are abundant one year, it does not mean they will be as common the following season; the relative number of slugs in a given season depends on how moist the growing conditions are.
Identification
Slugs are best described as snails without shells. They are a type of mollusk, related to clams and oysters. Slugs are soft bodied, generally brownish or grayish, with eye stalks. They vary in size from 1/4 inch to two inches or longer. Slugs leave a silvery slime trail that they secrete as they move. Slugs use file-like mouthparts to rasp and chew plant tissue. Because of their mouthparts, they create irregularly shaped holes. Feeding damage can be cosmetic, however extensive feeding can result in plant stress or even death.

Experimental studies on the control of slug flow by interfacial forces in silylated glass capillaries
Colloids and Surfaces Volume 55 Pages 257-270
Abstract
The effect of a solid surface on the resistance of a three phase contact line to motion was investigated in silylated, cylindrical and horizontal glass capillaries. The solid surface wetting property was modified by silylation procedures and prewetting with water or dodecane. To compare the calculated and measured values of different pressure drops the linear flow velocity and the dynamic contact angles were measured as a function of the hydrostatic pressure difference (driving force). The wetting heterogeneity of capillary surfaces, caused by water-prewetting and different silylation procedures, was suggested to be responsible for the capillary pressure drop which could not be described by the Laplace term alone.
