The SEO Slugs Wordpress plugin removes common words like 'a', 'the', 'in' from post slugs to improve search engine optimization. For example, when you publish a post with a title like this: "What You Can Do Immediately For Higher Rankings", Wordpress automatically assigns a long filename to your post, called a post slug: /what-you-can-do-immediately-for-higher-rankings SEO Slugs plugin strips common words like "what", "you" or "can" out of your post slug to make it more search engine friendly. With SEO Slugs plugin activated, the slug for our example blog post would look like this: /immediately-higher-rankings The slug is generated on saving a post (so you get a chance to look at it before publishing, and change it), or on publish. It won't overwrite an existing slug. You can force a new slug generation by deleting the existing one.

The gray garden slug, Agriolimax reticulatum (Mollusca), is the most common. This slug is about 6 to 8 mm long and varies in color from gray to brown. All stages of slugs cause injury by rasping the tissues from the leaf surfaces. They can be associated with their injury by the trail of white shinny slime they leave behind. Eggs, which are yellowish-white and about 2 mm in diameter, are laid in clusters under clods, under boards, in weedy areas, or trash. Eggs are laid year around in cool moist conditions, but the majority are laid in late summer or fall before the rains begin. 'PR Newswire' Employee Slugs Release 'Loony-Bin Rally,' Gets Fired
Flackers, a word? You will almost certainly be fired should you use the slug "LOONY-BIN-RALLY" on a press release about a march for mental illness. Yesterday, Philadelphia Daily News columnist Dan Gross reported that a PR Newswire employee had done just that, prompting her dismissal and a pleading correction from the company, which distributes press releases to over 4,000 news aggregators. How did the company stumble across the faux pas? Why, News man Gross called in the tip himself! Filling a regular column is hard. "PR Newswire deeply regrets an error that occurred yesterday in a news release, re-sent below," the correction reads. "PR Newswire understands that such terminology feeds the prejudice and discrimination associated with mental illnesses and will take steps to ensure that nothing like this occurs in the future." Thing is? The original wasn't wrong, per se.

Slugs
Nudibranchs Description

Slugs are mollusks, related to oysters and clams. Slugs are referred to a "naked snails," as they possess no shell. Slugs lay clusters of translucent, pearly-shaped eggs under debris or buried beneath the soil surface. They can lay between 20 to 100 eggs several times per year, taking approximately two years for slugs to reach maturity. The gray garden slug, Peroceras reticulatum , is the slug generally encountered in Illinois. It is approximately 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long, ranging in color from pale yellow, lavender, to purple. In addition, they are covered with black or brown spots and mottling. Less commonly encountered is the great gray garden slug, Limax maximus . It is up to 7 inches long and is yellow-gray to brown with black mottling. Click on image for larger version

They are similar to snails, but have a raised mantle on the back instead of the familiar shell. Slugs overwinter mostly as eggs, but adult slugs can survive Maine winters, if they hide in areas protected from freezing. The gray garden slug is the most common and most destructive. This 3/4 inch pest varies in color from whitish yellow to nearly black, with brown specks and mottling . T he spotted garden or giant slug can range from 3 to 7 inches long. These slugs become lighter in color as they age. The yellowish mantle usually has three rows of black spots that continue to the end of the body. The species is found primarily on islands and along the coast, but it is becoming more common inland. The tawny garden slug seldom reaches 4 inches long. It is usually recognized by its yellow mantle, and lighter spots on a yellow body. This type is less common than the gray garden or spotted garden slugs. The approximately 100 eggs laid by male or female (slugs are hermaphroditic) gray garden slugs are about 1/8 inch in diameter. A 4 inch slug may produce eggs up to a 1/4 inch in diameter. It takes about 100 days for slug eggs to hatch at 32° to 40° F, but only 10 days in warmer weather, as in late May. Under ideal conditions with damp, warm weather, the life cycle of a slug could be as short as three months.

Biology of slugs MORPHOLOGY The body of a slug is very similar to that of a snail, the most obvious difference being the abscence of a shell. This is not entirely true however, slugs still have some form of a shell.Sometimes this is a form of plate, lying below the mantle(Limacidae), in other cases there are chalky granules(Arionidae). The semi-slugs are a sort of intermediates between snails and slugs. They posses shells, but these are too small to house the whole body. Slugs don't have a visceral mass, their organs are situated on top of the foot. Behind the head is the mantle, this has a different size and color pattern in each species, and forms an important identification point. The part behind the mantle to the tail end is the back. This can have a rounded profile(Arionidae) or have a sharp keel(Limacidae). The sides can have a foot fringe(or skirt) where they meet the sole. The color of the sides and the foot fringe is another important identification point. SENSES Like snails slugs have most of their sensory receptors concentrated around the head.Nerve knots, also named ganglia, process information gathered from the two pairs of tentacles. The lower, shorter, pair, the sensory tentacles, is used for smelling and maybe tasting. The upper, longer, pair, the optic tentacles is sensitive to light and smell.Although slugs can't see colors, they are able to distinguish light from dark. There are less than a 100 light sensitive cells present(compare to 4000 in Helix)many pigment cells surround each one.A large number of microvilli(see number 11 on the drawing) are at the upper surface. These are probably the areas sensitive to light. The mouth lobes can tell the difference between different surfaces. When a slug loses one of his tentacles it will grow back. For example with Arion ater this takes 1-2 months. From the head nerves stretch through the rest of the body.To the foot to control locomotion, and to the visceral mass.

In the near future, the very mention of SlugBot could send waves of terror through the slug community, while farmers will sing its praises. A prototype robot capable of hunting down over 100 slugs an hour and using their rotting bodies to generate electricity is being developed by engineers at the University of West England's Intelligent Autonomous Systems Laboratory The SlugBot is an attempt to build the world's first fully autonomous robot. When completed, the SlugBot will be the first robot to work completely independent of human care. It won't even need help to recharge its batteries. "Slugs are slow," said Dr. Ian Kelly, SlugBot's creator. "You can't expect the speeds of a cheetah chasing a zebra. Slugs are small and manageable."

In North Carolina many types of ornamental and vegetable plants are damaged by slugs. Slugs are similar to snails but differ from snails in that they do not have a hard protective spiral shell. There are many species of slugs in this state which vary in appearance and habits.
Size
The size varies from less than one-half inch to more than four inches in length and from one-eight to one-half inches in width.
Color
The color varies from ash-gray or yellowish-gray to black. Some are the same basic color throughout the body; others are mottled. Immature slugs resemble adults but are smaller and usually lighter in color.
Eggs
Eggs are gelatinous and watery in appearance. They range in size from 1/8 inch in diameter to almost 1/4 inch and vary in shape from round to oval. In the colder parts of NC, only the eggs overwinter. Eggs are resistant to summer heat, excessive moisture and prolonged drying. They are laid in clusters of about 25 on the soil surface in concealed moist locations.
Life Cycle
In spring eggs hatch and young slugs appear. They resemble adults but may be lighter in color and smaller. Most slugs become mature and lay eggs in the fall of the first year of their life. If not killed by cold weather, they may live for two or more years. Slugs are active at night. Their silver-colored slime trails are quite noticeable each morning.

http://bio.research.ucsc.edu/grad/weaver/Pages/project.html
Welcome to my project page! What am I studying? I am studying evolutionary biology and I became interested in banana slugs because I feel that they are good organisms to study sexual conflict between hermaphroditic mating partners. My banana slugs are just so damn cute! Below I have a mating video and pictures of slug penises. All part of my PhD thesis... What is sexual conflict? The big picture is that there is often a conflict of interests between mating partners because each individual will differ in how it can maximize it's fitness (ie. how many babies it can make in its lifetime). For example, after a male and female mate, the female may want to mate again because she may benefit from gaining sperm from other males. But, from the point of view of the male that she just mated with, her remating is a very bad thing because that means that she will not fertilize all her eggs with his sperm, but with another male's sperm as well. This is an example of a conflict of interests where the female wants to remate, but the male does not want her to. This is a mating pair. Because their genital opening in near their head, they line up in the yin-yang position and stay like this for hours.

Symondson@cardiff.ac.uk Britain has few serious pests compared with the tropics where all vegetation in a whole region can be wiped out by insects such as locusts. However we do have one pest that can, under certain circumstances, destroy most of our crops. No gardener needs two guesses as to what this is; it has to be the slug.
The Black Slug When allotment holders were asked recently to name the crops that most frequently suffered from pest attacks, brassicas and potatoes headed the list. In both cases slugs were seen as the main pest responsible, and overall they were blamed for causing the most damage to vegetables. In response to this, slug pellets lead the field as the most used pesticides.
    SLUG IDENTIFICATION
To control any pest it is essential to know something about the beast. In this instance identification of the various types of slug is desirable, because not all of them cause problems in the garden. As explained later, overuse of slug poisons can be counter productive in that you risk killing off the predators that are helping to control your slug population. Such poisons should therefore be used, if used at all, only when and where a serious problem is seen to be developing, involving a slug species that is known to attack the crop you are growing. Once you have identified the species and can learn a little about its habits, you might well find that there are non-chemical options that are effective controls.

Banana slugs. We see their stylized faces everywhere in Santa Cruz - on posters, T-shirts, and textbook covers - and that's when we're not confronting them face-to-face in all their gooey splendor. So what are they? Where do they come from? Are your prize begonias in trouble if these slick yellow critters are oozing about in the vicinity? And how do they ... get it on? All good questions. Some of the answers are known, others remain a mystery. What we do know about banana slugs, according to Aptos authority Alice Bryant Harper, is that they belong to the class Gastropoda ("stomach feet"), putting them in with other land slugs, sea slugs, and snails. And they belong to the genus Ariolimax, a group of land slugs that range from the Salinas Valley north to Alaska and east to the Sierra Nevada. The species question is under debate. Some folks think that there is only one, A. columbianus , throughout the range; others claim the presence of a second, A. dolichyphallus
