Sloths And Birds
It's a rainy day, and the last of the leaves are falling. Soaked, they stick flatly to the deck and patio, waiting for drier days to be gathered into piles.
I was feeling a bit under the weather today, so I stayed home wrapped in a blanket and sitting on the couch watching Enterprise reruns on DVD (thanks PJW!). Probably just two long workweeks catching up with me, along with a music project that has been taking up my late nights. (More on that in the next few weeks.)
Normally my workaholic nature is hesitant to see any benefit to laziness and couch sitting, much less extol its virtues. But this morning I was rewarded for my aforementioned slothfulness, with a third visit from my mammoth-winged friend. Fortunately, my camera happened to be within arm's length this time.
Near as I can tell, this is either a Sharp-shinned Hawk or Cooper's Hawk

Scientific Name: Choloepus hoffmanni Description: Sloths are perhaps most famous for their ability to live and carry out many life functions in an upside down manner. Two-toed sloths have two long claws on their fore limbs and three claws on the hind limbs. Weight varies form 4 to 8 kg. Sloths are covered with tan to greyish brown hairs. Apparently, the sloths hair is specially designed to allow algae to effectively colonize. Greenish camouflage is the most obvious advantage although it is a possibility that the sloths may somehow gain nutrition through absorption or consumption of the colony. Activity is nocturnal. Range: Central and South America Habitat: Tropical forests Diet: Primarily vegetation: leaves and fruit Social Life: Although this may vary by area, some grouping of sloths have been reported in ratios of one male to eleven females. Females are also more gregarious and males more solitary so this figure may be skewed. A single young is born following a lengthy gestation in excess of eleven months and clings to the mother. Maturity is reached between three and a half to four years. Lifespan has exceeded thirty years in rare instances. Conservation: This species is listed on CITES but is not currently endangered.

I was first alerted to this phenomenon while working in Liverpool a couple of years ago. Consisting mainly of young women, I would see them queuing for their money outside the local post office wearing nothing but their pyjamas. Now, I have spotted the sloth(s)' at various Wirral locations - Liscard precinct, Grange precinct etc, usually exhaling smoke into the front of a pushchair! advertisement While at Bromborough Retail Park, I saw the best example yet of this unusual trait. Story Tools: E-MAIL PRINT S M ... BOOKMARK PAGE the mystery of the giant sloths cave Today’s sloths rank highly among the most surprising creatures of the animal kingdom: living suspended to the Amazon rainforest’s trees, they move about extremely slowly, as if from a world where time flows differently. Yet, only a few thousand years ago, the Sloths family gathered even more extraordinary members, reaching the size of an elephant and weighing over four tons!
Sloth at sundown Only palaeontology and modern methods of CGI allow us to revive them virtually and to acquaint ourselves with these giants, today extinct. For each of them has got its specific place in the history of the Evolution and of extraordinary animals. The Mystery of the Giant Sloths Cave retells the discovery of an exceptional palaeological deposit that will revolutionize our knowledge of giant sloths. In the heart of Brazil, amidst the sublime setting of the Chapada Diamantina (a natural reserve in the state of Bahia), a diver stumbles upon a few strange bones at the bottom of a flooded cave baptized ‘Poco Azul’ (the blue cave). Driven by his curiosity, he consults with Castor Cartelle, a Brazilian palaeontologist who soon finds himself behind an international scientific expedition, which includes a French paleontologist, François Pujos (Institut français d’Etudes Andines, Lima) and a Canadian one, Gerry De Iuliis (George Brown College, Torontoà.

Choloepus hoffmanni ): SPECIES ACCOUNT
GEOGRAPHIC RANGE
The extinct West Indian sloths lived in the West Indies, in island countries including Haiti. Living two-toed sloth species reside in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.
HABITAT
The earliest West Indian sloths were arboreal, living in trees. Later species lived both on the ground and in trees. Most two-toed sloths live in trees in the rainforest, an area where there is much rain throughout the year. Sloths also range in cloud forests, forests in high altitude areas that are kept moist by the clouds at that height.
DIET
West Indian sloths probably ate leaves. Two-toed sloths are herbivores, eating mostly leaves and twigs. They also eat fruit. Since sloths move from tree to tree, their diet is as varied as the trees they live in.

Two-toed Sloths Choloepus didactylus
Family: Megalonychidae
Sloths are native to the rainforests of South America. They range from Nicaragua, Columbia, Venezuela, the Guianas to north central Brazil and northern Peru. The most successful large mammals of the tropical forest, they are unusual and interesting animals. Sloths certainly live up to their common name – they hold the world's record for the slowest moving land animal.
Sloths are arboreal leaf eaters that spend most of their time hanging upside down from tree branches. In this position they feed, sleep, breed and move around. They seem to have invented the concept of the hammock.
Sloths have extremely coarse hair; mop-like and musty smelling. It is gray to brown in color but usually tinted green due to the presence of algae. Beetles and moths also inhabit their hair. The hair grows backwards, parting down the center of the chest and stomach, ankles and shoulders so rainwater drains away as they hang an adaptation to an upside-down life. Long, curved claws are actually hooks, which lock onto branches making hanging effortless. Movement among the branches and vines of the forest is smooth and agile due to loose wrist and ankle joints. Sloths are also excellent swimmers and can escape from predators by falling into the river.
Sloths are nocturnal and are active only about 7 hours out of each day. Metabolism in these animals is very low, about half that of other similarly sized mammals. Low body temperature and sluggishness conserve energy. Sloths warm up in the morning by sunbathing.

Things To Do Land Activities
About: Costa Rica is home to two species of sloth; the two-toed ( Choloepus hoffmanni ) and the three-toed sloth ( Bradypus variegatus
Normally found sleeping in tree tops during the day, sloths are most active from dusk till dawn. They sleep an average of eighteen hours a day, so it is most common to see them as unmoving furry balls tucked into the crooks of tree branches. Sometimes while relaxing the day away, they hang upside down and scratch, then slowly return to their slightly more upright position to resume their nap. They are well camouflaged, stealthy and usually very still, so they can be hard to spot with out the trained eyes of a naturalist guide.
The Two Species of Sloth:
The general appearance and behavior of the two and three-toed sloths seem very similar at first glance, but the reality is that they are very different both in personality, eating habits and appearance.

Order: Edentata
Family: Choloepidae
Genus: Choloepus
Species: Choloepus didactylus
HABITAT AND RANGE: The two-toed sloth is found in the rainforests of Central America, throughout northern South America, and in the Amazon Basin. They are primarily arboreal, only coming to the ground to defecate, or move to another tree. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: ADAPTATIONS: DIET: Their diet consists of leaves, buds, tender stems, and fruits. A sloth’s metabolic rate is very slow. It is only about 40-45% of that of a comparably-sized terrestrial mammal. It may take up to a month for some of the vegetation to completely digest and pass through their system. Digestion takes place in a compartmentalized stomach containing cellulose digesting bacteria. They defecate about once a week, and in the wild they urinate only when rain can mask their urine stream. REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: Very little is known about the mating rituals and communications between male and female sloths. It is known that the females reach sexual maturity at about 3 years of age while males reach maturity at 4-5 years of age. One offspring is usually born each year after a gestation period of 5-6 months. The newborn is about 10 inches long and weighs about 12 ounces. It clings to its mother until it is about 5 weeks old. Their lifespan ranges from 10-15 year in the wild, and to up to 30 years in captivity

In subdued tones and scientific language, the usual deep baritone of the narrator detailed the often gruesome struggle for life: lions hunting their prey; jackals feasting on their kill. Hours slipped away with nobody even noticing the bowl was cashed. These days, Animal Planet is just a vehicle for "Funniest Home Videos" shows and zany jump-cut malarkey like the Crocodile Hunter. Granted, it's my favorite show, but still, the antics to which these shows resort to hold a kid's attention are downright dizzying. Enter Steven Karlin, executive director of Wildlife Associates. At a presentation for the Museum of Natural History on Saturday, Karlin will bring the real deal to Santa Cruz: an African crested porcupine, an arctic fox, a golden eagle, a baby American alligator and a two-toed sloth. Whether he's presenting at marketing seminars or elementary school assemblies, Karlin uses a decidedly holistic approach to teach people about the natural systems on which all life depends. This weekend, he will arrive in town with a bunch of animals and a two-toed sloth named Hershey
