Jump to: navigation search The Committee for Skeptical Inquiry CSI ), formerly known as the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal CSICOP ) is a U.S. nonprofit organization whose stated purpose is to "encourage the critical investigation of paranormal and fringe-science claims from a responsible, scientific point of view and disseminate factual information about the results of such inquiries to the scientific community and the public." CSI was founded in 1976 by Paul Kurtz to counter what he regarded as an uncritical acceptance of, and support for, paranormal claims by both the media and society in general. Its philosophical position is one of scientific skepticism . CSI's fellows have included many notable scientists, philosophers, educators, authors, and celebrities.

The answer to this question can help us understand our past and prepare for our future. Although evolution provides credible and reliable answers, polls show that many people turn away from science, seeking other explanations with which they are more comfortable. Skeptic Barry Beyerstein, 60, Dies Suddenly
Posted by: Loren Coleman on July 1st, 2007 Barry Lane Beyerstein, a skeptic extraordinair©, was born on May 19, 1947, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In recent years, he called Moody Lake, British Columbia, his home. On Monday, June 25, 2007, one day after the 60th birthday of the beginning of the era of flying saucers just across the border in Washington State, Barry L. Beyerstein, 60, was found dead at his college office desk from a heart attack. Beyerstein, a psychology professor at Simon Frasier University, British Columbia, had become a famous media commentator on several topics from drug and alcohol addiction to social beliefs linked to parapsychology, from satanists to angels. Of interest to us, Beyerstein, as one of the leaders in the Society of B.C. Skeptics, often commented on Sasquatch, Caddy, and Ogopogo to the media. From his detailed notes on who interviewed him on what subjects, Beyerstein listed the following: 1987, October 8 - S. Baker

Skeptical Inquiry
1. What is Skeptical Inquiry?
Skeptical inquiry is a method of investigation which guides the evaluation of claims of fact. Four words neatly summarize the skeptical credo: Prove what you claim! Skepticism's core value judgment holds that empirical evidence must support a falsifiable claim to justify acceptance of that claim. A skeptic strives to identify and clearly articulate assumptions and, when they are questioned, rigorously test those assumptions. Science is the best tool yet-invented for producing evidence that skeptics consider valid.
2. Bases of Evidence
Skeptical inquiry borrows its core bases of evidence, empiricism and falsifiability, from science. A falsifiable claim is stated in a way such that it can be proved false. Examples of falsifiable claims are "It is raining outside" or "The sun will rise tomorrow." On the other hand, "Chocolate is better than vanilla" is not falsifiable. In this essay, the word empirical is used in senses one and three of Merriam-Webster's definition
Biomedical science provides rich fodder for skeptical inquiry, from outright nonsense to quackery (e.g.

Should skeptical inquiry be applied to religion? - Special Issue: Science and Religion: Conflict or Conciliation?
Skeptical Inquirer July-August, 1999 by Paul Kurtz Skeptical inquirers can and should examine religious claims, though the case can be made that CSICOP should not. Scientific Inquiry The relationship between science and religion has engendered heated controversy. This debate has its roots in the historic conflict between the advocates of reason and the disciples of faith. On the current scene, there is a vocal hallelujah chorus singing praises to the mutual harmony and support of these two realms or "magisteria." I have serious misgivings about this alleged rapprochement, but I wish to focus on only one aspect of the controversy, and ask: To what extent should we apply skepticism to religious claims?

    Friends,
Dear John Tindall, I don't think your documentary served either side's argument too well. It was a work of cynicism, not skepticism. The Greek root for the word "skeptic" means "to investigate." Giving both sides equal time to declare their views and respond in rebuttal is skeptical inquiry. When your segment producer, Peter Hankoff, initially contacted me for the interview I suggested that your planned documentary would be a true skeptical inquiry if it follows the four-square process of a fair investigation. That means the pro-Nostradamian makes his statement first; then the anti-Nostradamian responds; then the pro-Nostradamian replies, and the anti-Nostradamian can answer that reply if he deems it necessary. Conversely any declarations made by the anti-Nostradamian passes through the same four-square process. Thus, he declares, I reply, he rebuts to reply, and I respond to his rebuttal if I deem it necessary. The same is the case with your documentary. An opportunity to educate the public about Nostradamus was lost.

    16. A Skeptical Inquiry Into Origins
seem dedicated to promoting it as fact, perhaps because it does away with the uncomfortable idea of a Creator who is not subject to scientific inquiry.
    http://www.rae.org/eddiejoe.html
Biological Evolution and Worldview Why the unending controversy between evolution and creationism? Evolution is backed up by scientific facts, and creationism is religion, right? It should be obvious to anyone with more than a passing acquaintance with either worldview that the issue is not quite that simple. There certainly is a large body of scientific evidence which has been accumulated over the last 130 years or so since the publication of Orgin of Species , and the believers in each worldview quote the evidence as favoring their side. Perhaps you have noticed that the "skeptics" on the internet selectively accept evolution without question and reserve their skepticism for creationism. Why is evolution not also treated with reservations? It is not that it is somehow self-evident to anyone familiar with the evidence, rather, the evidence is inconclusive and can support either viewpoint. Is there not also some room for skepticism about evolution? After all, the arising of all species from primitive, one-celled animals is the dominant paradigm in biology, and is the viewpoint that is taught to practically all students in practically all colleges and universities. Christian colleges are no exception. Where is the rebellion against the establishment viewpoint? Where is the independent thinking that threw off the old Christian wordview?

    • Homeostasis: Regulation of the internal environment to maintain a constant state; for example, sweating to reduce temperature. Organization: Being composed of one or more cells, which are the basic units of life. Metabolism: Consumption of energy by converting nonliving material into cellular components (anabolism) and decomposing organic matter (catabolism). Living things require energy to maintain internal organization (homeostasis) and to produce the other phenomena associated with life. Growth: Maintenance of a higher rate of synthesis than catalysis. A growing organism increases in size in all of its parts, rather than simply accumulating matter. The particular species begins to multiply and expand as the evolution continues to flourish. Response to stimuli: A response can take many forms, from the contraction of a unicellular organism when touched to complex reactions involving all the senses of higher animals. A response is often expressed by motion, for example, the leaves of a plant turning toward the sun or an animal chasing its prey.

    God: The Failed Hypothesis
How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist
In my 2003 book Has Science Found God? I provided a critique of contemporary claims that science supports the existence of God and found them inadequate. In this book, I go much further and argue that science makes a strong case against the existence a God with the traditional attributes of the Judaic-Christian-Islamic God. My argument is not based simply on the gross absence of evidence for this God. Not only is there no evidence for God, I argue that the evidence we have can be used to conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that this God does not exist. Not only does the universe show no evidence for God, it looks exactly as it would be expected to look if there is no God. In a final chapter I show why it is preferable to live in a Godless universe.
