Catalogs Full Repository Repository Applets Repository Components Subject Catalogs Color Theory Viewing Techniques Signal Processing Texture Mapping ... 1D Fast Fourier Transform The Fourier Transform is a powerful tool allowing us to move back and forth between the spatial and frequency domains. Many of our explanations of key aspects of signal processing rely on an understanding of how and why a certain operation is performed in one domain or another. This applet helps students feel comfortable with these explanations, helping to build a strong intuitive grasp of how signals in one domain correspond to signals in the other. Convolution This applet allows students to understand the process of convolution by visually manipulating two functions through the process. It is useful in understanding both how convolution works and also what the effects are on specific signals being convolved together. Discrete Convolution This applet demonstrates how the idea of convolution which we have explored in the continuous domain can also be applied in the discrete domain that the computer operates in. The applet is identical in functionality to the 1D Convolution applet except that students adjust sample values rather than drawing continuous functions. Filter Shape This applet looks at how the shape of the two-dimensional cross-section of a filter affects the results generated when it is used to scale an image. Users are able to sketch and resize their own filters or use previously generated filters and see how each filter affects the scaling of a subregion of an image.

    Course Highlights
This course features materials that can be presented in a variety of ways, as reflected by the versions taught in the Spring 2004 and Spring 2005 terms. Those two semesters represent somewhat different approaches, as the syllabi indicate. For both, the course material references various texts; class notes are also under development.
    Course Description
This course is taken mainly by undergraduates, and explores ideas involving signals, systems and probabilistic models in the context of communication, control and signal processing applications. The material expands out from the basics in and . The treatment involves aspects of analysis, synthesis, and optimization. Topics covered differ somewhat from semester to semester, but typically include: random processes, correlations, spectral densities, state-space modeling, multirate processing, signal estimation and detection.

Wavelets and Signal Processing
It's true that the Torah the visible Torah, that is is only one of the possible permutations of the letters of the eternal Torah, as God crated it and delivered it to the angels. By rearranging the letters of the book over the centuries, we may someday arrive again at the original Torah. But the important thing is not the finding, it is the seeking, it is the devotion with which one spins the wheel of the prayer and scripture, discovering the truth little by little.
Diotallevi in Foucault's Pendulum , by Umberto Eco Using the quote above is, perhaps, ironic, since the character, Diotallevi, in Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum , goes on in the next sentence to denounce the use of computers as tools for seeking truth. Signal processing and filtering is, in its modest way, an attempt to find a better form for a set of information, either by reshaping it or filtering out selected parts (parts that are sometimes labeled as noise). Put another way, signal processing allows us to uncover a form of the signal that is closer to the truth (or a truth). Although we have powerful computing and mathematical tools, perhaps there is some value in taking Diotellevi warning to heart:
