Signals of interest include sound images , biological signals such as ECG radar signals, and many others. Processing of such signals includes storage and reconstruction, separation of information from noise (for example, aircraft identification by radar), compression (for example, image compression ), and feature extraction (for example, speech-to-text conversion).
edit Signal classification
Signals can be either analog or digital, and may come from various sources. There are various sorts of signal processing, depending on the nature of the signal, as in the following examples. For analog signals, signal processing may involve the amplification and filtering of audio signals for audio equipment or the modulation and demodulation of signals for telecommunications. For digital signals, signal processing may involve the compression, error checking and error detection of digital signals.
  • Analog signal processing —for signals that have not been digitized, as in classical radio, telephone, radar, and television systems

W ELCOME TO MY DSP tutorial. DSP stands for Digital Signal Processing - the basis of many areas of technology, from mobile phones to modems and multimedia PCs. DSP devices account for a significant proportion of worldwide semiconductor sales, amounting to billions of dollars annually. DSP is traditionally a highly mathematical subject, and the standard DSP textbooks contain a lot of mathematical exposition. This is necessary for a profound understanding of the subject. However, many people just want a simple introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of DSP. This site aims to provide just that. The site arose from an introductory DSP course I used to teach a few years ago. I am no longer actively involved in DSP, but I have kept the site going because I still receive appreciative messages from people who have found it helpful. I hope that by reading this material, and trying out the Java applets, you will gain a basic appreciation of what DSP is about. If you want to learn more about DSP, try visiting the

Introduction to
Signal Processing
Sophocles J. Orfanidis
Preface
This book provides an applications-oriented introduction to digital signal processing written primarily for electrical engineering undergraduates. Practicing engineers and graduate students may also find it useful as a first text on the subject. Digital signal processing is everywhere. Today's college students hear "DSP" all the time in their everyday life - from their CD players, to their electronic music synthesizers, to the sound cards in their PCs. They hear all about "DSP chips", "oversampling digital filters", "1-bit A/D and D/A converters", "wavetable sound synthesis", "audio effects processors", "all-digital audio studios". By the time they reach their junior year, they are already very eager to learn more about DSP.
Approach
The learning of DSP can be made into a rewarding, interesting, and fun experience for the student by weaving into the material several applications, such as the above, that serve as vehicles for teaching the basic DSP concepts, while generating and maintaining student interest. This has been the guiding philosophy and objective in writing this text. As a result, the book's emphasis is more on signal processing than discrete-time system theory, although the basic principles of the latter are adequately covered. The book teaches by example and takes a hands-on practical approach that emphasizes the

This book is a much revised version of the earlier text Random Processes: An Introduction for Engineers , Prentice-Hall, 1986, which is long out of print. The current book is roughly double the size of the original and radically revised, although the basic philosophy and goals remained.
The history, goals, and motivation behind the book are explained in the preface.

Overview Note: this page is maintained for historical reasons. In July 2004 the CCSP group evolved into two new groups: Communication and Collaboration Systems and Knowledge Tools Media processing, communications, and collaboration tools are exciting new application areas for computers. Our group focuses on advancing the state-of-the-art and developing robust technologies and novel applications in these areas. Our goal is for people to think of their computers as the main tool for multimedia recording, storage, retrieval, communication, collaboration and entertainment. Our work falls into three basic areas:
  • Information Coding and Communication Systems - coding and communication of media signals, including streaming media on demand, live broadcast, real-time communication, messaging, and environment browsing, over existing, emerging, and novel network configurations.
  • Statistical Media Processing - applying signal processing and machine learning tools to solving problems in media identification, classification, clustering, filtering, enhancement, recommendation, organization, and retrieval.
