Satellites have made weather forecasts much more accurate than they were when your parents were little. They allow Meteorologists to track weather systems from far out in the ocean where no one is, and they let us see the BIG picture all at once. They do more than just give us a look at where the clouds are, they can measure the temperature of the ground, the clouds, and water. The satellite pictures you see on TV each night are usually from the GOES 8and GOES 9 spacecraft. GOES stands for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
What does Geo-stationary mean ?
A Geo-stationary satellite is very very high... much higher than the Space Shuttle goes when astronauts go into orbit. The Shuttle can go about 500 kilometers high. The GOES satellite is over 35,000 kilometers above the Earth. At this height, it takes the satellite about 24 hours to go around the Earth... but, since the Earth itself turns around once each 24 hours, the satellite is always over the same spot! That's why we call it Geo (Earth) Stationary (not moving)

Spy satellites are robotic observational platforms that orbit the Earth in order to image its surface and to record radio signals for military and political purposes. They transmit their data to Earth, where it is interpreted by specialists in centralized, secretive facilities such as the U.S. National Photographic Interpretation Center in Washington, D.C. Spy satellites have been essential not only to military operations and the formation of national policy but to the verification of arms control treaties such as SALT I, SALT II, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Hundreds of spy satellites have been launched since 1960, when the U.S. lofted its first. The four basic types of spy satellite are: (1) photoreconnaissance systems that Israel launched the Ofek-5 spy satellite at a coastal air force base south of Tel Aviv in 2002 to exted its ability to monitor developments in the region. Graphic developed by: Steven E. Hall The Webster dictionary defines a satellite as a man-made object put into orbit around a celestial body, like the earth or the moon. Satellites serve a wide variety of purposes from transmission of television signals via communication satellites to guidance and tracking systems of defense satellites. For meteorologists, satellites provide a comprehensive view of the world's weather by observing weather and the environment on a scale not possible by other means. On April 1, 1960, the nation's first weather satellite, "TIROS I" was launched into orbit. Soon after, meteorologists saw the first pictures of a midlatitude cyclone over the northeastern United States. A new era had begun. Since then, weather satellites have been launched into orbit and their capabilities have improved significantly. Today, not only do satellites observe clouds, but measure other non- visible radiation from the earth and atmosphere. This helps us to estimate such aspects as crop and soil conditions as well as monitor concentrations of atmospheric ozone and many other global characteristics. The purpose of this module is to examine Earth observing satellites and their capabilities in greater detail, focusing on two satellite orbital groups in particular;

MILNET: Soviet Satellites
Since the breakup of the former Soviet Union, it is usual not to use the term Soviet or Soviet Union. However the current satellite fleet in existence were developed, launched and maintained by the former Soviet Union, therefore it is simpliar to refer to them today as Soviet Satellites. Since there would seem to be little forward progress in the Russian Space Program (or in any of the other former Soviet Union members), it is likely that the following information is still quite accurate. The Soviet has been highly prolific in the launching of reconaissance and communications satellites. Although little is public about the Soviet imaging technology, it is clear they feel they gain useful information, as they have more than doubled the number of spacecraft launched by the U.S. for recon purposes. In terms of Soviet C3I , as of January 1985, the USSR maintained 21 satellites in 12 geostationary orbits (Gorizont 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10; Raduga 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15; Ekran 7, 10, 11, 12, 13; and Kosmos 1366, 1540, and 1546) and have launched more than 60 recon or comm satellites since 1962. Up until the breakup of the Soviet Union, the satellite launch program accelerated, with probably as many short life satellites in orbit as there were geosynchronous. But with the dissolution of the Soviet Space Program since the breakup, the short life satellites have probably dropped in number dramatically.

Van Allen, which discovered the radiation belt around the earth. Explorer 3 Explorer 3, the third U.S.-IGY Satellite, was launched on Mar 26, 1958. It was a joint ABMA-JPL project that was successfully launched. Explorer 4 Explorer 4, the fourth U.S.-IGY satellite, was successfully launched on Jul 26, 1958 by an Army Jupiter-C/Juno II rocket. It yielded valuable data on radiation belt, micrometeorite impacts, and temperature before returning to earth on Oct 23, 1959. Vanguard Satellites Vanguard 1 Vanguard 1 was the second U.S.-IGY satellite and was launched into orbit Mar 17, 1958 with a life expectancy of perhaps 1,000 years. It was a highly successful scientific satellite which proved that the earth is slightly pear-shaped. It operated on solar-powered batteries and is still transmitting after three years in orbit.

It is available as both a downloadable Excel file and in a tab-delimited text format, and in a version (tab-delimited text) in which the "Name" column contains only the official name of the satellite in the case of government and military satellites, and the most commonly used name in the case of commercial and civil satellites. The database is updated roughly quarterly. Our intent in producing the database is to create a research tool for specialists and non-specialists alike by collecting open-source information on operational satellites and presenting it in a format that can be easily manipulated for research and analysis. The database includes basic information about more than 800 satellites and their orbits, but does not contain the detailed information necessary to locate individual satellites. The UCS Satellite Database is the only free, comprehensive compilation of active satellites in an easy to manipulate, commonly-used database format.

Single table satellites are a form of poker unlike any other. The genesis of the satellite concept originated over twenty years ago during the run-up to the World Series of Poker. Instead of just plopping down $10,000 (or whatever) to enter an event, ten players put up 1/10th of that amount (plus a little for the casino), with the winner winning entry into the larger event. Satellites led to the first great growth spurt in tournament poker.
These days one table satellites have been joined by two relatives. The first relatives are super satellites where many tables of players play and multiple seats are awarded to a main event. The second relatives are online "sit-and-go" one and two table tournaments where normally either three or four people win money. These are related, but require significantly different strategic approaches. Some concepts are similar, but this article doesn't address strategy for super-satellites because they have one drastic difference: it does not matter if you "win". If six seats to the main tournament are awarded, it makes no difference if you come in first or sixth you get the same prize. Also, one table satellites for tournaments are winner-take-all, while online sit-and-go tournaments have "normal" prize structures where the winner gets a larger prize than second, and second gets more than third, so these also have significantly different strategic approaches that we'll deal with another time.

It's a bit "spacey" on this page.. It's all about satellites and oceans. You know what a satellite is, of course....Hm-m-m, You're not sure? Well you're on a satellite right now. Yeah, for real! A satellite is an orbitersomething that travels around another object. Planet Earth is a satellite ofyou guessed itthe sun. The gravity of the sun holds us in orbit. Without the gravitaional pull of the sun, we would go zooming out in to spacenever-never land. The moon is a satellite of Earth.What do you suppose holds the moon in orbit around Earth? Right! Gravity! Earth and Moon are natural satellites. Humans have learned how to create artificial satellites. Don't let that word "artificial" throw you. The satellites are real. Artificial simply means "not natural" because they are made by humans.
Humans have been putting satellites into orbit for quite some time now. You're probably asking about nowWHY? Satellites are used to help us learn more about something such as the weather, oceans, conditions in outer space, and to spy on other countries. Oops, forget that last one. I will deny having ever said it. You didn't hear it from me. Well, back to satellites...
