UC Berkeley Press Release
R. Brady Williamson, pioneer in fire safety engineering science, dies at 73 By Sarah Yang, Media Relations BERKELEY
R. Brady Williamson (Peg Skorpinski photo) Print-quality image available for download Williamson's work significantly helped establish fire safety engineering as a recognized branch of science, characterized the fire hazards of plastics, and improved the safety of building codes used today. Associates and friends remembered Williamson, who also held appointments at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the UC Forest Products Laboratory, as a creative and innovative researcher, known for his kindness and generosity toward his students and colleagues. "He was noted internationally for bringing the dimension of science to bear on fire engineering," said Robert Sawyer, professor emeritus of energy at UC Berkeley's Department of Mechanical Engineering and a close friend of Williamson's. "He was just one of a handful of people worldwide working in the area of fire safety engineering science during the early 1970s. His background in physics was important in understanding how fire behaved, the speed with which fires spread, and the flammability of different materials."

Overview
The 9/11 events have highlighted the national (and to some extent international) need for highly educated and experienced professionals in the area of Homeland Security and Safety Engineering. This program, due to its special nature, represents an interdisciplinary area of research and application that brings together all fields of engineering, and science from the most traditional to the most technologically advanced and novel. A well developed curriculum with, emphasis on fundamentals and practices that define the theory and effective practice of asset and people protection, provides the focus for the Homeland Security and Safety Engineering degree. There are two well known external certifications related to security and safety professionals. The CPP program is the product of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), an international organization for professionals responsible for security. This includes managers and directors of security departments or organizations, as well as full-time security practitioners. With more than 32,000 members worldwide, ASIS draws from corporate and organizational executive and management ranks, plus security consultants and architects, attorneys, and law enforcement professionals. The CPP program was officially launched in 1977, making it the longest-running security certification program. Today, more than 9,500 individuals are CPP-certified, representing one of the largest certified groups of security professionals in existence.

    Welcome to SACHE
The Safety and Chemical Engineering Education (SAChE) program, initiated in 1992, is a cooperative effort between the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and engineering schools to provide teaching materials and programs that bring elements of process safety into the education of undergraduate and graduate students studying chemical and biochemical products and processes. These materials may also be suitable for training purposes in an industrial setting. The SAChE Committee is comprised of representatives from academe and industry in addition to American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) staff (all listed in Committee ). Bringing together the expertise of industrial representatives, consultants, and university faculty, the SAChE Committee develops, reviews, and distributes teaching materials ( Products ) with the ultimate aim of safer operations. These teaching materials can be used by students in many different fields (such as chemical and mechanical engineering as well as chemistry and materials science) as well as practicing engineers in safety training programs. We attempt to put the materials in an easy to use format, and modifications can be made to the materials to fit the circumstances. SAChE is funded through annual membership fees paid by universities and business concerns such as manufacturers and consulting firms; a
