College of Justice and Safety
The Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Program was established in 1975 and is one of only a few programs in the country which offers undergraduate degrees in fire and safety. Areas of study include life safety; fire prevention, suppression and investigation, fire service administration; fire protection principles; industrial loss prevention; safety program management; and occupational safety and health. The academic degree program options were specifically designed to maximize the educational opportunities and to provide the students with an opportunity to specialize within one of the areas that best suits their future career goals. Faculty members in the Fire and Safety Engineering Technology program are nationally and internationally known for their teaching, research and dedication to the fire and safety fields. They are active in numerous professional organizations including the National Association of Fire Investigators, National Fire Protection Association, International Society of Fire Service Instructors, International Association of Arson Investigators and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. They are also frequent presenters at conferences across the country and around the globe. The faculty is especially dedicated to student success and is involved in every aspect of fire and safety.

READERS' POLL: Warehouse fire protection
In the light of the tragic fire at the Atherstone warehouse, how do you think warehouses should be protected in future?
  • The maximum compartment size for unsprinklered warehouses is too large at 20,000 square metres. Sprinklers in themselves are not the only answer and other fire protection measures need to be considered. The regulations at present have got it about right. There should be a wholesale revision of building regulations in respect of such buildings.

O ne of the greatest dangers when going to sea is the risk of collision. The United States Coast Guard requires that large ships be equipped with radar, but this cannot assure that bridge personnel are watching their equipment. As important, many small vessels do not reflect radar signals adequately, making it very difficult for ship's officers to avoid collision in restricted visibility. Our passive C ollision A voidance R adar D etector ( C.A.R.D system is an installed instrument that will display the relative bearing of any vessel operating radar within the range of the antenna's horizon. The system will also alert crew by producing a tone each time the antenna processes a signal. The control panel allows the user to select sensitivity for open ocean or coastal cruising. High and low audio levels have been provided to meet the prevailing condition.
Representing the current state-of-the-art in semiconductor technology, the C.A.R.D. system is the finest collision avoidance system on the market today. Efficient electronic miniaturization has made this remarkable system possible

The University of Edinburgh has been an important institution in the field of Fire Safety Engineering for over three decades. Many of those who are now leaders in the field came to Edinburgh to study and research under the supervision of the late Prof David Rasbash , one of the main pioneers of the discipline, and Prof Dougal Drysdale , author of the definitive text book on the subject, 'Introduction to Fire Dynamics' (Wiley, 2nd edition 1998). Teaching and research in fire safety continues at Edinburgh under the leadership of Prof José Torero , appointed to the BRE/RAE Chair in Fire Safety Engineering in 2004. The BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering is part of the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment School of Engineering and Electronics at The University of Edinburgh.

The Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division (SERAD) was originally formed in 1991 by merging ASME's Safety Division (est. 1951) and the Risk Analysis Task Force. Its function is to stimulate interest in and disseminate risk analysis and safety information as applied to the process of mechanical engineering. Member activity has expanded to include product liability, loss prevention and occupational health.
Safety is the reduced risk achieved by successful application of engineering understanding and controls to hazards. For new products and processes, risk is identified and minimized by analysis of previous experience and conservative design.
The basic concern for human health and safety as well as the reduction in business interruptions and insurance costs makes the work of the Division increasingly important.
