Welcome to the JPL Robotics website! Here you'll find detailed descriptions of the activities of the Mobility and Robotic Systems Section, as well as related robotics efforts around the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. We are approximately 100 engineers working on all aspects of robotics for space exploration and related terrestrial applications. We write autonomy software that drives rovers on Mars, and operations software to monitor and control them from Earth. We do the same for their instrument-placement and sampling arms, and are developing new systems with many limbs for walking and climbing. To achieve mobility off the surface, we are creating prototypes of airships to fly through the atmospheres of Titan and Venus, and drills and probes to go underground on Mars and Europa. To enable all of these robots to interact with their surroundings, we make them see with cameras and measure their environments with other sensors. Based on these measurements, the robots control themselves with algorithms also developed by our research teams. We capture the control-and-sensor-processing software in unifying frameworks, which enable reuse and transfer among our projects. In the course of developing this technology, we build real end-to-end systems as well as high-fidelity simulations of how the robots will work on worlds we are planning to visit.

Robots are generally used to perform unsafe, hazardous, highly repetitive, and unpleasant tasks. They have many different functions such as material handling, assembly, welding, machine tool load and unload functions, painting, spraying, and so forth.
Studies indicate that many robot accidents occur during non-routine operating conditions, such as programming, maintenance, testing, setup, or adjustment. During many of these operations the worker may temporarily be within the robot's working envelope where unintended operations could result in injuries.

Jan 3, 2008, Indian robots toil on global shop floors Lower labor cost is the reason often cited for off-shoring manufacturing jobs. So why would it be cheaper to use robots in India than in the USA? It's because only a fifth of the cost of deploying the robot is the cost of the robot itself. The rest of the cost is programming the robot, developing the tools and developing the manufacturing processes. It will be a long time before we automate that part of the equation. November 28, 2007, University Programs in Robotics Q. My students in Middle School would like to know about the list of universities that offer programs in robotics that you are compiling. Can you share what you already have? I don't want them to email strangers on their own. Thanks.
A. The term robotics has become so broad that it now applies to just about any electro-mechanical system. I think every University in the country that has an undergraduate engineering program also does something in robotics.
Here are some schools that have graduate programs in robotics: MIT, Stanford, CMU, UTexas Austin, UTexas Arlington, UFlorida, UMichigam, UTennessee, USC, UWashington, UHawaii and Georgia Tech. I'm sure there are many more.

robotics Last modified: Thursday, February 10, 2000 The field of computer science and engineering concerned with creating robots, devices that can move and react to sensory input . Robotics is one branch of artificial intelligence Robots are now widely used in factories to perform high-precision jobs such as welding and riveting. They are also used in special situations that would be dangerous for humans for example, in cleaning toxic wastes or defusing bombs. Although great advances have been made in the field of robotics during the last decade, robots are still not very useful in everyday life, as they are too clumsy to perform ordinary household chores. Robot was coined by Czech playwright Karl Capek in his play R.U.R (Rossum's Universal Robots), which opened in Prague in 1921. Robota is the Czech word for forced labor.

Robots need to interact with their surroundings. We make them see with cameras and measure their environments with other sensors. Based on these measurements, robots control themselves with algorithms also developed by research/ students/ enthusiasts. Monitoring the capture control and sensor processing software in unifying frameworks, will enable re-use, fine tuning and better performance of the robot. It has been said that the HAL 9000 computer is the most empathetic character in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Even though his "nervous breakdown" turns him into a murderer, his eventual "death" by disconnection is sadder than any other death in the movie. But almost everyone who has seen the movie has wondered: what exactly caused HAL's breakdown? Robots will become more sophisticated. With increased logic comes responsibility. Engineers will have to prepare for the day when the robot says..

Welcome to Pyro!
Pyro stands for Py thon Ro botics. The goal of the project is to provide a programming environment for easily exploring advanced topics in artificial intelligence and robotics without having to worry about the low-level details of the underlying hardware. That is not to say that Pyro is just a toy. In fact, Pyro is used for real robotics research as well as courseware. Pyro is written in Python. Python is an interpreted language, which means that you can experiment interactively with your robot programs. In addition to being an environment, Pyro is also a collection of object classes in Python. Because Pyro abstracts all of the underlying hardware details, it can be used for experimenting with several different types of mobile robots and robot simulators. Until now, it has been necessary to learn very different and specific control languages for different mobile robots, particularly those manufactured by different companies. Now, a single language can be used to program many different robots, allowing code to be shared across platforms as well as allowing students to experiment with different robots while learning a single language and environment. Robots: Currently, the robots supported include the Pioneer family (Pioneer, Pioneer2, People
