How Old is this Rock?
I had originally meant to take on the Just Science week Challenge, where I'd write a new entry every day about science and science only, no Bears, no music of the week, no asinine and unproductive bill brought up by some pandering politician. But, I flaked. Brian of ..Or Something fame kicked this challenge's ass. But, I decided that instead of daily posts, why not one ginormous one, guaranteed not to be read by even my most dedicated friend? So here you go, the science of Geochronology. I intend to come back to different aspect of this topic in the future, just as I have discussed it in the recent past.
Geochronology is an umbrella term for all of the techniques we use to determine the absolute ages of rocks and/or individual minerals. All modern geochronology is based on measuring the stable daughter atoms produced during the radioactive decay of naturally occurring elements, most notably uranium (U), thorium (Th), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), and lutecium (Lu). It is now common and fairly simple to measure the absolute abundances of these elements in rocks, or in many cases individual crystals, with a high degree of precision. As a geochronologist, the real work comes with figuring out what those ages mean.

I will attempt to give you a few answers to your questions concerning radiometric dating. If you want to study what creationists say about radiometric dating in depth, I recommend three books, The Mythology of Modern Dating Methods and Studies in Flood Geology , both by John Woodmorappe and Creation's Tiny Mystery by Robert Gentry. John Woodmorappe's books are advertised elsewhere on my web site. These books contain an exhaustive study of radiometric dates that do not fit the results evolutionists expect. There is also an exhaustive ongoing study of this subject called the RATE (Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth) Group, a team of six scientists who are investigating the subject in depth, and have published the first of several studies. There are several methods of radiometric dating. Carbon-14 dating has limited value for evolution because its half-life is too short. The method assumes that the production of Carbon-14 in the atmosphere from nitrogen is a process that is in equilibrium, and it is not.

    Radiometric Dating Methods
    A Thoughtful Analysis
    By Jonathan A. Drake
...while you read We are expected to believe that the issue is settled. We are told that there are methods by which we can determine accurately the age of this incredible earth. Does radiometric dating provide the desperately needed 'proof' that evolutionists have long been searching for? Is it accurate enough? Is it valid? In the next few thoughts, I seek to enlighten you to the reality of the fallacy of radiometric dating, and answer these probing questions.
In order to correctly understand the issue, you must come to an understanding of the process or mechanics behind the idea of radiometric dating. There are several methods used, but in this small article, only two will be examined:
    - The Uranium-Thorium-Lead method
    - And the Potassium-Argon method
Each of these methods rely upon the common fact that the parent component in a system (e.g., uranium) will gradually 'decay' into the daughter component (e.g., lead). To gain an index of time since the original formation of the system, you document the relative proportions of the two components. Therefore, based on the certain amounts of the components in a sample, you can tell how old the sample is.
This is all seemingly fine until you evaluate the assumptions that this system is built upon. In order for the radiometric dating system to be accurate, the system would:

Uniformitarian geologists consider this form of dating strong evidence that the Earth is billions of years old. However, research by creationists has revealed a large number of problems with radiometric dating . In some cases such as Carbon-14 dating , radioactive dating actually gives strong evidence for a young Earth , while other methods such as K-Ar dating and Isochron dating are based on faulty assumptions and so unreliable as to be useless.

Geologists prefer most of the others because most rocks are much older; creationists who talk about carbon dating of rocks reveal a remarkable ignorance of the subject.

RADIOACTIVE AGE ESTIMATION METHODS - Do they prove the earth is billions of years old?
See this page in: Russian - Русский H ow old is planet Earth? There are enormous differences of opinion. The most common view is that Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. Others say it is older or younger. The lowest age defended on a scientific basis is in the 6 to 10 thousand year range. Evolutionism, of course, requires billions of years to support the plausibility of life's emergence and of subsequent Evolution from "amoeba" to man. Theoretically, Creationism remains workable within a wide range of age estimates. Scientists have proposed numerous age estimation methods. Most systems promoted by Evolutionists involve radioactivity. Various radioactive elements are involved, including Carbon-14, Uranium-238, Thorium-232, and Potassium-40. By the way, it is important to understand that most rock strata "dates" were actually assigned long before the first use of radioactive age estimating methods in 1911. The Carbon-14 age estimating method is, at best, only useful for estimating the age of things that are thousands of years old, not millions or billions. And it does not work on rocks or thoroughly mineralized fossils; it is only useful for relatively well-preserved organic materials such as cloth, wood, and other non-fossilized materials. Other methods must be used to estimate the age of rocks and minerals. Two of the most widely-known systems are the potassium-argon method and the uranium-lead method.

    Dating Dinosaurs
Interest in dinosaurs can be traced back to 1810 when Mary Anning discovered the first complete skeleton of an Icthyosaurus in the cliffs at Lyme Regis, England. In 1824, in the same Dorset cliffs, she found the fossilized remains of a Plesiosauros and four years later she uncovered the first English Pteradactyl.
The term 'dinosaur' was first coined in 1841 by Sir Richard Owen, a well known English anatomist and palaeontologist. It comes from two Greek words: 'deinos' meaning terrible and 'sauros' meaning lizard - and so 'terrible lizard'.
Evolutionists tell us that dinosaurs died out some 70 million years ago. As the fossils do not come out of the ground with dating labels attached to them how then do palaeontologists date their fossil finds?

Is life younger than 7,000 years as is the claim of Young-Earth Creationists ? Others like some Jehovah’s Witnesses and Bible Students believe that the creative days of Genesis are each 7,000-years in length . Do these conclusions agree with scientific data of our modern day? We will examine the arguments for both the 24-hour creative days as well as 7,000-year creative days. When these have been understood we will cross examine them in the light of scientific evidence and see how long life on our Earth has been here. If the evidence points to less than 23,000 years as Bible Students believe, then we can conclude that the 7,000-year creative day is correct. If the evidence points to less than 7,000-years then we can conclude that the 24-hour creative day is correct and perhaps embrace creationist claims. We will seek to prove that advanced life ahs indeed been around not only for many thousands of years and point even to millions of years.
