Public Policy
Freddie Mac is a unique corporate entity created by Congress to serve specific housing policy objectives. As such, we think carefully about the impacts of legislation, policies, and industry issues on our company and the ability to fulfill our mission. We believe it's important for our customers, shareholders, industry partners, members of Congress and others to know and understand our viewpoint on a variety of issues.

Securitization Activities, Retained Portfolio, Together Making a Difference in Liquidity Crunch
Speaking to UCLA's Anderson School of Management, Freddie Mac CEO Richard F. Syron takes a closer look at the liquidity crisis facing America and how the GSEs can be part of the solution. He explains why over time, Freddie Mac's everyday activities to carry out its mission are making the greatest difference to help cushion the negative effects of the liquidity crunch on borrowers and communities. However, Syron cautions against misperceptions that the GSEs' operations are "infinitely elastic." Says Syron, "The fact is, we are also shareholder-owned corporations, and there are points beyond which our business model simply cannot work on a sustainable basis."

Money Adaptation a new piece at ... The American on how money saves us from unhappiness in old age. A slice: Easterlin, drawing on the massive General Social Survey, reports that health satisfaction heads steadily south from eighteen on, while family satisfaction peaks at about fifty then tails off determinedly. Job satisfaction hits a crescendo at about sixty and slopes off with retirement. Only financial satisfaction, like Matlock reruns, gets better with old age. Financial satisfaction, Easterlin finds, dips until the mid-thirties, levels off, then heads skyward, soaring ever higher each remaining year of life. If not for sharply rising financial satisfaction, the mild downward slide from midlife would be a sharp drop into a well of gray-haired despair. Money does make us happy in at least this one way: as a firewall against an otherwise soul-sapping senescence. But Easterlin—a vocal critic of the money-happiness link—does not interpret his findings quite this way. Why not? Why not find out 6 comments

Latest News Clinic Study Finds Many Companies Are Quietly Selling Personal Information to Third Parties
In a new study (PDF), students and researchers at the Samuelson Clinic made requests for companies' information sharing policies under SB 27, California's "Shine the Light" Law. Enacted in 2003, SB 27 requires companies doing business with California residents to disclose their information sharing policies, or allow individuals to opt out of third- party information sharing. The Samuelson Clinic made 86 requests under this law, and found that while many companies have voluntarily adopted a policy of not sharing personal information with third parties, many still operate under an opt-out model that is inconsistent with consumer expectations, and others simply did not respond to the request. Only two companies made a full disclosure of information sharing relationships, and many of the companies that sold personal information shrouded their policies in vague, euphemistic, and sometimes contradictory language.

Corporations cannot be sent to jail like individuals. And fines, our most common means of punishing corporate wrongdoing, are to large multinationals what a few mosquitoes might be to a day at the beach for a CEO.
