Heinz Endowments Gift of $13 Million to Heinz School
Carnegie Mellon today received more than $22 million in grants from The Heinz Endowments, one of the largest private foundation grants in the university's history. The grants will be used to strengthen the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, expand teaching and research in green chemistry and sustainability, and encourage more innovations in robotics and computer science. The majority of the grant money - $13 million - will be used to support the Heinz School's strategic plan, which includes the creation of a new school of information systems management (IS). The IS school will serve as a counterpart with the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management to form a new college, the name of which is being finalized. The gift will be used to increase the college's endowment, allow the hiring of new faculty and renovate classroom and conference facilities. Full text...

About the Foundation
The Texas Public Policy Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-partisan research institute guided by the core principles of individual liberty, personal responsibility, private property rights, free markets and limited government.
The Foundation’s mission is to improve Texas by generating academically sound research and data on state issues, and by recommending the findings to opinion leaders, policymakers, the media and general public.
Learn more about the Foundation in our video, Ideas Into Action Research Link Virginia Institute for Public Policy View all Research Links Highlighted Research Violate at Your Own Risk: The Immutability of Economic Laws Thinking Economically: Lesson One Thinking Economically is a project of the Texas Public Policy Foundation designed to provide a basic economic education for policymakers, the media, and the general public. In this way, the Foundation hopes to highlight the intersection of economics and public policy, and the importance of “thinking economically” when making policy decisions. This paper shows that immutability of economic laws means that there are limits to what can be accomplished in the political realm. Texas School Accountability Standards 101 Texas has a complex public school accountability system to evaluate schools and school districts. The system lacks rigor, is too complex, and does not align with the federal accountability system. To hold schools accountable, policymakers need to make significant changes to the state accountability system.

Government plays an important, ubiquitous role in contemporary society. Moreover, the growing complexity of public policies, the political processes that give rise to them, and the organizations that implement them have created a need in government, business, and the nonprofit sector for people who understand how government operates. The Public Policy Program gives students the foundational skills and institutional knowledge necessary for understanding the policy process, and provides an interdisciplinary course of study in the design, management, and evaluation of public sector programs and institutions. The major in Public Policy is useful as preparation for employment as an analyst in government agencies or business: as a foundation for postgraduate professional schools in business, education, law, and public policy: and as preparation for graduate study in the social sciences, especially economics, political science, and sociology. The Public Policy Program at Stanford offers both an undergraduate degree and, after Faculty Senate approval on February 8, a Masters in Public Policy. The Masters is only available to graduate students already admitted into other Stanford graduate degree programs.

Public Policy
This history of suicide prevention legislation began in 1997, with the passage of resolutions by Congress recognizing suicide as a national problem and declaring suicide prevention a national priority. Since then, two major laws have been enacted: The Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act (PL 108-355) and the Joshua Omvig Veterans Suicide Prevention Act (PL 110-110). In addition, the movement has witnessed the formation of a national Suicide Prevention Resource Center, the establishment of a national suicide prevention hotline, and the development of a National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. Many state governments have also passed suicide prevention legislation, including resolutions recognizing suicide as a problem, and authorizing the development of state suicide prevention plans. SPAN USA's Public Policy Priorities: Each year, SPAN USA gathers insight from national suicide prevention advocates and experts to develop its annual Public Policy Priorities this document, which outlines what SPAN USA believes to be the most important public policy issues, guides our advocacy efforts throughout the year.
