1. Policy - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia
The term public policy always refers to the actions of government and public policy is the outcome of the struggle in government over who gets what .

For the C++ idiom called "policies", see policy-based design A policy is a deliberate plan of action to guide decisions and achieve rational outcome(s). The term may apply to government, private sector organizations and groups, and individuals. Presidential executive orders corporate privacy policies , and parliamentary rules of order are all examples of policy. Policy differs from rules or law . While law can compel or prohibit behaviors (e.g. a law requiring the payment of taxes on income) policy merely guides actions toward those that are most likely to achieve a desired outcome. Policy or policy study may also refer to the process of making important organizational decisions, including the identification of different alternatives such as programs or spending priorities, and choosing among them on the basis of the impact they will have. Policies can be understood as political, management, financial, and administrative mechanisms arranged to reach explicit goals.

Our political advertising policies
Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 2:30 PM
Posted by Peter Greenberger, Elections and Issue Advocacy Team
The Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary are behind us, and Super Tuesday is just around the corner. So far in this presidential campaign season, candidates have used the web in new and creative ways - including social networks, maps mashups, geo-targeting online ads and even sending a Twitter or two. While none of these tools can take the place of voters sizing up a candidate up close (bringing to mind the New Hampshire voter who once said she hadn't made up her mind about a candidate because "I've only met him twice"), these new technologies have helped voters get more personally engaged in the political process.
The same is true of ads. TV and radio campaign ads, with their charges and counter-charges, have long been a staple of political campaigns. And increasingly, candidates of all political stripes are using keyword ads on Google and other search engines to help reach voters who care about particular issues. Political candidates used to have to go door-to-door or stand outside supermarkets to recruit potential supporters. Now they can build a base of support more efficiently online, in part by using Google's targeted advertising tools to reach prospective voters directly.

INFORMATION FOR SPOTLIGHT he faculty of the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy engages in the interdisciplinary enterprise of problem solving in the public interest. We are a learning community especially interested in policy concerning science and innovation, the environment, economic development and governance of information technology. The problems we address are complex, with many interests to satisfy and a scale beyond the reach of any single organization or academic discipline. More often than not there is a direct connection to our quality of life and the future of our communities. If the challenges of this field interest you, we offer degrees at all levels – BS MS and PhD – as well as minors and certificates for those studying in other areas.
Our faculty members are research oriented, with over $10 million in research underway. Our degrees are analytically oriented, developing skills increasingly in demand in the policy world as data and powerful software becomes more readily available and policy challenges grow more complex. Because our degree programs are smaller than most, there are opportunities at all levels for students to become involved in research, from the fast growing numbers of undergraduate students helping on faculty research projects to the opportunities many of our PhD students have to publish scholarly papers.
Our School emphasizes professional level analysis of the ethical and philosophical dimensions of policy. Our philosophers help you consider not just how things have been and how they are, but how they ought to be. We are unusual among policy schools in having an active research program at the intersection of philosophy, ethics and policy. In our School, you will be taught by

Amy Jordan Briefs Senate Staff on Childhood Obesity
Wednesday, January 23, 2008
More than nine million children in the United States are overweight, a figure that has tripled since the 1970s. Overweight children are more likely to suffer psychological and physical health problems in their youth, and those problems are likely to follow them to adulthood. Obesity may be the number-one health problem facing children today.   That was the message delivered in Washington today by Amy B. Jordan, director of the Media and the Developing Child sector of the Annenberg Public Policy Center. Jordan and an expert panel briefed Senate staff members on Capitol Hill on the problem of childhood obesity as well as new research findings published this month in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

At the same time, GAP is working to improve the flow of geoscience information to policy-makers. Equally important is the program's mission of providing federal science-policy information back to the Member Societies and the geoscience community at large.
