Last Reviewed on 08/30/07 Our department is home to some of the most creative faculty and unique research programs in the country. Our department is divided into three research areas, Cognitive Developmental , and Social Psychology. Each area has its own theme, but a common thread across all three areas is a connection between the study of psychology and people's everyday lives. In our graduate program , students work closely with faculty to develop and conduct original research. Coursework provides depth of knowledge in the student's main areas of interest, as well as breadth in other areas of psychology. We have excellent facilities, and conduct research in both the laboratory and community. Our undergraduate program offers courses in all areas of psychology, and provides many unique opportunities. Our students compete nationally for scholarships, grants and awards. Together with faculty, they publish cutting-edge research. They consistently secure postgraduate positions at some of the most prestigious universities in the country as well as employment in industry, government and academia. We offer graduate and undergraduate training programs in clinical and experimental psychology. Our clinical training program is accredited by the

The Department participates in the Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Perceptual Science funded by an IGERT grant from NSF. Research grants held by Psychology faculty average nearly $6.0 million per year. In addition to its research, the Psychology Department has a strong undergraduate teaching program, with both the most majors (approximately 1,200) and the most minors (approximately 1,600) of departments in the School of Arts and Sciences ( SAS ). Enrollment in undergraduate psychology courses exceeds 20,000 per year. The Department typically teaches about 130 lecture courses (including several advanced topics and honors courses), 50 laboratory sections, and 10 internship/fieldwork courses each year. Approximately 300 undergraduates per year conduct independent and honors research with the faculty. Our Behavioral Pharmacology Certificate and Internship Program trains graduate and undergraduate students for employment in the pharmaceutical industry and related companies. Moreover, the Psychology Department attracts more applications to the graduate program than any other SAS department in the University (well over 400 each year).

WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
From the firing of neurons in the human brain to the complex web of personalities and behaviors within a multi-national corporation, psychology is a part of our every move, decision, and thought. The professional trained in psychology can have an enormous effect on individuals, families, companies, schools. At Southern, psychology students learn to observe without prejudice, analyze with clarity, and construct a plan of action that solves problems. Along with exploring the insights of past and present practitioners, psychology students also gain the hands-on skills of the research scientist, designing experiments, interpreting complex data, and communicating results. Careers for psychology graduates are varied and exciting. With a bachelor's or advanced degree, graduates find jobs in clinics, hospitals, and schools, with social service agencies, and in research facilities at universities, government agencies, or in private industry.
