Primate Behaviour
Dr. Bill Sellers
Introduction
Up till know I've talked mostly about physical features: how they apply to extant primates; how we use them for classification; how they apply to the fossil record. But human evolution isn't simply about how we have changed physically over the last 70 million years, but also about how our behaviour has changed. If I asked you to define what is meant by the term "human", you could probably (hopefully) give me a list of shared, derived characters that anatomically define us. But at a philosophical level, I would hope that what you'd be really proud of is not that we normally walk bipedally, but that we can reason and imagine. Old Descartes put it succinctly: "I think, therefore I am" (but not quite in this context). This lecture isn't about human behaviour per se

http://anthropology.si.edu/humanorigins/ha/primate.html
Our Primate Origins: An Introduction Like all other organisms, humans have evolved over time from earlier species, and share a genetic relationship to all other forms of life on Earth. The study of human evolution involves understanding the similarities and differences between humans and other species in their genes, body form, physiology, and behavior. To understand human evolution one must understand where humans fit in relation to other forms of life. Modern humans belong to the group of mammals known as Primates. This is the scientific category describing such diverse creatures as lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, the monkeys of the New World and Old World, and also the apes. As primates we all share many characteristics, such as overlapping fields of vision caused by forward looking eyes (this allows for greater 3D vision), fine ability to grasp and handle objects in our hands, and enlarged brains relative to body size. The evolution of the Primates started in the early part of the Eocene epoch (about 55 million years ago).

What can you do? Get involved in conservation efforts and tell your friends! Saving Planet Earth You can make a positive change to the planet we live on... Introduction - What are the threats? Conflict with humans Human-wildlife conflict is becoming increasingly common as human populations grow and natural habitat declines. People and non-human primates are at risk from loss of food sources, disease transmission, injury and death. Conservationists are trying to develop mitigation strategies that both protect endangered species, such as great apes, and assist local people. This is a considerable challenge, especially with regards to crop raiding. More about human-wildlife conflict An overview on human-wildlife conflict How can we resolve conflict? The bushmeat trade For centuries, hunting for bushmeat was a sustainable way to provide food for local families. However, demand has risen steeply and, while gorillas and chimpanzees, for instance, make up a small proportion of the bushmeat trade, the effect on populations is devastating.

We religious people are not adept at taking criticism. Since religion is based on the idea of divinely revealed truth, most religions would rather hide their imperfections, the better to demonstrate that their practitioners are as infallible as their doctrines. A recent article in Time magazine identified Utah as the state with the highest rate of depression in America, which seems curious. I have been close to the Mormon Church for 15 years. Mormons lead clean, healthy, and generous lives. They raise close-knit families. So why so unhappy? Because they are not trained to be open about things that trouble them. A Mormon mom, for example, has lots of kids which brings lots of joy but also lots of pressure. But she sometimes has to pretend to be happy, even when she's not. And the lack of an outlet to express unhappiness becomes a dangerous source of melancholy. The Catholic Church, of course, is legend for the inadequacy of its apologies. Whether it was the scandal of pedophile priests, or the even the great John Paul II's grossly deficient apology for Catholic anti-Semitism and the Church's failure to speak out during the holocaust, the Church often feels that it has to feign infallibility even when it is guilty of serious crimes.

SFBR is home to more than 5000 nonhuman primates, including chimpanzees and a variety of monkey species. By far the majority, though, are baboons.

Smaller numbers of other species of primates are also housed at SNPRC for different research projects. These include spider monkeys and pigtailed macaques. To learn more about the primate species at SNPRC, click on the links below: SNPRC has an extensive environmental enrichment program . The goal of the program is to provide a better home for the monkeys and apes housed in our facilities. We give them opportunities to express species-typical behaviors that are found normally in primates living in the wild. Top Of Page

This great ape has been reduced to 7,000 animals living in 13 fragments of land on the island of Sumatra, according to a new report.
Large-scale logging continues to convert this orangutan's native forests to agriculture and palm oil plantations, says the October 26, 2007, report by the Primate Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union's Species Survival Commission and the International Primatological Society, in collaboration with Conservation International.
The report names the world's 25 most endangered primates and says that a third of all primates are in danger of extinction ( read full story ). Key culprits are "destruction of tropical forests, illegal wildlife trade and commercial bushmeat hunting."

Primates and Philosophers:
How Morality Evolved
Frans de Waal
Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents
Chapter 1 [HTML] or [PDF format] "It's the animal in us," we often hear when we've been bad. But why not when we're good? Primates and Philosophers tackles this question by exploring the biological foundations of one of humanity's most valued traits: morality. In this provocative book, primatologist Frans de Waal argues that modern-day evolutionary biology takes far too dim a view of the natural world, emphasizing our "selfish" genes. Science has thus exacerbated our reciprocal habits of blaming nature when we act badly and labeling the good things we do as "humane." Seeking the origin of human morality not in evolution but in human culture, science insists that we are moral by choice, not by nature. Citing remarkable evidence based on his extensive research of primate behavior, de Waal attacks "Veneer Theory," which posits morality as a thin overlay on an otherwise nasty nature. He explains how we evolved from a long line of animals that care for the weak and build cooperation with reciprocal transactions. Drawing on both Darwin and recent scientific advances, de Waal demonstrates a strong continuity between human and animal behavior. In the process, he also probes issues such as anthropomorphism and human responsibilities toward animals. Based on the Tanner Lectures de Waal delivered at Princeton University's Center for Human Values in 2004

Primate Phylogeny The primate tree below was redrawn from cladograms and information from the Primates section of the University of Arizona Tree of Life, from the Primate Information Network at the University of Wisconsin. The primates are astonishingly diverse, ranging from tiny marmosets and bushbabies to massive gorillas. The thirty-odd branches of the tree below represent more than 50 genera and hundreds of species. There are four main branches of the tree below:
  • the Platyrrhine (flatnosed) or New World Monkeys the Catarrhine (down-nosed) or Old World primates, including
