BEBR began making population estimates for Florida and its counties in the 1950s. The Population Program was formally established in 1972 when BEBR received the first of a continuous series of annual contracts from the State of Florida to produce the state's official city and county population estimates. The Population Program continues to produce Florida’s official city, county, and state population estimates each year. These estimates are used for state revenue-sharing and many other planning, budgeting, and analytical purposes. The program also produces estimates of households and average household size and projections by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin for the state and each county. Members of the Population Program work on a variety of demographic research projects and publish the results in books, monographs, scholarly journals, and technical reports. They also make presentations on Florida's demographic trends to business, government, and civic groups throughout the state and respond to many telephone requests for demographic data and analysis.

End of Page The Fraud of Malthusianism Site Map Overview Page The worst evils against human dignity and national sovereignty cover themselves as ``population policies'' and ``expert population studies.'' Such ``population studies,'' by bodies like the U.S. National Security Council, have justified mass sterilizations, forced abortions, and even wars against Third World nations. The U.N.'s ongoing series of world government conferences including the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development, wanted to reduce the human population by half in 100 years. Where did this diabolical ``field of expertise'' come from? Encyclopedias and histories of the so-called ``science of demography,'' agree that it was primarily the invention of Sir William Petty, Britain's first Earl of Shelburne (1622-1687). The Galton Laboratory in London, world center since the 1920s of the notorious eugenics movementfor ``scientific improvement of populations''emphatically asserted in 1931 published lectures, that Petty founded ``population studies'' along with his friends Sir John Graunt, lord mayor of London, and Sir Edmund Halley. This was at the time of the chartering of the British Royal Society, of which all three were charter members. Its founding was based on a plan by Petty, which immediately became the European center of ``population statistics'' from the 1660s onward.

Founded in 1971, it initially functioned within the University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Created in response to the government’s call for greater involvement of the academe in population issues, OPS is committed to undertake:
    • research in population and related issues systematic teaching of population and related courses; and development of academic and technical staff for population research and teaching activities.

We have reached a point where genotypic data is much less an issue than in the past with the advent of new sequencing technologies and the rapid decline in costs per base pair. The rapid decline in the cost of sequencing should be celebrated (and nourished further), but the reality is that sequence data alone is far from even good. To provide real insights that will improve human health, this data needs to be tied to health information, i.e. phenotypic data. The real bottleneck and financial hurdle now is to get good phenotypic data. And lots of it for lots of different types of people.

National Taiwan University Preface Organization Current Activities Future Prospect ... Chinese Mode PREFACE Rapid growth in population and urbanization has occurred in Taiwan's demographic transition in the last few decades. There is an urgent need for research on the problems created by this demographic experience, as a basis for formulating policies. Apart from studies conducted by family planning centers and research institutes, no formal institution is solely concerned with population research and education. The formal establishment of the Population Studies Center (The Center) in 1974, through the approval of the Ministry of Education, was a major step forward in filling this gap. It is still the only academic institute of its kind in Taiwan. Because of its significant contribution in the research of gender relations, the Center has been renamed Population and Gender Studies Center in 1999. The center takes an interdisciplinary approach to promote the study of population and gender issues, to facilitate exchange on population information, and to offer population related courses. back to top ORGANIZATION The Center brings together faculty members from National Taiwan University and coordinates an interdisciplinary program in the study of population and gender. It provides a resource base for university faculty to pursue research and teaching devoted to the understanding of population phenomena and solution to population-related problems in Taiwan. The scope of these studies includes not only demographic areas per se but also the interrelationships of population growth, distribution and change with related social, cultural, economic, political, behavioral, physiological, genetic, public health, geographical and psychological aspects. The departments represented at the university are History, Anthropology, Geography, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Public Health, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, and the Graduate Institute of Building and Planning.

The Cancer and Population Studies group investigates the role of environmental factors in the causation and prognosis of chronic conditions, particularly cancer and its precursors. Increasingly, our research involves investigating how genes modify the effect of environmental factors to cause or prevent cancer. We also work with laboratory colleagues to use molecular markers to investigate mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Our main interests are in cancers of the skin, female genital tract, oesophagus and pancreas. Three major collaborative projects are national population-based case-control studies of oesophageal cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. Additional Queensland-based studies are investigating Barrett's oesophagus (a pre-cancerous condition), benign ovarian tumours and pancreatic cancer. Quality of life and the use of complementary and alternative medicines by women with ovarian cancer are also being evaluated. Another major project is the 20 year follow-up of almost 1,000 residents of the township of Nambour, Queensland. This study focuses on the common skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and associated pre-malignant skin conditions including solar keratoses and photoageing to which Australians are especially prone. Besides solar radiation, the effects of diet and human papilloma virus (HPV) infection are also being studied. Other projects are investigating the molecular epidemiology of melanoma, especially the relationship between sun exposure and risk of melanoma at different sites of the body. In addition, we are working in partnership with several Indigenous health research groups on a variety of projects including a Paediatric Respiratory Outreach Program in the Torres Strait, a study of bronchiectasis in the Northern Territory and a study of cancer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland.

The Population and Health study area conducts basic and applied research, offers professional education and training, and facilitates the exchange of information among policymakers, program managers, and scholars on critical population and health issues facing the Asia-Pacific region. The objective is to improve understanding of how social, economic, cultural, political, and environmental conditions interact with demographic and health trends and to contribute to the formulation of effective population, health, and development policies and programs. Current research focuses on six important population and health issues: Asia's transition from high to low fertility . Fertility research at the East-West Center increasingly focuses on the causes and consequences of very low fertility in many Asian countries…. Macroeconomic aspects of population change . Changes in fertility and mortality can have profound economic effects on a society through changes in the population age structure…. Family change in Asia and the United States . This project examines new patterns of family formation, roles of family members, and the relationship between work and family life….
