Astronomers survey events and sources across the full range of astronomical disciplines, from the study of flaring events on the Sun and the distribution of minor planets in the solar system, to the study of the distributions of stars and compact objects in the Galaxy, and extending to the distribution of galaxies and explosive transient sources throughout the visible cosmos. The catalogs produced by such surveys span a factor of tens of millions in size, leading to a great diversity in the range of scientific questions and methodological issues data analysts must address.

    Population Studies
Population Studies involves the examination of important social, cultural, and economic trends through an interdisciplinary perspective, often making use of demographic research methods. At the University of Colorado at Boulder, Population Studies faculty undertake research on a number of topics including the patterns between environmental conditions and migration, family structure and aging, teenage sexual behaviors and childbearing, and social inequality and health. To address important research questions, graduate students apply demographic theories and methods to rich cross-sectional, longitudinal, and contextual data sources. Graduate students are trained for a wide range of professional, academic, and research roles in public and private organizations concerned with population issues and problems.

    SSPS Roster
The Social Sciences and Population Studies [SSPS] Study Section reviews applications related to population processes, composition and distribution, their antecedents and consequences, and their inter-relationships with social, cultural, economic, behavioral, developmental and biomedical factors and processes. This includes studies of migration, mortality and health, residential distribution, reproduction, sexual health, population aging, labor force and retirement, household and family structure, intergenerational relations, and biodemography in the U.S. and other countries. It also includes the development and validation of methodologies for population research, including estimation and projection, formal and mathematical demography, modeling and simulation, qualitative and ethnographic methods, and measurement, design, and statistical analysis. Studies of gender, race and ethnicity as they relate to population processes are included. Specific areas covered by SSPS:
    • Migration, emigration and immigration, including movement of people within and across national boundaries; social, cultural, economic, behavioral, and health factors and processes associated with population movement; processes related to migration [e.g., acculturation, adaptation]; interstate, intercity, local migration and residential distribution; refugee movements.

The Local Population Studies Society (LPSS) is the United Kingdom's only charity solely devoted to the promotion of all aspects of historical demography in a local context. It publishes the internationally renowned journal Local Population Studies , and has an eclectic publications programme. LPSS organizes themed conferences on topics related to local populations in the past. Members of LPSS receive two copies of the journal and two newsletters each year, membership of the LPSS Book Club and advance notice of the LPSS conferences. This website contains information about the Society and its outputs. The main feature of this site is the archive of back issues of the journal Local Population Studies . The first 60 issues, covering publication from 1968 to 1998 are available free of charge on this site, though the Society welcomes orders for print copies of both those present on this site and those presently unavailable on this site. Our Bird Population Studies (BPS) program conducts research that seeks to understand how the distribution and abundance of birds varies through time and space. Currently, two very active areas of research are the effects of disease on bird populations, and causes of variation in nesting success of birds from north to south through North America. Much of this work involves analysis of data collected by the Lab's citizen scientists. BPS scientists publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals and present their findings at scientific meetings throughout the world. Learn more about what BPS does.

Austria ... Children Demography is a broad social science discipline concerned with the study of human populations, primary with respect to their size, their structure and their development. Demographers deal with the collection, presentation and analysis of data relating to the basic life-cycle events and experiences of people: birth, marriage, divorce, household and family formation, employment, ageing, migration and death. The discipline emphasises empirical investigation of population processes, including the conceptualisation and measurement of these processes and the study of their determinants and consequences. The field of demography is also concerned with the broader nature of social and economic change, and with the impact of demographics change on the natural environment.

    Population studies
Living means consuming, and consuming causes resource depletion and environmental degradation, but also creation of jobs and income. The consumption habits of people across Australia and the world differ substantially, and so do the associated social, environmental and economic impacts. At the University of Sydney we have carried out a number of population studies on environmental effects, such as
    • the ecological footprint of Canberra in 1999 (funded by the Australian Capital Territory's Chief Minister's Department),
    • the ecological footprint of Victoria in 1999 (funded by the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment),
    • the ecological footprint of Melbourne in 1999 (funded by the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority),
    • the ecological footprint of Wollongong in 1999 (funded by Wollongong Council),
    • the ecological footprint of Sydney and NSW in 1994 and 1999 (funded by the EPA NSW for the 2003 State-of-Environment Report)

The University of Michigan 's Population Studies Center (PSC) was established in 1961, originally as a unit within the Department of Sociology. The Center has had close connections to the Department of Economics since 1966. The Center has become increasingly interdisciplinary over time, drawing faculty from Anthropology Economics Geography Natural Resources ... Public Health , Public Policy, Social Work Sociology , and Statistics . The energy and intellectual curiosity of the Center's researchers, fostered by the strong support environment and leavened by their interaction with visitors and students at all levels, is a major source of Center momentum. The PSC comprises independent population researchers who pursue their own agendas with the support of the PSC staff. A large portfolio of both domestic and international research is supported by the Center. The Center is strong in several key areas of demographic research, which can be grouped into several major areas: 1) Family Formation, Fertility, and Children; 2) Health, Disability, and Mortality; 3) Human Capital, Labor and Wealth; 4)

    What is Population Studies?
Population Studies is a multidisciplinary research area at the intersection of the mathematical sciences, the health and social sciences, and public policy. Traditionally, the field has been associated with demography, which is concerned with changes in population size, distribution, and structure due to births, deaths, and migration. In recent decades, the scope of population research has greatly expanded to include such topics as fertility and family planning; morbidity and access to health care; demographic transitions; mortality; mobility, migration, and immigration; household and family composition; the life course; schooling; poverty and economic welfare; the aged; minorities; economic development; labor markets and labor force composition; social stratification; urbanization; and population growth, density, and distribution.
