What is water pollution?
Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or lives (in) it. When humans drink polluted water it often has serious effects on their health. Water pollution can also make water unsuited for the desired use. What are the major water pollutants? There are several classes of water pollutants. The first are disease-causing agents. These are bacteria, viruses, protozoa and parasitic worms that enter sewage systems and untreated waste. A second category of water pollutants is oxygen-demanding wastes; wastes that can be decomposed by oxygen-requiring bacteria. When large populations of decomposing bacteria are converting these wastes it can deplete oxygen levels in the water. This causes other organisms in the water, such as fish, to die.
A third class of water pollutants is water-soluble inorganic pollutants, such as acids, salts and toxic metals. Large quantities of these compounds will make water unfit to drink and will cause the death of aquatic life.
Another class of water pollutants are nutrients; they are water-soluble nitrates and phosphates that cause excessive growth of algae and other water plants, which deplete the water's oxygen supply. This kills fish and, when found in drinking water, can kill young children.

Eutrophication and acid rain affect water quality Norway has abundant supplies of clean freshwater. Nevertheless, many lakes and rivers are affected by pollution. Eutrophication of freshwater bodies is mainly a problem at local level in some densely-populated and intensively-farmed areas. Acid rain is still responsible for poor water quality in rivers and lakes, especially in Southern Norway, where many fish stocks have been depleted or completely lost. With regard to hazardous chemicals the accumulation of mercury in freshwater fish gives particular cause for concern. Local problems in fjords and harbours Norway’s coastal and marine waters are generally clean and healthy. However, human activities are causing problems, both directly and as a result of long-range transport of pollutants. Arctic waters are particularly vulnerable to pollutants that are carried by winds and ocean currents. Photo: Jon Fuglestad, SFT

S an Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program (SMCWPPP), formerly STOPPP (San Mateo Countywide Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program) is a program that aims to partner with the county's residents and businesses to prevent pollution of our local water bodies; such as creeks, the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. When we use water on our property or when it rains, pesticides, oil and other pollutants wash into our storm drains and into our water bodies. We have solutions to help control water pollution. These include Best Management practices for residents, businesses, and the community and Integrated Pest Management. Post Conference Report - Last updated on document.write(document.lastModified); Water Pollution 2006 Eighth International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Water Pollution
- 6 September 2006
Bologna, Italy
Organise d by:
Wessex Institute of Te chnology, UK University of Coimbra, Portugal Sponsored by WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment
OVERVIEW
The meeting provided a discussion forum for scientists and managers working in different aspects of Water Pollution. This is a topic of growing public concern due to the increase of pollutant loads discharged into natural water bodies. These problems are essentially inter-disciplinary and engineers and scientists working in the field must be familiar with a wide range of issues. The continuous exchange of information between scientists from different countries is essential. This well established water pollution conference helps to bridge the gap between different disciplines and to advance the state of the art in the field of water pollution.
OPENING ADDRESS Carlos then explained the motivation behind the forthcoming conference in Patagonia, which will deal with a wide variety of interdisciplinary problems related to the environmental and ecological problems facing our planet. The conference is to take place in a part of Patagonia associated with the Welsh colonisation of the region. The Welsh, the first pioneers in the area, brought their culture and language to a remote and beautiful part of the world. The region now faces pressure due to development and exploitation of its material resources which could result in considerable deterioration of its unique environment. The conference aims to bring this to the attention of the international community.
