Pure-Indoor-Air.com Home Infiltration Ventilation Natural Ventilation Mechanical Ventilation Controlling Indoor Pollution ... Cool Stuff Is Your Indoor Air as Clean as this? Home Ventilation Overview The Importance of Home Ventilation Proper home ventilation is very important, not only to your health, but also to prevent damage to your home. The average American spends approximately 90% of their time indoors, so indoor air pollution poses a larger health risk than outdoor pollution. Indoor air pollution levels can be two to five times (even as much as one hundred times) the levels of outdoor air pollution, even in large cities, and industrialized areas. The lack of good home ventilation can cause not only unpleasant odors, but common products and fixtures can cause irritation, health problems from mold and mildew, and even dangerous gases from combustion sources and from common items found in the average home. Proper home ventilation also prevents damage to your home by reducing moisture. Moisture damages homes by causing rot to window sills, attic eaves, and other exposed surfaces. Moisture also will peel paint, promote infestation by insects, cause mold growths, raise utility bills because of dampened insulation, and damage carpeting, electronics, furniture, and wallpaper.

    Health Effects of Air Pollution
The human health effects of poor air quality are far reaching, but principally affect the body's respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. Individual reactions to air pollutants depend on the type of pollutant a person is exposed to, the degree of exposure, the individual's health status and genetics. People who exercise outdoors, for example, on hot, smoggy days increase their exposure to pollutants in the air. The health effects caused by air pollutants may range from subtle biochemical and physiological changes to difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing and aggravation of existing respiratory and cardiac conditions. These effects can result in increased medication use, increased doctor or emergency room visits, more hospital admissions and even premature death.
    Human Respiratory System
The health of our lungs and entire respiratory system is affected by the quality of the air we breathe. In addition to oxygen, this air contains other substances such as pollutants, which can be harmful. Exposure to chemicals by inhalation can negatively affect our lungs and other organs in the body. The respiratory system is particularly sensitive to air pollutants because much of it is made up of exposed membrane. Lungs are anatomically structured to bring large quantities of air (on average, 400 million litres in a lifetime) into intimate contact with the blood system, to facilitate the delivery of oxygen.

NEW NASA/CSA MONITOR PROVIDES GLOBAL AIR POLLUTION VIEW FROM SPACE All photos courtesy: NASA/NCAR/CSA The most complete view ever assembled of the world's air pollution churning through the atmosphere, crossing continents and oceans, has been produced by NASA's Terra spacecraft. For the first time, policymakers and scientists now have a way to identify the major sources of air pollution and can closely track where the pollution goes, anywhere on Earth. The new global air pollution monitor onboard Terra is the innovative Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere, or MOPITT experiment, which was contributed to the Terra mission by the Canadian Space Agency. The instrument was developed by Canadian scientists at the University of Toronto and built by COM DEV International of Cambridge, Ontario. The data was processed by a team at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). MOPITT is making the first long-term global observations of the air pollutant carbon monoxide as Terra circles the Earth from pole to pole, 16 times every day. "With these new observations you clearly see that air pollution is much more than a local problem. It's a global issue," said John Gille, MOPITT principal investigator at NCAR in Boulder, CO. "Much of the air pollution that humans generate comes from natural sources such as large fires that travel great distances and affects areas far from the source."

Adequate breezes and mixing tonight and on Friday are expected to keep air quality in the good-to-moderate range throughout the advisory period. Fine particulate matter levels are expected to be in the good-to-moderate range this evening and on Friday. Carbon monoxide and ozone are expected to remain in the good category throughout the advisory period. Good-to-moderate visibility is forecast for Friday.

a look at U.S. air pollution laws and their amendments clean air acts of In 1955, after many state and local governments had passed legislation dealing with air pollution, the federal government decided that this problem needed to be dealt with on a national level. This was the year Congress passed the Air Pollution Control Act of 1955 , the nation's first piece of federal legislation on this issue. The language of the bill identified air pollution as a national problem and announced that research and additional steps to improve the situation needed to be taken. It was an act to make the nation more aware of this environmental hazard. Eight years later, Congress passed the nation's Clean Air Act of 1963 . This act dealt with reducing air pollution by setting emissions standards for stationary sources such as power plants and steel mills. It did not take into account mobile sources of air pollution which had become the largest source of many dangerous pollutants. Once these standards were set, the government also needed to determine deadlines for companies to comply with them. Amendments to the Clean Air Act were passed in 1965, 1966, 1967, and 1969. These amendments authorized the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) to set standards for auto emissions, expanded local air pollution control programs, established air quality control regions (AQCR), set air quality standards and compliance deadlines for stationary source emissions, and authorized research on low emissions fuels and automobiles.

Pending from Nicole What do smog, acid rain , carbon monoxide, fossil fuel exhausts, and tropospheric ozone have in common? They are all examples of air pollution. Air pollution is not new. As far back as the 13 th century, people started complaining about coal dust and soot in the air over London, England. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution in the late 1700s, we have been changing the Earth’s atmosphere and its chemistry . As industry spread across the globe, so did air pollution. Air pollution has many effects . In addition to being ugly, it can cause illness and even death. It damages buildings, crops, and wildlife. The worst air pollution happened in London when dense smog (a mixture of smoke and fog) formed in December of 1952 and lasted until March of 1953. 4,000 people died in one week. 8,000 more died within six months. Air pollution is made up of solid particles and chemicals. Natural processes impacting the atmosphere include volcanoes, biological decay, and dust storms. Plants, trees, and grass release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as methane, into the air. We are more concerned with human-made pollution since we have the ability to control it. The pollutants include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide

Yet, research indicates that the public is largely unaware of this progress and believes that air pollution continues to increase and the air quality is deteriorating. The Foundation aims to educate the public about the great strides that have been made as well as the steps individuals and organizations can take to contribute to continued progress. Our message is fact-based and derived from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data. Our tips for preventing air pollution are comprised from those advocated by t EPA and other air pollution advocacy organizations. What differentiates the Foundation is the fact that we take a positive approach to discussing air quality and air pollution. We present the situation in the U.S. from the perspective of the glass being half full, rather than half empty.
