Air pollution caused by sulfur dioxide and other volcanic gases became a frequent problem on the island in mid-1986, when the volcano's ongoing eruption, which began in 1983, changed from episodes of spectacular lava fountaining (shown here) to a nearly constant but quiet outflow of lava and gas. Left: U.S. Geological Survey scientists sampling volcanic gases from Kilauea. Best known for its spectacular lava fountains and flows, Kilauea also emits about 2,000 tons of irritating sulfur dioxide gas (SO ) gas each day during periods of sustained eruption. Deep inside the volcano, where pressure is high, the SO is dissolved in molten rock (magma). When the magma rises toward the surface, where pressure is lower, the gas bubbles out and escapes. Air pollution caused by SO Vog is created when SO and other volcanic gases combine and interact chemically in the atmosphere with oxygen, moisture, dust, and sunlight over periods of minutes to days. Vog is a visible haze consisting of gas plus a suspended mixture of tiny liquid and solid particles, called aerosol. The aerosol in vog is composed primarily of sulfuric acid and other sulfate compounds. Small amounts of several toxic metals, including selenium, mercury, arsenic, and iridium, have also been found in the volcanic air pollution coming from Kilauea. Far away from the volcano, such as along the Kona coast on the Island of Hawaii's west side, aerosol particles dominate vog, but near Kilauea SO

Google Earth Shows Air Pollution!
by Jorge Chapa Google Earth has always been a very cool way to see the world, and recently they have added some very green features including green buildings , and now the ability to visualize air pollution! Thanks to the US EPA, it is now easy to find out exactly how air pollution is affecting your neighborhoods and neighborhoods around the world. With the new Google Earth features, you will be able to find out the sources of pollution from the major point sources in the United States. These include cement facilities, manufacturing plants, refineries and electric generating units. Each of these will provide information on the carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen oxide, VOCs, particulate matter and sulfur dioxide. The data is displayed in graph form, and you can also visually compare each emitter to the next, thanks to the location of the height of each marker. The information from the EPA can be specified to be from a specific state, from an emission sector, and pollutant amount. Now if we could get this for the entire planet. + Air emission sources @ the EPA

The Mission of the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District is to Protect the Public Health while Balancing Economic and Air Quality Considerations. The air district in this region was created by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors in 1965. Three years later, Santa Cruz County joined Monterey County to form a two-county unified district. In 1969, the state designated the three counties of Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz as the North Central Coast Air Basin, a single region sharing the same air pollution problems. A year later, the federal Clean Air Act formalized the responsibility of state and local governments to manage air quality in their regions. On July 1, 1974 Monterey and Santa Cruz County Unified Air Pollution Control District merged with the San Benito County Air Pollution Control District to form the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District (hereinafter, the District). The District is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors appointed from the elected governing bodies of our member jurisdictions. Six Board members are county supervisors; five are mayors or city council members. The number of representatives on the Board from each of the member cities and counties is based on the relative population in each county. The Air Pollution Control Officer is appointed by the Board and serves as Executive Director of the District. The District Counsel is also appointed by the Board.

Study shows how ultrafine particles in air pollution may cause heart disease

Patients prone to heart disease may one day be told by physicians to avoid not only fatty foods and smoking but air pollution too. A new academic study led by UCLA researchers has revealed that the smallest particles from vehicle emissions may be the most damaging components of air pollution in triggering plaque buildup in the arteries, which can lead to heart attack and stroke. The findings appear in the Jan. 17 online edition of the journal Circulation Research
The scientists identified a way in which pollutant particles may promote hardening of the arteries — by inactivating the protective qualities of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as "good" cholesterol.
A multicampus team from UCLA, the University of Southern California, the University of California, Irvine, and Michigan State University contributed to the research, which was led by Dr. Andre Nel, UCLA's chief of nanomedicine. The study was primarily funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Tips for Weathering the Winter without Waste
  • Winterize your vehicle by checking your air filter and fluid levels, checking tires for tread wear and proper inflation, and checking the condition of your windshield wipers. Use electric snow removal products rather than gasoline-powered ones, or use snow shovels, ice crackers, and brooms to clear snow from your sidewalk, porch, or driveway. Before leaving for vacation, turn down your thermostat (or use a programmable one) so you don't use unneeded heat. Buy outdoor and indoor lights with timers so that lights don't stay on all night. Keeping rechargeable batteries rather than disposable ones stored throughout your house with your flashlights in the event of a power outage. If you have a wood-burning fireplace, save your ashes in a tin instead of throwing them away. Cold wood ashes can be mixed in your compost heap to create a valuable soil amendment that provides nutrients to your garden. How Can I Help Reduce Air Pollution?
